2. Sister Library updatesa. Denver Public Library & Brest, France (Nancy’s Forthcoming Trip)

Nancy is giving a presentation at IFLA in France on Library Services to People with Dyslexia for the Special Populations committee. She will be traveling to Brest, France and will take some gifts from Denver Public Library, which is their sister library. DPL is also currentily having an exchange of displays and continuing education. Brest is in the process of building a new central library. Nancy will meet/talk/blog and photograph her trip.

b. Denver Public Library & Takyama Japan (Recent exhibit)We will try to incorporate a picture of the exhibit in our brochure or a PowerPoint. We should make an effort to see this exhibit on Japanese Papercutting.

c. Aurora Sister Cities Adama, Ethiopia (Nancy and Janet)Nancy and Janet met with Tahverlee Dunlop and Patti Bateman (Aurora Public Library) on July 10th. Tahverlee is the former Executive Director of Denver Sister Cities and has transferred to Aurora to rebuild their Sister City program (1988-2004). Aurora is trying to reestablish its former Sister City partnerships and has made great progress with Seongnam City, South Korea and Nigeria. Adama, Ethiopia is the first new city under the revitalization. The Mayor of Adama, and the Deputy Mayor as well Ethiopian Embassy personnel will be in Aurora from August 23 to August 29th. Some events are open to the public, some are invitation only. The delegation should be able to visit the Aurora Public Library.

d. DSCI Worldfest September 7, Civic Center Park

Denver Sister Cities International is holding their annual festival. Last year, Nancy and Janet had a booth at the event. One positive outcome was meeting the contact from Brest, France, but perhaps this could have happened in another way. More information is on the way. We had to pay $500 last year and DPL is not going, so we are not doing it this year.

e. ASCI celebration, August 23, Aurora City Building/Neighboring Parks

ASCI’s first celebration. Official Sister Cities signing at 5:00. Celebration of Aurora’s diverse cultural community. There will be booths, music and dance, and food. We will not have a booth, but could volunteer at the ASCI booth. Aurora Public Library is having a booth.

f. Colorado Sister City conference, September 12, Aurora City BuildingILCE has been invited to present on the importance/possibility of including sister library partnerships within a Sister City agreement. Nancy will be available in the morning, Janet in the afternoon. Jane and Ken Draves may help. Nancy and Janet will put together a PowerPoint and then either one could present it. Fort Collins has Poudre River Public Library District with a Sister Library relationship and may not have a Sister Cities relationship like Denver and Aurora who have both a Sister Cities and Sister Libraries relationship.

g. San Juan del Sur Biblioteca/Jane Mirandette Ken Draves and Jane presented a poster and sat in other meetings at ALA. They have been invited to present next year. They also may become board members of the Sister Libraries Roundtable.Justin raised $3,000 using IndieGogo crowdsourcing site and there was also $3000 from Jane's supporters. In Sept 18th Justin will be talking about Social Entrepreneurship.Things are going well - the Koha ILS is doing well and 1800 books were loaned in the first 6 weeks of the program, mostly Children's Spanish books. (there is no media to loan) Carol Geiger and Victor Zuniga are coming in January 2015 and they are hoping to automate a mobile project. There is also hope for an intern next summer.

h. Kenya, Above the Seas/ Tamara Kirch - Tamara was not here to give a report

i. Lesotho update: Kathy Plath- Kathy is back but was not present to give a report. We will need to touch base with her regarding the CAL program.

j. Philippines Blind and Handicapped/Talking Book Library - Nancy BoltNancy reported that personnel at the two libraries have been very busy and are trying to find time to communicate with each other. Nancy is hoping to meet Debbi MacLeod from the Talking Book Library for lunch on Sept 4th.

k. Liberia update Kathy Wood -Kathy was not here to give a report, but she was at the New Dimension of Hope fundraising event at Regis University in July. Janet was there and talked with Kathy. She and Norman are in contact. Kathy has not gone back recently.

l. Vietnam/PCCLD Amy MartinThe Pueblo City/County Library District is building the Patrick A. Lucero branch library, named after a soldier killed in the Vietnam War. International Library Cultural Exchange-Interest GroupMinutes - August 13, 2014

Amy is hopeful that Vietnam visitors may come for the opening of the Lucero Branch Library in November. In other news from the PCCLD, the director, Jon Walker, went with the local Rotary Club to Guatemala recently to help open a library.

m. Metropolitan State University of Denver Janet LeeMetropolitan State University sent a container of books to Axum University (Ethiopia) in 2010. These were primarily recently used textbooks. Denver Sister City International Axum committee has been working on sending a Waste Management Truck to Axum for over a year. MSUD has collected a ton of books, which fit nicely into the barrel of the truck. MSUD also welcomed the President of the University of Axum and Dean of the Health Care College to Denver to formally renew their memorandum of understanding. DSCI was invited to the event. Janet presented the AU representatives with U.S. Ambassador to Ethiopia David Shinn’s books, “China and Africa” (2012) and the 2nd edition of the “Historical Dictionary of Ethiopia” (2013).

3. Bulgaria trip with Emporia students, May 9-19. (Nancy, update)Emporia has programs going to other areas of the world frequently. Janet has a member of the Regis Library staff going to Serbia this October. Her class is starting in October. Students are getting a stipend for air and food. At least 10 students have to sign up to have the class work.Nancy presented the final Course Syllabus, including a budget, for the trip to Bulgaria in May 2015. Jane expressed hopes of having a trip next year to Nicaragua. She has hosted similar trips from the University of Maryland program. The class starts 3 months before the trip and airfare to Nicaragua is about $800 from Denver.Having mentors is a new idea for Emporia. They would be in touch by e-mail and on the trip with their assigned students, be willing to review their journals. Barbara Ford (University of Illinois) is interested, as well as Janet and Barb Thorne. Amy may be interested as well. There would also be someone from the Emporia staff, so we may have enough mentors.

4. CAL Program/CAL Conference: Friday October 17, 2014 a. Reception: when? Friday, at 6:00-7:00 in Nancy Bolt's room (between Interest Groups
