Quick: what do the U.S., Liberia and Myanmar have in common? They are the only nations that do not mandate the metric system as their official measurement standard. It’s not for lack of trying, at least in the U.S. Forty years ago today, the Metric Conversion Act required the federal government to endorse, if not adopt, the system. That law followed at least five other legal efforts to go metric since 1866, as well as numerous informal attempts since the time of Thomas Jefferson. Officially, not much has happened since then. Many federal agencies now use the metric system exclusively, but many others — particularly those involving transportation and construction — do not. Apathy is most often cited as the cause of

Americans’ attachment to inches and pounds. And pints, as well. Can you imagine walking into the Busted Knuckle Brewery and saying, “Yeah, Ben, why don’t ya’ll pour me up 473 milliliters of that delicious dull sickle hefenweizen?”

Let’s have another 40 years

A gift of $100,000 to the Valley County Community Foundation from former Glasgow residents Jim and Marilyn Parke will benefit charitable efforts within Valley County for years to come, Board Chair Ken Oster announced this week. “Over the years, the Parkes have given to many organizations in Glasgow and this year decided to do something different and chose the Community Foundation.” “I am not in Glasgow enough to know the needs,” Parke said. “It seemed the Community Foundation is in a better position to decipher the community’s current needs.” “The Foundation is able to accomplish what the Parkes intend for this gift,” Oster explained. “We are grateful for this wonderful gift to the endowment and its earnings will have a great impact to the community.” The Parkes’ gift is given in memory of his parents, Audrey and Arthur Parke, both lifelong residents of Glasgow. Born and raised here, his mother was active in First Lutheran Church, worked in various positions at the courthouse and served at various times as both county and city treasurer.

His father moved to Glasgow at age 7 and worked for First National Bank, which is now First Community Bank, from 1944 to 1973. Both Jim and Marilyn (Southland) graduated from Glasgow High School in 1964. An Eagle Scout, he was active at GHS, serving as student body president, governor of key club his senior year, and a Scottie football player all four years. He graduated from Concordia College in Moorehead, Minn., with majors in history, political science and economics. In 2005, he retired from a career that spanned over 37 years with General Electric. He started in finance for the industrial businesses and in 1989, he was named chief financial officer of GE Capital, GE’s financial services businesses. The couple values lessons learned while growing up in Montana and they treasure lifelong friendships that began here. Together with five classmates, they meet each year at one of their homes to catch up and reminisce. “Growing up in Glasgow, I didn’t know what kind of education I was getting. Would it stand up to the competition at college and a career?” he said. “I found that it had been great and

it served me well through the years.” As with other gifts to the Foundation, the Parke’s gift will be invested in the endowment. Since 2000, annual earnings have funded $144,679 for projects within Valley County. “With this gift, the amount of grant dollars will grow substantially each year,” Oster added. “The lives of many will be touched.” Through an annual grant application process, the Foundation has funded projects for 51 organizations. The list of this year’s grant recipients is typical: Valley View Home, the Glasgow Recreation Department, Kiwanis Swim Team, City-County Library, Glasgow School District, Prairie Ridge Village, Hinsdale FFA, Fort Peck Senior Citizens and the Fort Peck Fine Arts Council. Six of the nine projects were fully funded. The Foundation is a 501 (c) 3 non-profit organization, affiliated with the Montana Community Foundation. With the addition of the Parke’s $100,000 gift, the Foundation has assets of $696,245. It is also steward of two scholarship endowments. More information is available at www.valleycountycf.net or by calling board member Jean Carlson at 526-3245.

A zookeeper is ordering new animals. As he fills out the forms, he types “two mongeese.” That doesn’t look right, so he tries “two mongoose,” then “two mongooses.” Giving up, he types, “One mongoose, and while you’re at it, send another one.”

A lion comes across two men, one reading and the other writing. The beast pounces on and devours the reader but ignores the writer. Why? Because, as everyone knows, a writer cramps while a reader digests.

In a ruling that could bolster the Washington Redskins’ legal case to keep the registered trademarks to their name, a federal appeals court struck down part of a law Tuesday that let the government reject trademarks it deemed offensive or disparaging to others. The United States Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit in Washington made the ruling in a case involving an Asian-American dance-rock band that sought to register a trademark for its provocative name, the Slants. The court said the First Amendment “forbids government regulators to deny registration because they find the speech likely to offend others.” Writing for the majority, Kimberly A. Moore, a judge on the appeals court, said: “It is a bedrock principle underlying the First Amendment that the government may not penalize private speech merely because it disapproves of the message it conveys.” The ruling overturned a previous decision by a three-judge panel of the court that had upheld the United States Patent and Trademark Office’s rejection of the band’s application. The Redskins, who have rejected calls by Native American groups and President Obama to change the name, have made similar arguments in court as the band’s, that the government could not decide what names would offend others. The frontman for the band, Simon Shiao Tam, said in court filings that the band chose the name to undercut slurs about Asian-Americans that band members heard in childhood, not to promote them.

