Welcome and thank you for your interest in Our Lady of Kāpiti School.

We are seeking an enthusiastic and visionary Principal to lead our Decile 7, Year 1-8 integrated Catholic Primary School, located in Paraparaumu on the Kāpiti Coast. Our Lady of Kāpiti School (formerly St Patricks Primary School) was opened in March 2017 by Cardinal John Dew. We are very fortunate to now have a brand new modern learning environment and a growing roll.

Our Principal needs to be a leader who has a strong commitment to our Catholic Faith and to Catholic Education, the foundation for our school as well as the ability to lead 21st century learning.

When our Catholic Special Character is the foundation for every decision made, our unique role in the Catholic Church becomes evident and we respond to the mandate given to us by the Bishops’ Conference in The Catholic Education of School-Age Children. When we integrate our curriculum around Religious Education, we facilitate a personal encounter with Jesus Christ for our students, regardless of which subject is being taught. In order to do this, planning is carried out after much prayer and discernment, especially from the Principal and Senior Management Team. Our catholicity is our point of difference and our strength. It is the reason for our school’s existence.

“Willingness and ability to participate in religious instruction appropriate to the special character of the school is a condition of appointment”

If you believe that you have the skills that we need for our next Principal, then please apply for this position.

Charter

Strategic Plan

2017 - 2020

Our Lady of Kāpiti School is a co-educational state integrated Roman Catholic primary school providing an education based on our Catholic Special Character for

children from Year 1 to Year 8.

We are the school for the parish of “Our Lady of Kāpiti” which extends from Paekakariki in the south to Pekapeka in the North.

The school was originally called St Patrick’s.Established by the Presentation Sisters in 1954.

Renamed Our Lady of Kāpiti when relocated to the new parish school site January 2017.

“The Church has in a special way the duty and the right of educating, for it has a divine mission of helping all arrive at the fullness of Christian life”. Canon 794:1

OUR VISIONTo be the school of choice for Catholics living on the Kāpiti Coast.

OUR MISSIONAchieving Excellence by living the Gospel Values in a Catholic learning

environment.

Our desire is to be a school where children can be given an excellent Catholic education and achieve excellent academic standards.

We expect our graduating students to be self-motivated, self-managing children who will take their faith, values and love for all learning into adulthood; to become productive, caring and thoughtful citizens adding value to their own and the lives of those around them in the local and wider community.

We expect all those involved in the life of our school community, especially parents, Board members and staff to actively support our vision and mission.

OUR SCHOOL“The school is a Roman Catholic school in which the whole community through the general School programme and its religious instruction and observances exercises the right to live and teach the value of Jesus Christ. These values are as expressed in the scripture and in the practices, worship and doctrine of the Roman Catholic Church, as determined from time to time by the Roman Catholic Bishop of the Archdiocese of Wellington, currently Cardinal John Dew”. (PSCIA 1975)

CARDINAL JOHN’S VISION FOR OUR CATHOLIC SCHOOLSEvery student in a Catholic school participates fully in a community of believers which is inspired by the Scriptures and nourished by the Eucharist. Teachers and all staff are Gospel witnesses who inspire, encourage and support their students to:

“Walk the way of Jesus Christ.Live the life of Jesus Christ

And tell the truth of Jesus Christ.”

In so doing students realise their full potential as children of God within a holistic education system delivered with excellence.

GOSPEL VALUESThe Fruits of the Spirit are the core values referred to in our Mission statement. These underpin everything we do.

“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.” Galatians 5:22

OUR LADY OF KĀPITI SCHOOLBy adopting the name Our Lady of Kāpiti school and retaining our traditional logo, the school has clearly identified ourselves as the parish school of Our Lady of Kāpiti. We have acquired a unique identity as a Catholic school in NZ - one that puts it at the centre of and service to Kāpiti region

A NZ Catholic school with the values, kaupapa and charism that honour the cultural and spiritual past, lives in the present and looks forward with founded hope to a fulfilling bicultural and multicultural future for the Catholic church here in Kāpiti.

The school was brought to life by the Irish missionary Presentation Sisters, pioneering parishioners and the Tangata Whenua; has been sheltered, protected and nurtured under the kākahu (cloak) of Mary the Mother of Jesus, in the shadow of the hills.

