(Separate handout) Agricultural Fun facts: http://facts.randomhistory.com/farming-facts.html Instructions: 1. Plant, nurture, and grow a climbing bean from seed. This will test whether or not you have the most basic TECHNOLOGICAL skills required to grow food. 2. Design a slow watering system as well as a system to collect rain water. This step will test your DESIGN skills. 3. Take intermittent photos to track your progress/growth. Make sure to take a selfie at the aforementioned location to prove the authenticity of your photos. 4. Participant with the tallest bean plant by the deadline gets a HUGE class bonus and wins the Applications class challenge. A size indicator (tape measure, etc.) is required in the photo. 5. Lifetime bonus: continue growing your plant, eat many pods but let some continue growing until the pod dries out. Then collect the seeds and grow your plants from scratch all over again next year. 6. Design an 8.5” x 11” PSA (Public Service Announcement) poster intended to encourage others to grow their own food. Best Tips: These are CLIMBING beans, plant directly after threat of last frost. They need something to climb! All plants like as much sun as possible Soil/mulch/water – Google the rest, don’t be proud of your ignorance with regards to food production! Please Note: Any student that lives in an apartment/condo may participate using a balcony or must find an alternative location (friend/family member's house, school, community garden, etc.) If this cannot be achieved, then you may attempt to grow the bean plant indoors. I strongly recommend against using this option. Make sure to check with parents/guardians and ask permission before planting. Good luck and remember my ulterior motives for this assignment are to spread the love of growing your own food and the environmental benefits.