Hurray for the Redskins

OBITUARYSusan Frost

Susan Alice Frost (Stuart) passed away December 19, 2015 with family by her side. Susan was born on September 22, 1936 in Glasgow, Montana to the parents of Joyce and Alice Stuart. She was raised in Glasgow and graduated in 1954 from Glasgow High School. In 1956 she married Lawren Frost. With this union they had six children. Within the first three years Susan was a very busy momma with three little ones. Then the Frost clan grew three more! Ma loved to cook. She could make anything with what she had in the cupboard. Susan was famous for her tuna salad. Having six children can be hard for anyone. Back in those days were even harder, but one thing we all well remember is that Ma made sure her kids had the BEST Christmas’s. Sometimes the tree even stayed up through Valentine’s Day! She tried having the house neat and tidy all the time, but mind you, she had boys playing football in the house or throwing bowling balls down the stairs. So just imagine! Susan was Ma to more kids than just her biological

ones. She was Ma to many. Marie and Gwen Schafer held a very special place in her heart. Susan loved garage sales. As many of you know she never wanted anything to go to waste. She felt if someone could use it or it could be repurposed it should be. She loved cleaning up dolls and toys and fixing them. She loved reading books and watching movies. She had an avid book collection and video collection. Disney movies were her favorite. Susan loved to drive! She always wanted a little sports car! But as many of you may not know Susan NEVER had a license! From 1974 to 1982 Susan and the clan ran Trails West Campground. Susan worked TLC for almost 15 years. The last four years Susan lived at Valley View. She was loved by everyone up there. Her smile was contagious. She loved having her grandson Vann working up there. Susan is survived by her six children; Stuart (Hollie) Frost,

Danny (Rosa) Frost, Bill (Staci) Frost, Jacquie (Joe) Cates, J’nine Dittus, and Angelique (Donovan) Frost. Grandchildren; Josh, Lacey, Amber, Krystal, Campbell, Yolanda, Nathan, Ryan, Jesse, Hope, Shelbi, and Vann. Four great-grandchildren and one on the way. Brother; Bill Stuart. Sisters; Judy (Frank) Mazucca, Jayne (Bob) Stuart, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Susan was preceded in death by her mother, Alice and Father, Joyce and grandson, Bradley Dittus. As we will honor our mother’s wishes, we will have no funeral service at this time. We will have a celebration of life at a later date. In lieu of flowers we would like your memorial contribution to be to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital.

Merry Christmas, My Friend Twas the night before Christmas, he lived all alone, In a one bedroom house made of plaster & stone.

I had come down the chimney, with presents to give and to see just who in this home did live

As I looked all about, a strange sight I did see, no tinsel, no presents, not even a tree. No stocking by the fire, just boots filled with sand. On the wall hung pictures of a far distant land.

With medals and badges, awards of all kind, a sobering thought soon came to my mind. For this house was different, unlike any I’d seen. This was the home of a U.S. Marine.

I’d heard stories about them, I had to see more, so I walked down the hall and pushed open the door. And there he lay sleeping, silent, alone, Curled up on the floor in his one-bedroom home.

He seemed so gentle, his face so serene, Not how I pictured a U.S. Marine. Was this the hero, of whom I’d just read? Curled up in his poncho, a floor for his bed?

His head was clean-shaven, his weathered face tan. I soon understood, this was more than a man. For I realized the families that I saw that night, owed their lives to these men, who were willing to fight.

Soon around the Nation, the children would play, And grown-ups would celebrate on a bright Christmas day. They all enjoyed freedom, each month and all year, because of Marines like this one lying here.

I couldn’t help wonder how many lay alone, on a cold Christmas Eve, in a land far from home. Just the very thought brought a tear to my eye. I dropped to my knees and I started to cry.

He must have awoken, for I heard a rough voice, “Santa, don’t cry, this life is my choice I fight for freedom, I don’t ask for more. My life is my God, my country, my Corps.”

With that he rolled over, drifted off into sleep, I couldn’t control it, I continued to weep.

I watched him for hours, so silent and still. I noticed he shivered from the cold night’s chill. So I took off my jacket, the one made of red, and covered this Marine from his toes to his head. Then I put on his T-shirt of scarlet and gold, with an eagle, globe and anchor emblazoned so bold. And although it barely fit me, I began to swell with pride, and for one shining moment, I was Marine Corps deep inside.

I didn’t want to leave him so quiet in the night, this guardian of honor so willing to fight. But half asleep he rolled over, and in a voice clean and pure, said “Carry on, Santa, it’s Christmas Day, all secure.” One look at my watch and I knew he was right, Merry Christmas my friend, Semper Fi and goodnight.

Written by James M. Schmidt, who was a Lance Corporal serving as Battalion Counter Sniper at the Marine Barracks 8th & I, Washington, DC, when he wrote this poem back in 1986.

(Montana Lottery News) — Bob Combs was a dedicated Montana Lottery player for more than 20 years, playing the same games with the same numbers right up until he passed away this January. His wife, Donna, couldn’t bring herself to let Bob’s lottery dedication fade away. She has continued to play Bob’s numbers since his passing. Donna’s commitment to her husband’s passion paid off last week when she won a $200,000 Montana Cash prize on the Dec 16. She purchased her ticket at Reynold’s Market at 213 Klein St. in Glasgow. Donna’s never misses a Lottery play, but doesn’t always check her numbers to see if she won. After last week’s Montana Cash drawing, a friend at the store called Combs to see if she was a winner. Combs joked that she knew she’d won, but was so surprised when she actually did, she had her friend text the numbers to her just to make sure. Donna had retired to take care of Bob. Her son, who now lives in Nashville, said the Lottery win was “Dad’s Christmas gift” to her. Her prize winnings will help her in retirement and allow her do some traveling. She’s going to visit her son in April -- to celebrate Bob’s “Christmas gift.” The Montana Lottery was created by referendum in 1986. Since then, it has paid over $497 million in prizes and returned approximately $224 million to the State of Montana.

Hurray for Donna!