Now launched out into the wider community of Kāpiti, through the wisdom and guidance of Te Wairua Tapu (the Holy Spirit) and the intercession and support of Te Whaea Tapu (Mary Mother of God). Look to Mary to help us “Nurture our full potential” and achieve excellence by living the gospel values and helping others to have a personal encounter with Jesus.

Our logo looks back to the establishment of the school by the Presentation Sisters www.pbvm.org from Ireland. It also looks forward by reminding us to bring the light of Christ to the community we live.

The cross is an emblem of the Presentation Sisters, the shamrock a means by which St Patrick taught about the Father, Son and Holy Spirit, being three yet one, and a link with our heritage.

OUR CATHOLIC SCHOOL COMMUNITY“Walking the way of Jesus Christ.

Living the life of Jesus ChristAnd telling the truth of Jesus Christ.”

OUR FOUNDATIONAL TEACHING PEDAGOGYNano Nagle, who founded the Presentation Sisters in 1775, saw education as a vehicle of liberation for the vulnerable and the powerless and she showed compassionate love for those in any kind of need. Our school inspired by Nano Nagle strives to promote holistic faith-based education and recognises that the educational journey is different for each person.

Our school strives to ensure that the dignity of persons is respected in a happy safe environment where children can learn and grow.

“PEDAGOGY OF LOVE”Based on the gospel, this pedagogy demands that we teach by looking at the world through the eyes of our students, not our own.

This pedagogy also asks us to reach out to children “on the periphery”: those who are poor, rejected and isolated.

Nano Nagle’s (Foundress of the Presentation Sisters) call was to provide care and education to those who were poor, rejected and marginalised.

S464 FORM [Private Schools Conditional Integration Act 1975, Section 65]

APPLICATION FOR A POSITION IN AN INTEGRATED SCHOOL

RELATED TO THE SPECIAL CHARACTER OF A CATHOLIC SCHOOL (S464)

What is a S464 Position?

1.0 A S464 position is one for which “willingness and ability to participate in religious instruction appropriate to the special character of the school is a condition of appointment.” (Private Schools Conditional Integration Act, Section 65).

2.0 The Proprietor of the school has a responsibility to ensure that the school’s Special Catholic Character is maintained, and S464 positions are an integral element in this.

3.0 The Catholic Church describes these positions as a Ministry within the Church. A Ministry is an office in the Church to which a person is called by the Church community to serve that community – in this case the ministry of religious instruction. Therefore, such a person needs to be baptised and part of the Catholic faith community.

4.0 “Religious instruction” is rather more than Religious Education teaching. It implies the ability to support the Catholic religious life of the school by many specific actions, and by providing a personal example of what it means to be a Catholic. It does not necessarily mean that you will teach Religious Education, although in a primary school you would normally do so.

By law, the Board of Trustees of a primary school is legally bound to appoint only from a list of applicants acceptable to the Proprietor of the school acting in its statutory role. For secondary school positions acceptability is established by the appointments committee of the school. Once acceptability has been established, the Board of Trustees considers the information on this form together with the application in order, to assess an applicant's suitability for the position.

What is Acceptability for the Position Being Applied For?

Assessing AcceptabilityWhen assessing the acceptability of a teacher being considered for a S65 appointment with responsibility for religious instruction in a Catholic school, the following qualities are sought:

1.0 Response to a Call

Teachers with a responsibility for religious instruction respond to a call to share in the work of the Church. They should be willing to give their time and talent, not only to students, but to their own continued growth and understanding in their faith.

2.0 Witness to the GospelSuch teachers need to be committed to Jesus Christ, and to have an aptitude and ability to communicate the gospel message. They are people of prayer and reflection, and individuals who witness to a life of faith.

3.0 Commitment to the ChurchThey represent the Church and so they need to be in communion with the Church and the Bishop of their diocese. They test and validate their faith understanding and insights in the light of the gospel message as presented by the teaching authority of the Church.

4.0 Involvement in the CommunityThey are called to foster the concept of Christian community that people can experience in practice. A Christian community is nurtured especially through sharing in the Eucharist. Teachers holding tagged positions normally experience unity with the Catholic Church through frequent participation in the celebration of the Eucharist within the Catholic community. They also seek to co-operate with other parish leaders in making the parish itself a focal point of community in the Church.

