Young People’s Workshop

I have been a volunteer for the Walking With project for around a year now, and have been inspired; challenged and supported by the amazing staff and volunteer team I work with. So when Carole was asked to deliver a workshop with young people, I jumped at the chance to join her. Then then she told me we would be working with 60 of them!!

The young people, aged 16 to 17 yrs, from schools across North Tyneside, were taking part in the National Citizenship Service Award Scheme. We were asked to plan a session informing them about our project and the people that we work with from so many different parts of the world.

Carole hoped to show them what it would be like to arrive in this country without money, often with no English, and very few possessions. These seekers of asylum often arrive by dangerous means, and have left everything behind because of persecution, torture, rape, abduction and imprisonment, - just some of the stories we hear.

The young people were articulate, informed, and eager to learn and engaged well in the different types of group work we set them. They also challenged us with their questions and answers, had lots of ideas and suggestions, and could be quite passionate at times. However they also showed a great sense of humour, so we had lots of laughter too!

As part of the experience the students were asked to plan a “project” and produced a brilliant video showing their ideas for a Christmas party for our families. So everyone at the project is really excited and can’t wait for December!

Carole and I really enjoyed the day, with these lovely teenagers, and it seemed they liked us too, as we have been asked to do it all again next year!

The project was featured on the religious breakfast programme hosted by Ingrid Hagermann.

We had a fun afternoon when they came to record our section of the programme. Our Chairman Fr. Alex, Jim, one of our volunteers and I shared out thoughts about the importance of Walking With and what we do. Two of our clients shared their stories of how they came to be here and how Walking With has helped them. The programme editors were so impressed by one client that they came back and recorded a more in depth interview where he told the story of his journey from Lebanon to England. This was broadcast on the Anna Foster show mid-week. This broadcast has been added to our Facebook page: Walking With in North Tyneside.
