Ceremonial SplendourThailand is predominantly Buddhist in belief, and even if you are not of this religious persuasion, a matrimonial joining by auspicious amber-robed holy men is a unique and deeply spiritual blessing by which to begin the years of wedded fortitude.

The magical ritual of a traditional Thai wedding ceremony commences early in the cool morning air at a nearby temple, where invited monks hypnotically chant to give prayer and well wishes for the marriage. In respectful return, the bride and groom present food offerings to gain merit.

As the husband-to-be walks to the ceremony, he is accompanied by chattering guests and a costumed troupe of rousing Long Drum musicians proudly pounding the call that the groom is approaching.

Surrounded by guests seated on the fl oor, the bride and groom seal the marital bond as an elder ties the couple’s wrists and heads together with thread. This ancient symbolic joining puts new meaning to the expression “tying the knot”.

Pretty garlands and blessings are bestowed by family and close friends, and guests then pour holy water from a conch shell over the hands of the newly-weds. All this takes place among the fragrance of vibrant fl oral arrangements and with the melodious chorus of traditional Thai music, stringed by smiling local performers.

If a Buddhist ceremony does not suit your religious inclination, arranging a marriage to suit whatever persuasion will never be a diffi culty, as we Thais are very tolerant and always eager to please all guests to our welcoming Kingdom. Whether you desire to be joined by a Catholic priest, Muslim imam, Jewish rabbi, or a simple civil ceremony, we will ensure your marriage will be the most memorable day of your life.

Nuptial NirvanaIn the many distinct, culturally rich regions that make up Thailand, there are abundant possibilities for a unique and unforgettable wedding or honeymoon experience. The breathtaking diversity of our nation means that famously idyllic locales nestle in all comers of the country. Be enamoured by the world’s most exclusive hotels and resort hideaways, all enriched with the fmest contemporary and traditional design, not to mention the unbeatable hospitality of our attentive staff.

Dubbed “The City of Angels”, the pulsating capital of Bangkok began its regal rise quite humbly as “The Village of Plum Olives”. Nowadays luxury boutiques and gourmet eateries rub shoulders with gleaming historic palaces and temples. Perfect for wedding receptions, the city boasts several important traditionally Thai stilted teak houses, which as well as being important landmarks are also available to hire for private functions. Beyond the dynamism of the capital Bangkok, gently cruise aboard a renovated rice barge as she chugs up the Chao Phraya River, known as “The River of Kings”, mooring up on the banks of the former Siamese capital of Ayutthaya.

Circled by canals and under the watchful protection of monumental Buddha statues with their chiselled features, Ayutthaya’s centuries-old temple spires stretch to the heavens, earning it the affectionate title of “Venice of the East”. The romance of a bygone era hangs in the air as you wander together through these proud reminders of Thailand’s glorious past.

Back in time even further to Thailand’s “Golden Age”, the northern city of Sukhothai was Thailand’s fIrst capital, heralding an innovative period of architecture and religious imagery. Established in the 13th century, the atmospherically deserted ruins of former temples and palaces exude a peace and spirituality rarely captured today. Resplendently dressed by ponds and moats, as a couple you can venture through history together.

Marital MagicOnce the centre of the historic northern kingdom of Lanna, Chiang Mai and its environs provide the perfect wedding and honeymoon backdrop. In a region famous for its pleasant mountain temperature, lush greenery, and culturally distinct folk, Thailand’s northern climbs imbue the essence of romance. A true botanical discovery for all newly-weds, the Kingdom’s vast leafy landscape is an unsurpassable tropical Eden and is home to an unbelievable wealth of amazing plants, insects, animals and birds.

Imagine exchanging vows in the gentle late-afternoon breeze, standing together on a crisp white sandy beach, with coconut groves as your chapel and the gorgeous glowing red sunset sinking on the horizon. The tropical southern island of Phuket is appropriately known as the Pearl of the South, and along with Ko Samui, and

In Thailand, there is no limit to the spectacular locations and manner in which you pledge your love. Valentine’s Day in the kingdom is celebrated by hundreds of happy couples from the world over coming together for an unforgettable wedding experience. What could be more exciting than scaling a rocky cliff-face with your loved one beside you, exchanging your vows dangling some 20-metres above the sea below as the civil offi cial bravely hangs over the cliff edge to present your marriage certifi cate. This is what several adrenalin-seeking couples do at the annual Cliff Wedding at Railay Beach in Krabi province.

Equally as thrilling as ascending to heights for love, is plummeting to depths under the sea for the Trang Underwater Wedding Ceremony. Almost a decade old now, this unusual annual event takes place off Trang’s Pak Meng Beach, in a specially decorated seabed altar 10metres underwater. In 2005, around 80-scuba-diving couples received their waterproof marriage certifi cates, blowing kiss bubbles and swimming with hundreds of vibrant fi sh that came as guests.

At Phuket’s Dusit Laguna, couples plant their own “Love Tree”, which will grow and bloom for years to come just as your own matrimonial union. Also on Phuket, the Club Andarnan’s customised three-wheel “Wedding Tuk-Tuk” is a quirky Thai-styled wedding carriage to begin your marital journey. For a truly endearing wedding escort, the JW Marriott on Phuket can arrange a cute baby elephant to accompany you to the altar.