5.0 Servant of the CommunityThey are committed to serving the Christian community, particularly in their parish and in the community at large. Such service means not only responding to people’s needs when asked to do so, but also taking the initiative in seeking to identify the needs of individuals and groups in the community, and then encouraging students to do the same.

6.0 Knowledge, Skills and AbilitiesThey seek to acquire the knowledge, skills and abilities to communicate the gospel message effectively. They are required to have a solid grasp of Catholic doctrine and worship, familiarity with Scripture, to have good teaching skills and a general appreciation of the curriculum requirements appropriate to the position. They also demonstrate an appreciation of the most suitable ways of communicating the teaching of Jesus Christ to others at their level of understanding and according to their life situations and their social and religious backgrounds.

7.0 Suitability for the Particular PositionThey show a level of commitment and knowledge appropriate to the particular position.

Important information about the form you will fill in

It is important to fill out this form as clearly and thoroughly as possible, even if that means repeating material included elsewhere in your application, because this form and the information it contains is used to determine acceptability. In the case of a primary school appointment this form is the only information the Proprietor has available, in order to determine acceptability.

Section D: Qualifications in Religious Education. Please include your Certification* details (if relevant), and any degrees or diplomas in Religious Education, or related subjects; the institution that granted these, and the year of graduation. Include qualifications in Catechetical Studies, Theology, Christian Family Life Education, any relevant pre-service and in-service courses you are currently undertaking or have completed. Even if the position does not include teaching Religious Education you may have details to record.

Section F: Other Qualifications and Experience. You may include any in-service courses relating to Religious Education and/or courses for personal development, such as scripture studies, which were not covered in Section D. You may also include your involvement in parish or Church groups or other organisations. Please add any other qualifications, training or experience you consider relevant to Catholic Character.

S464 referees may be asked to attest to the qualities and/or qualifications recorded in this form. At least one such referee must be your parish priest (or parish pastoral leader) or a priest recently known to you who can judge whether you fit the criteria for a teacher in this position. It is prudent to obtain agreement from your referees before nominating them.

*Certification for Teachers in Catholic Schools: Certification (formerly accreditation) is, the means by, which teachers are recognised for their professional preparation in taking faith-leadership roles in the Catholic school. Diocesan Catholic education offices can explain the course work and levels of certification available to teachers.

Our ‘New’ Pedagogy – as it relates to Religious Education at Our Lady of Kāpiti School(Article for Good News and the News. NZ Catholic Education Office September 2017)Martin Elms Principal, Maria Higgison Deputy Principal

Pedagogy, the method and practice of teaching, is always evolving. Currently the trend is towards modern or innovative learning practices, in open, multi-use teaching spaces. The truth is, that the staff at Our Lady of Kāpiti School have been implementing modern learning practices for several years, well before moving to our new school. Collaborative planning, team-teaching, inquiry learning and coaching students for independence is mandated in our school curriculum. The design brief for our beautiful new buildings was driven by our existing curriculum and pedagogy. The modern flexible learning environments we now enjoy support us to continue to develop our practice.

At the start of the design process teaching staff and school leaders were invited to contribute to the design brief. The architects wanted to know how the spaces would be used, what the priorities were and what is unique about this school, compared with any other build.

We thought long and hard about how we could ensure we were building for best practice, now and in the future. We also wanted to explore what our special character would look like translated into indoor and outdoor spaces. How could our special character be deeply embedded in the build? Not just as pretty add-ons at the end, but underpinning the whole design process.

We established our priorities, based on our values. These included: A pedagogy of love: seeing things from a child’s perspective and reaching out to those on

the fringes. Community outreach: parish connections, whānau engagement, being a welcoming

place. Encouraging healthy hearts with beautiful spaces, for relaxation and solace. Encouraging healthy minds with a library and great classroom design. Encouraging healthy bodies, with spaces and facilities that encourage physical activity,

skills development and risk-taking. A place to explore and enjoy God’s awesome creation. We firmly believe that religious education should be integrated into every subject and

brought out into the playground. As DRS Geoff Mettrick says: “God isn’t put away with the RE books!”

So what have we learnt? Catholic Character and Religious Education transcend buildings. Teacher passions, capabilities, professionalism and engagement with our Catholic faith

are what underpin successful development of Catholic Character and engagement with Religious Education

The new learning environment allows teachers flexibility and space to modify their teaching to engage children in way that meets their learning needs.

New buildings enhance and enable what we do rather than define what we do.
