It feels entirely appropriate that a playwright whose canon contained multiple instances of gender-based deception from various characters – and whose female roles could initially be played only by men – has inspired Scrambled Prince to devise and present a rethinking of perhaps his most iconic tale - Romeo and Juliet - that features not just a number of female cast members playing traditionally male characters, but also more than one romantic relationship that – certainly in the Elizabethan era - could be considered ‘unconventional’. Such a liberating step away from Shakespearean formula is merely the best of many reasons why this production is both commendable and recommendable. Another reason: the many strong and striking performances on offer, particularly in the role of Tybalt, performed by Luci Rawson. PRINCIPAL’S REPORT Student Achievement: Adelaide Fringe FestivalI congratulate all our students, past students and staff who participated in this year’s Adelaide Fringe Festival. Three ensembles performed at the Festival and each of them was very well received by the public and critics alike.

Here is one review of “Children of an Idle Brain” By: Anthony Vawser at “Stage Whispers”:

Devised and directed by cast, with George Franklin. Adelaide Fringe. Scrambled Prince Theatre Company. Bakehouse Theatre. 2 - 7 March, 2020.

“It feels entirely appropriate that a playwright whose canon contained multiple instances of gender-based deception from various characters – and whose female roles could initially be played only by men – has inspired Scrambled Prince to devise and present a rethinking of perhaps his most iconic tale - Romeo and Juliet - that features not just a number of female cast members playing traditionally male characters, but also more than one romantic relationship that – certainly in the Elizabethan era - could be considered ‘unconventional’.

Such a liberating step away from Shakespearean formula is merely the best of many reasons why this production is both commendable and recommendable. Another reason: the many strong and striking performances on offer, particularly in the role of Tybalt, performed by Luci Rawson.

For a piece of theatre that takes just 45 minutes to play itself out, Children of an Idle Brain manages to make each one of its minutes count, texturing each scene and each encounter with drama, humour, intrigue, or any combination of the three. Direct traces of Shakespeare’s language remain to orientate us, but the minds and personalities of Scrambled Prince ensure that this new conception feels not only original, but also unpredictable and memorable.”

I want to thank all our students across the three ensembles for their passion, commitment and hard work in taking our school out into the community with such strong performances, which are considered both original and well thought through.

A big thank you also to the past students who continue to embrace us with their presence, creativity and talent and who provide the evidence for all of us that once you become a member of the Eltham High School community you remain a part of it forever.

Finally, I wish to thank all our staff and our two volunteers, Sophia Kokkolis and Michael Smith (parents) who travelled to Adelaide with our students, as well as all those who were involved in the organisation of the tour, in particular Rhonda Bonfante and Fran Mullins. Last but not least I want to thank and congratulate Tim Monigatti, teacher (and a past student of the school and of the Drama Program) for all his hard work and for stepping up to take the reins and lead the Program in the interim as we appointment our new Drama Coordinator, Ryan Patterson.

It seems from all aspects that the tour was a great success and that the students had a wonderful time and “did you very proud”.

Tour to FranceUnfortunately, due to the global epidemic of Coronavirus, the Department of Education and Training, late last week sent out a communication advising that all overseas school tours should be cancelled until further notice. The French Tour that was scheduled to leave on Sunday 22 March will not proceed.

Students are both very disappointed, at same time as being somewhat relieved.

It is our intention to offer the tour again at a future time.

Whilst the current planning for both the Space Camp Tour to the USA in September and the Music Tour to the USA in Decemberr is continuing, if the current advice remains long term, there is the potential that both of these Tours will be at risk of cancellation. However, they are months away and the situation may well change.

We will most certainly keep parents and students informed of any changes to the situation as time progresses.

CoronavirusAs the Coronavirus continues to spread within our State and around the world. I remind parents to ensure that our young people get into a routine of managing their own health and hygiene. There are some very simple behaviours that you can support your children with, which will benefit them and others around them. Let’s start with practising good hand hygiene and respiratory hygiene:

• Cover your mouth and nose when coughing and sneezing with a tissue, or cough into your elbow;

• Dispose of the tissue into a bin and then wash your hands afterwards; and

• Wash your hands regularly, after using the toilet, and before eating.

These behaviours will be encouraged at school both through a communication to all students as well as being consistently reminded by a series of posters, which will appear in a range of locations around the school.

We want to ensure that everyone in our school takes responsibility for their own health and supports others to do the same so that we can all remain healthy and well.

Can I also ask parents/guardians to ensure that if your child has or develops flu like symptoms: persistent coughing, running nose, temperature, sneezing etc. that you do not send them to school and that you seek medical advice even if it is just to confirm the dreaded common cold.

This is a measure to ensure the safety and wellbeing of your child as well as that of every other member of our school.

School Council ElectionsI congratulate Sarah Koops on her appointment to the Eltham High School Council for a two-year term. Sarah has three children in the school in Years 10, 9 and 7. We look forward to working with Sarah as we engage in the very important work of the School Council over the next two years.

All vacancies have now been filled and I look forward to the first meeting of the new School Council on Wednesday 18 March.

School Council Annual General MeetingThe AGM of the Eltham High School Council will take place on Wednesday 18 March at 7:00pm in the School Conference Room. The Annual Report will be presented at this meeting. The meeting is open to all member s of our community.

If you wish to attend can you please inform Kate Scalzo on 9430 5111 or [email protected].

