The Station

The North Anna Power Stationnow under construction by Vir-ginia Electric and Power Com-pany in Louisa County will sitat the edge of a reservoir whichwill extend into Spotsylvaniaand Orange Counties.

Work is now in progress ontwo nuclear units scheduled forcompletion in 1974 and 1975.Plans have also been announcedfor the construction of two addi-tional units, for service in 1977and 1978.

The cooling lagoons and res-ervoir will be able to accommo-date up to four million kilowattsof generating capability. The netcapability of the four units is3,744,000 kilowatts. Total cost ofthe power station and reservoiris projected in excess of one bil-lion dollars.

The initial loading of nuclearfuel for the first two units is ex-pected to cost $49 million.

A peak construction force onthe project will be more than2,000 with a present payroll of$400 thousand a week. It willtake 75 to 100 employees tooperate the station, with a pay-roll projected at about $750,000annually.

The reactors for the first twounits are being supplied by West-inghouse Electric Corporation. Thethird and fourth reactors will besupplied by Babcock and Wil-cox. Stone and Webster Engineer-ing Corporation is the architect-engineer-constructor for the firsttwo units.

The LakeEarly in 1972, construction

crews will put the finishingtouches on a dam across theNorth Anna River in Louisa Coun-ty. Slowly, over a period of manymonths, the water level will be-gin to rise higher and higheruntil a 13,000 acre lake isformed.

The new, man-made lake isbeing created primarily to pro-vide cooling water for the four-unit nuclear power station nowunder construction there. But thelake holds great potential for farmore than just that.

When Vepco's 17-mile longlake with more than 200 milesof shoreline is complete, expertsbelieve the lake can be de-veloped into a major recreationalattraction,

The Virginia Division of Parksis considering plans for the de-

velopment of a 2,000-plus-acrestate park on the north shore ofthe lake in about 1976. Currentplans call for both day-use andovernight facilities, including abeach for swimming, a boatlaunching area and a marina.

Vepco is cooperating with theVirginia Commission on OutdoorRecreation in the preparation ofa detailed development plan forrecreational use of the lake.Theodore J. Wirth and Associates,a nationally recognized recrea-tional consultant, has been re-tained to study the region andrecommend a plan for develop-ment.

A preliminary report by thefirm indicates the potential useof the lake could be in excess oftwo million visitors annually bythe year 2000. The area, accord-ing to Wirth, is capable of sup-porting not only a state park buttwo regional parks and a half-dozen public access areas. Morethan 1,500 boats could be ac-commodated on the main bodyof the lake, the firm said.

Some of the boats could behandled by the recommendedpublic boot ramps on the lake, according to the report, and theremainder by private develop-ment of the lakeshore property.

The Fishing

The reservoir at North Annahas the potential to be one ofthe finest fishing spots on theEast Coast.

A number of species are ex-pected to carry-over from theexisting river and stream systeminto the lake, including pumpkin-seed sunfish, spotted bass, giz-zard shad and several types ofcatfish.

In addition the lake can bestocked with popular gamefish:Largemouth Bass, Muskellunge,Crappie, Bream, Brown Trout,White Bass, Coontail Perch, CohoSalmon and Striped Bass.

Sportsmen can anticipate rea-sonable catches within two yearsafter the reservoir has filled. Asthe fish become established, andeffective stocking-managementprograms are worked out, thefishing should become excellent,
