Maths 3

Today we are going to continue practising how to multiply using the grid method and most of us will

move onto to short multiplication

The grid method

14 x 3 – Just like yesterday we have to partition the 10s and ones. In this case 14 becomes 10 and 4.

We place the smaller number on the left hand side underneath the multiplication sign.

Your grid should like this.

Multiply 3 by 10 to get 30:

Multiply 3 by 4 to get 12:

Add them together to get 42:

Page 4: Wednesday 3rd June 2020 AM · Mr Stink was not clean. He had the dirtiest clothes that you could imagine. His trousers were brown and baggy and they looked as if he had fallen over

Short multiplication

Make sure your hundreds, tens and ones are in the correct columns

You always start multiplying from the right.

You multiply the ones by the smaller number underneath:

In this case it’s 6x6 - this gives us 36. Because the answer is ten or over, 30 has to go underneath

the tens column and is written as a 3. This is similar to the vertical method for addition.

You then multiply the 10s column by the number underneath.

8 tens x 6 = 48 tens. However, we already have the 3 tens underneath that

we need to add on, which gives us 51 tens (510) so…

We place the 5 in the hundreds column and the 1 in the tens column.

Our answer is 516.

Page 5: Wednesday 3rd June 2020 AM · Mr Stink was not clean. He had the dirtiest clothes that you could imagine. His trousers were brown and baggy and they looked as if he had fallen over

Year 3 - Continue to practice the grid method and if you want a challenge move

onto short multiplication

Year 4 - Continue to rehearse short multiplication

Steps to success for grid method:

• Lay out your grid. Smaller number goes on the left hand side.

• Partition (split) the larger number into tens and ones and place these in the top row.

• Multiply the tens by the smaller number on the left and write the answer in the box

• Multiply your ones by the smaller number on the left and write the answer in the box

• Add both of your answers together to give you your final answer.

Steps to success for short multiplication

• Write your numbers down making sure each digit is in the hundred, tens or ones column

• Multiply the units digit by the smaller number

• Multiply the tens digit by the smaller number

• Multiply the hundreds digit by the smaller number

Make sure that if your answer is 10 or above the 10s digit goes under the line in the next column to

the left

If you didn’t get onto spicy yesterday try questions 1 to 10

If you did, then try questions 11 to 20

Page 7: Wednesday 3rd June 2020 AM · Mr Stink was not clean. He had the dirtiest clothes that you could imagine. His trousers were brown and baggy and they looked as if he had fallen over

Spicy

Some of these are multi-step and you might need to add and subtract as well as multiply

1. she will have enough and 2 left over 27 x 6 = 162

2. There are different ways to approach this problem. Here is one of them.

Charlie read 184 pages

Charlie’s Mum read 184 x 4 = 736 pages

Charlie’s Dad read 184 x 3 (or 736 – 184) = 552 pages

Total: 184 +736 + 552 =1472

English 3

Today we are going to be learning about pronouns.

Definition: A pronoun replaces a noun – that is a name of a

person, place, thing or feeling.

Sometimes this is a proper noun, as in the name of a specific person,

creature or place, e.g. ‘Joanna’ or ‘Mog’ (the cat) or ‘France’.

Sometimes this is a common noun such as ‘table’, ‘lion’ or ‘village’.

Types of pronoun

1. Personal pronouns

These refer to the missing name of a person, creature, place or thing.

Chloe shouted at her mother.

Becomes..

She shouted at her.

Mr Stink loves the Duchess.

Becomes…

I love you.

2. Possessive pronouns (or determiners)

These refer to the possession of someone or something by someone or something.

Annabelle is Mrs Crumb’s baby.

Becomes…

She is her baby.

Elizabeth the cat has her pride.

Both children ate their sausages slowly.

Pronoun hunt – Read the following text and highlight or write down the pronouns

Steps to success

• Read through text one sentence at a time

• After reading one sentence check for nouns e.g Mr Stink

• Then read on, can you find any pronouns that replace that noun e.g he

Mr Stink was not clean. He had the dirtiest clothes that you could imagine. His trousers

were brown and baggy and they looked as if he had fallen over a few times or perhaps slept

in quite dirty places. He had a baggy coat that was so grubby that you could not tell what

colour it was supposed to be.

Mrs Catcrumb was another tramp. She was called ‘Catcrumb’ because she had a pet cat that

walked around with her. The cat was called ‘Crumb’. Crumb was unusual in that he walked on

a lead like a dog. But he did not seem unhappy at all. Mrs Catcrumb fed him when she had

any food and the rest of the time he caught mice or even rats.

Identifying pronouns

Read this section of Mr Stink.

Underline the personal pronouns in red.

Chloe studied the picture on the CD for a moment. Superimposed in front of a drawing of a

giant snake stood four long-haired, leather-jacketed types. Chloe’s eyes fixed on the guitar

player, who looked an awful lot like her dad, only with a mass of curly black hair.

“I don’t believe it!” said Chloe. “That’s my dad!”

She hadn’t any idea her dad had ever had a perm, let alone that he had been in a rock-band!

She didn’t know which was more shocking – the idea of him not being bald, or the idea of him

playing electric guitar.

“Really?” said Mr Stink.

“I think so,” said Chloe, holding the CD closer. “It looks like him anyway.” She was still

studying it with a curious mixture of pride and embarrassment.

“Well we all have secrets, Miss Chloe. Now what shall I do if I require a pot of tea or a round

of sausage sandwiches on white bread please with HP sauce on the side?” Is there a bell I

should ring?”

Chloe looked at his shadowy face, a little surprised. She hadn’t realised that she was going to

have to feed him as well as shelter him.

“No, there’s no bell,” she said. “Erm, you see that window up there? That’s my bedroom.”

“Ah, yes?”

“Well, if you need something, why don’t you flash this old bicycle light up at it? Then I can

come down, and … erm … take your order.”

“Perfection!” exclaimed Mr Stink.

The Duchess lay sleeping on her bed, with its curled hose round her.

Now re-read this section of Mr Stink.

Underline the possessive pronouns in blue.

Today we will be learning about scaling, this links to our learning about doubling and partitioning

earlier in the week.

You are doubling - just like earlier in the week. Here is the method again:

Doubling https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=29&v=QwDiloasDw4&feature=emb_logo

But what if you want 3 or 4 times as much?

You then double your tens

and ones by multiplying

them by 2

You then add both answers

together.

numbers into tens and ones.

Today we are going to be learning about possessive apostrophes.

An apostrophe can be used for possession. A possessive apostrophe shows that something

belongs to someone or something.

Watch the clip to find out more about using apostrophes for possession. Complete the

activities and quiz on the website as well.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/zvwwxnb/articles/zx9ydxs

Read through the rules of possessive apostrophes below:

Possessive Apostrophes

Chloe’s CD apostrophe goes before the ‘s’ (only one Chloe)

The girl’s CD apostrophe goes before the ‘s’ (only one girl)

The CDs’ covers apostrophe goes after the ‘s’ (lots of CDs)

Dogs’ lives are shorter than ours. apostrophe after the ‘s’

Dogs have shorter lives than we do. NO apostrophe (plural)