In Thailand’s North, there are some unique Valentine’s Day interpretations of the traditional Lanna nuptials, including the magnifi cent Lanna Wedding on Elephant Back. Held in the historic northern town of Lampang near Chiang Mai, couples dressed in full Lanna costume lumber atop the giant tuskers in an eye-catching pachyderm procession that leads from the town centre to the Thai Elephant Conservation Centre. Here they partake in the traditional wrist binding ceremony, before a large evening feast.

Another northern-style celebration is the prestigious Legendary Chiang Mai Wedding Ceremony. In 2005, 55-bridal couples from around the world were invited to this specially arranged mass marriage, which included a romantic horse and carriage procession through Chiang Mai’s old city. Those sharing their vows included Nepalese royalty, a Korean celebrity, and a Thai pop star.

Closer to the Thai capital, the Rose Garden Country Resort in Nakhon Pathom province is famous for its must see cultural shows that highlight unique local customs and heritage. Set among lush tropical gardens, the resort arranges the Seven Days in Paradise wedding and honeymoon package, with traditional costumes, the groom arriving on elephant back, and a beach honeymoon in Krabi.

Whichever locale you select for your enchanting wedding celebration, your evening gala banquet is sure to be unlike anything you and your guests have ever experienced. Revel in tropical opulence as you feast on a bounty of regional

favourites and Western specialities artfully presented among elaborate ice sculptures. Colourful cocktails will defi nitely fuel the festivities, as you are entertained with graceful classical Thai dancing and masked Khon drama performances. As you raise your sparkling glasses for the wedding toast, the dramatic fi nale will be a spectacular fi rework display that illuminates the evening sky, along with atmospheric traditional glowing paper lanterns fl oating off into the starry night.

Whether you tie the knot in Thailand or just step off the plane for the start of your dream honeymoon, Thailand’s superior hotels and resorts do the utmost to spoil you in luxury. You will feel like a king and queen as you are lavished with a complimentary upgrade to the romantic honeymoon suite, adorned with special fl oral decorations and full of indulgent little extras such as complimentary bubbly, honeymoon cake, fruit bowls, and chocolates. And if all that pampering doesn’t suffi ce, a few establishments also provide a free limousine to the airport, or a couples’ massage at the spa.

Palatial PassionThe ancient Thai Kingdom reaches back millennia, yet even today living evidence of vanished civilisations still makes for spectacular viewing and is a romantic journey into the past. Newly-wed couples can relive ancient glories as they wander hand-in-hand around the impressively restored national treasures that dot the country, instilling an incredible wealth of historical knowledge. Aged temple spires pierce the horizon with dusty redbrick ramparts, fringed by manicured lawns and under the sacred protection of monumental Buddha statues with chiselled serene features that make time stand still.

The present capital of Bangkok took seat in 1782 and is currently enriched with over 400 temples and several functioning palaces. Resting near the banks of the Chao Phraya River, the centrepiece Grand Palace and the Temple of the Emerald Buddha are ornately crusted in gold, porcelain and glass - captivating tributes to continuing religious devotion.

Immaculately maintained and bolstered by fascinating on-site museums, the former Thai capitals and UNESCO World Heritage Sites of Ayutthaya and Sukhothai are a must see on any visitors list. Centred round Buddhist architecture, the atmospheric and deserted ruins exude a peace and spirituality rarely captured in modem life.

Evidence of foreign intervention can be found in the numerous crumbling Khmer ruins that strew the countryside, particularly in the North East or I-san region. For romantic seclusion away from the crowds, the much less frequented sites of Prasart Mueang Singh, Phimai, and Phanom Rung Khmer Sanctuaries, is like venturing to a lost world.

Amorous AdventuresNot everyone’s idea of a honeymoon is lazing around on sandy beaches, or at the spa enjoying relaxation and the serenity of the Thai landscape. Some couples prefer to be more physically in touch with Thailand’s diverse natural scenery, and in a land that’s blessed with mountains, sweeping jungles, and river valleys, what better environment to spend a thrilling honeymoon of adventure and excitement.

Being in close proximity to nature gives you a better opportunity for close encounters with the myriad of magical creatures that inhabit our colourful land. Choose your mode of exploration - kayak., raft, mountain-bike or trekking on foot - as together you uncover hidden caves, streaming waterfalls, and become friends with remote hill-tribe folk. Those who prefer their adventure a little more extreme, rockclimbing together in Southern Thailand, particularly the cliff stacks around Krabi, is one of the country’s fastest growing and most exciting activities. Scaling a mountain is defi nitely one way to prove your love for one another. Meanwhile, spend peaceful evening together, stargazing beside the campfi re or cuddle up in a cosy forest lodge.

Dive DarlingsOne of the most awesome experiences you will ever have as newlyweds is the exhilaration of discovering a new underwater world in Thailand’s seas. With the waters around the uninhabited SimHan and Soon Islands considered among the world’s top dive sites, whether you snorkel in the calm blue waters or scuba dive to the ocean below, you will fl oat among an abundance of weird and wonderful rainbow coloured fi sh and thriving coral reefs. Swim with turtles, play with inquisitive dolphins or get up close to a giant whale shark feeding away.
