AIMS

Our aim is to produce capable and independent spellers through an engaging and challenging whole school approach.

We will:Provide quality teaching of spelling patterns, rules and strategies to enable children to spell familiar words correctly and employ and range of strategies to spell difficult and unfamiliar words.

Capitalise on spelling opportunities in reading and writing to ensure a meaningful approach and secure understanding of word definitions.

Give opportunities for children to use a range of appropriate strategies to edit, proofread and correct spellings in their own work, on paper and on screen.

Be fully inclusive of the individual, providing tailored support to ensure progress.

Continue to build on phonological awareness and the Letters and Sounds objectives followed in the Early Years Foundation Stage and Key Stage 1.

PROGRESSION

Early Years Foundation Stage: •Phase 2-5 of the Letters and Sounds programme taught in daily phonics sessions, using the Jolly Phonics Programme.•High Frequency/Tricky words learnt.•Spellings focused on through daily reading and writing opportunities.

Years 1 and 2: •Consolidate spellings taught in previous years.•Continue through the Jolly Phonics/Jolly Grammar programmes to Phase 6 during daily phonics sessions.•High Frequency/Tricky words learnt.•Learn a range of subject specific vocabulary and their definitions.

Years 3 and 4: •Consolidate spellings taught in previous years, using the Jolly Phonics & Jolly Grammar programmes where necessary to teach the appropriate phase of phonics. •High or Medium Frequency/Tricky words learnt.•Learn a greater range of prefixes and suffixes.•Learn a range of subject specific vocabulary and their definitions.

INCLUSION

Where individuals are early EAL, SEN or unable to access the expected age related level for spelling, provision will be made by the class teacher to enable pupils to access the appropriate phase of Letters and Sounds or spelling level.

EXPECTATIONS

The whole school spelling scheme will be followed by all year groups and teachers are responsible for ensuring full coverage and progression. In the Autumn term teachers should revise spelling patterns from the previous year, using the supporting Spelling Progression document to track back to the appropriate point for their class.

All children from Year One onwards, will be given spellings each week to learn at home. They will be tested on these spellings each week and scores recorded to monitor progress. Parents should be informed of the day the spelling test will happen each week. When low scores are frequent and there is no sign of improvement teachers should review the words being given and adjust the phase or level that the child is working on by tracking back through the Spelling Progression Word List.

Testing maybe done by reading the spelling word or by giving the children the definition for the word, dictation of the words into sentences should be done at least once a half term from Year 1.

WEEKLY EXPECTATIONS

Reception: 3 words to learn each week that will link to the phonics focus taught in class and their home reading book level, opportunities to read and write these words should happen daily through games and practical activities.

Year 1/2: 10 words (6 words linked to the spelling pattern taught in Phonics that week, 2 words from the High Frequency/Tricky Word list, and two phonetically logical words.)

Year 3/4: 10 words (8 linked to spelling pattern taught that week, 2 High Frequency words/set end of year 3/4 word list)

Year 5/6: 15 words (10 learnt, 2 applied from learnt, 3 from end of year word list or from spelling mistakes in own writing).

The amount of spellings may be reduced to ensure children achieve success or increased to provide appropriate challenge or cover revision from previous year groups.Stour Federation Phonics and Spelling Programme, Page 3

TERMLY EXPECTATIONS

At the end of each term the words that are sent home should offer the opportunity for revision. If there are mistakes from previous tests then these words should be tested again. It is essential that children are given the opportunity to consolidate their spelling knowledge and that words are not simply learnt for the test.

•The End of Year 3/4 and 5/6 spelling word lists should be sent home to parents at the beginning of each year for these year groups.

•At the beginning of Year 2, all the first 200 high frequency words that should be learnt by the end of Key Stage 1.

THE BIG PICTURE

Whilst this document outlines the expectations for the spelling test it is the quality teaching of spelling patterns and investigational work that goes on continually within the classroom that is key to spelling success. Learning spellings by rote is rarely effective and often results in great spelling test results but poor application in writing. The best spelling sessions are investigative. If children have explored the patterns, ‘tricky bits’ and history of words, they are far more likely to make informed decisions about how to spell a word when writing it independently.

MARKING

Children are encouraged to spot their own spelling errors in their written work and make the appropriate corrections. When marking written work, the teacher will point out a selection of errors that is appropriate to the age and ability of the child by writing ‘sp’ in the margin as per the Marking Policy.

Children should be given the opportunity as part of Marking Response Time to correct their spellings independently or with a Learning Partner using dictionaries or word banks. As good practice teachers should use a child’s common spelling errors from their independent writing to inform the words that are given as the weekly High Frequency or Tricky words not following the taught spelling pattern. In upper year groups the children can find these words themselves.

HOME LEARNING

The spelling words that are given out each week should be learnt using Look, Cover, Write, Check method each week. Children should be given the opportunity to apply these spellings by writing them in the correct context in sentences from Year 1. These sentences may be given a specific focus for example; different genres of writing or a punctuation

focus (lists, questions, speech). The quality of handwriting, grammar and punctuation should be the same for this work as is expected in the classroom.
