The Atmosphere Handout Assignment

Directions: Work in groups of 2-3 to find information about the various layers of the atmosphere using the textbook pages (441-444).

Layers of the AtmosphereFirst Layer ________________________

1. The layer that is closest to the surface of the earth is the _____________________

2. It's in this layer that all __________________ phenomenon's occur (called ______________ )

3. The troposphere spans ________ km in height above the earth

4. What is the temperature at this height, the extreme "top" of the troposphere? ______

« sphere » – means round like a circle or a ball. «Tropo» is a Greek word that means "to mix" and that is happens to the air in this region!!!

The air pressure diminishes as you move upwards through the layers of the atmosphere.

In this layer of the atmosphere, air is mixed vertically and horizontally.

75% of the air on the surface of the earth is found in this layer of the atmosphere.

Layers of the AtmosphereSecond Layer _______________________1. The second layer, that rests upon the troposphere is the ______________2. The stratosphere spans about ________ Km in height3. In this region the temperature increases from ______ oC to ______ oC4. In this layer the air pressure continues to decrease and the air

becomes less dense.5. Here the temperature increases because Ultraviolet Light hits the air

molecules and heats them up (giving energy to those air molecules) it’s also the region of _____________

6. Here in this region we find molecules of (O3) (Ozone) which are made up of _________________ that protect us from the harmful rays from the sun. It's the multitude of these molecules that protect all live on our planet by absorbing ____________________.

7. The Ozone Layer in the stratosphere and it is only _______ in thickness.

In this layer of the atmosphere, air is mixed vertically and horizontally.

24% of the air on the surface of the earth is found in the stratosphere.

Together the troposphere and the stratosphere occupy 99% of the air around the earth.

Layers of the AtmosphereThird Layer ________________________

1. The ________________ is found on top of the stratosphere and underneath the _________________.

2. In this region the temperature begins to decrease again and the air

pressure simply continues to decrease.

3. The highest reaches of the mesosphere is found between ______ km and ______ km and the temperature at this point is between _____ oC and _____ oC.

4. Here ___________ are generally seen in the atmosphere at this distance, but because of friction with what little air is present they burn up in our atmosphere before reaching the base of the __________________.

5. The mesosphere is about _______ km to _______ km in thickness.

Layers of the AtmosphereFourth Layer ________________________

1. This layer got its name because of its intense _____________.

2. The thermosphere is about _______ km to _______ km in thickness.

3. Here in this layer the temperature ____________ with altitude.

4. At an altitude of 150 km the temperature attains _____ oC and at an altitude of 500 km, the temperature attains _____ oC.

5. In this region of the atmosphere we find space craft, satellites and those pretty dancing multicolored lights in the sky we call the _____________________________________.

The layer that is closest to the surface of the earth is the TroposphereIts in this layer that all meteorological phenomenon's occur (called Weather)The troposphere spans 10-11 km in height above the earthWhat is the temperature at this height, the extreme "top" of the troposphere? -57 o C « sphere » – means round like a circle or a ball. «Tropo» is a Greek word that

means "to mix" and that is happens to the air in this region!!! The air pressure diminishes as you move upwards through the layers of the

atmosphere. In this layer of the atmosphere, air is mixed vertically and horizontally. 75% of the air on the surface of the earth is found in this layer of the

atmosphere.

Second Layer Stratosphere1. The second layer, that rests upon the troposphere is the Stratosphere2. The stratosphere spans about 50 Km in height3. In this region the temperature increases from -52 oC to -3 oC4. In this layer the air pressure continues to decrease and the air becomes less

dense.5. Here the temperature increases because Ultraviolet Light hits the air

molecules and heats them up (giving energy to those air molecules) its also the region of Ozone

6. Here in this region we find molecules of (O3) (Ozone) which are made up of 3 oxygen molecules that protect us from the harmful rays from the sun. It’s the multitude of these molecules that protect all live on our planet by absorbing Ultraviolet rays.

7. The Ozone Layer in the stratosphere and it is only 1 cm in thickness. In this layer of the atmosphere, air is mixed vertically and horizontally. 24% of the air on the surface of the earth is found in the stratosphere. Together the troposphere and the stratosphere occupy 99% of the air around

the earth.

Third Layer Mesosphere

1. The Mesosphere is found on top of the stratosphere and underneath the Thermosphere.

2. In this region the temperature begins to decrease again and the air pressure simply continues to decrease.

3. The highest reaches of the mesosphere is found between 90 km and 100 km and the temperature at this point is between -90 oC and -100 oC.

4. Here Meteorites are generally seen in the atmosphere at this distance, but because of friction with what little air is present they burn up in our atmosphere before reaching the base of the Mesosphere.

5. The mesosphere is about 50 km to 90 km in thickness.

Fourth Layer Thermosphere

1. This layer got its name because of its intense Heat.

2. The thermosphere is about 100 km to 560 km in thickness.

3. Here in this layer the temperature increases with altitude.

4. At an altitude of 150 km the temperature attains 180 oC and at an altitude of 500 km, the temperature attains 600 oC.

5. In this region of the atmosphere we find space craft, satellites and those pretty dancing multicoloured lights in the sky we call the Aurora Borealis (Northern Lights)