Sporting Precinct ProjectA great deal of work has taken place on the south end of the Southern Carpark on Ely Street. This area has been stripped of weeds, has had fresh top soil delivered and has been planted with a number of amazing trees and plants. Mulching of the area is taking place today when this work will be completed.

These plants will eventually mask the concrete retaining wall of the carpark and even now add a sense of beauty to the space.

A job well done.

Timetabled Sport – Year 7 and 8Students in Year 7 and 8 participate in a sport session once each week. Students participate in a range of sports throughout the term. We aim to provide students with a small taste of a variety of sports, many of which are offered in the Inter-School Sports Program.

Participation is the main goal of these sessions and students are encouraged to experience a range of games. There is an expectation the students change into their PE uniforms for this session.

For any questions regarding the Sports Program, please feel free to contact us at school.

VOLLEYBALL Big 3 VolleyballA new initiative between Rowville Secondary College, Maribyrnong Secondary College and Eltham High School is being trialled this year for volleyball.

As our Eltham High School teams are improving at such a rapid rate, the level of competition from other regional schools is not sufficiently challenging. In response to this, three of the stronger volleyball schools in Victoria have decided to collaborate and design a new competition that will provide a greater level of competitiveness. Currently it is tentatively titled the Big 3 Competition. The competition involves each school hosting a round robin day of volleyball matches.

In term 1 Eltham High School will travel to Rowville and play both Rowville and Maribyrnong. In term 2 Maribyrnong will host, and in term 3 it will be Eltham’s turn. At the end of the round robin matches, the top two teams from each division will play off in a grand final. Current plans indicate this will occur at Dandenong Stadium on a Sunday evening. This will provide families with the chance to watch their children play in a high level game.

As the competition is in its infancy, at this stage select age groups have been proposed for this year. Therefore each travel round will need to be paid for as it occurs, similar to how interschool sports works. The event will be placed on Compass. Both girls and boys will compete in the following age groups.

• Year 8

• Intermediate (Year 10)

• Senior (Year 11 and 12)

Program Fees Year 8 - 12Full program fees will be added to accounts within the next two weeks. If you have not already done so, please complete the form outlining any uniform orders. Please spend 5 minutes completing the form as it will assist to ensure correct charges appear on your family account.

DRAMA Eltham High School Drama ProgramThe Eltham High School Drama Program will again run two ensembles in 2020:

Junior Drama Ensemble (Years 7 - 8) Wednesday afternoons from 3:20pm – 5:00pm

Senior Drama Ensemble (Years 9 - 12)Thursday afternoons from 3:20pm - 5:00pm

Both ensembles are fun, co-operative and educational cross age experiences and are an Eltham High School institution.

It is the Ensembles that create our school’s major productions and improvisation performances, and provide the springboard into our School’s elite Drama performance groups.

Both Ensembles are open to all students. There is no audition, and all participating students are guaranteed a part in any Ensemble production. The emphasis is on the process rather than the product; on learning and enjoyment rather than the production alone.

There is a fee of $180.00 per semester and a two week free trial. If you would like any further information please email Rhonda Bonfante at [email protected]

SCIENCE RACI Titration Competition 2020This competition is open to all students enrolled in VCE Chemistry classes. The students will compete in their school laboratories in teams of three. Team members may be from the same year level or from different year levels.

By participating in the competition, students have an opportunity to practise their science investigation skills by performing two series of acid-base titrations to determine the concentrations of supplied solutions of a strong base and hence the concentrations of supplied solutions of a weak acid.

Detailed instructions are provided and should be given to all participants. They must work under a time limit of 2 hours:

• 30 minutes to familiarise themselves with the experiment and set up the equipment; and

• 90 minutes to perform the analyses, process their results, check their calculations and report their findings on an online spreadsheet.

All students in a team will be responsible for determining the concentrations of each of three solutions of the weak acid and three solutions of the strong base that are provided to the school. They therefore must work together to agree on their measurements and calculations. Teams will be ranked on how close they get to the true concentration of each solution.

Once they have received the chemicals and online link, schools have until Friday 7 August to compete in the State Competition. The top 10 percent of teams in the State Competition will be invited to compete in the National Competition, which will take place later in the year. Prizes will be awarded to the top three teams in the State Competition and certificates of recognition will be sent to winning schools. The top-placed team in the Victorian Competition will be awarded the inaugural Jenny Sharwood OAM Shield, which has been named by RACI in recognition of Jenny’s lifetime service to chemistry education.

Schools going through to the National Competition will be required to carry out a further series of volumetric analyses, usually to determine the amount of a weakly acidic solid present in a solid mixture.

Victorian schools have been well represented in the National Competition in the past and will be in competition with schools from across Australia. The top-placed Victorian team in the National Competition will be awarded the St Bernard’s College Shield.

Key information

• There is no limit on the number of teams schools can sponsor.

• The entry fee per team is $45.00.

• The closing date for entry is Friday 27 March 2020.

Solutions will be delivered to participating schools soon after the start of Term 2, so that the competition can be carried out at a time convenient for each school. Results must be submitted online by Friday 7 August 2020.

Based on the results achieved at the State level, teams will be notified if they are selected to take part in the National Competition, and will receive the required chemicals and instructions in August. Results for the National Competition are due in late September.

Please email Ms. Anam [email protected] and Mrs. McDonald [email protected] if interested. We are looking for two teams comprising 3 students each.
