Library NewsDo you like to spend time with

books and students? If this sounds fun to you, the library could use your help. We need volunteers to help with circulation, shelving books, processing new books, and working on special projects. We offer on-the-job training and the benefit of unlimited checkout of books. If you have two or more hours per week to spend with us, please call (570) 402-1000, ext. 6068, email [email protected] or [email protected] or stop in to talk to us. Thanks, from Ms. Cangialosi, Ms. Nagy and Ms. Henriksen.

Important Information The following information is provided for your child’s safety. Please read it carefully and review it with your child. Additional school rules are provided in the Student/Parent Handbook, which can be accessed online at www.pvbears.org.

THE FOLLOWING RULES HAVE BEEN ESTABLISHED TO PROTECT OUR CHILDREN. PLEASE ADHERE TO THEM FOR EVERYONE’S SAFETY.

Parent Drop-off ProcedureEnter the west entrance off Polk Township

Road and line up in front of the school at the main entrance.

Students may exit cars starting at 9:07 AM. Parents must remain in their vehicles. Thank you for your continued cooperation and support.

Students and parents/guardians are NOT permitted in the building prior to 9:07 AM unless they have a previously scheduled appointment.

If you want to walk your student(s) to the building, the lower parking lot in front of the school will be blocked off to provide a safer avenue for parents/guardians and students to walk to and from school.

Children should NEVER be dropped off and left unattended prior to 9:07 AM. Parents/Guardians who do so will be reported to the appropriate authorities.

Parent drop-off ends promptly @ 9:17 AM. After that time, parents must park in the upper lot and sign them in. Do not drop them off if no staff member is outside.

Parent Pickup ProceduresThe students are lined up

alphabetically by last name at the main entrances of our school. Parents/Guardians arrive

and go to the appropriately labeled parent pickup door where their child is.

In order to pick up your child, you will be asked to show a state issued driver’s license or photo card and also to sign your child out. Your child will then be released from the door they are assigned to based on their last name. If you need to enter the school, you will be asked to enter through the main entrance visitor door and sign into the building (identification is required).

The Pleasant Valley Elementary office is a busy place at the end of the school day, with our office staff focusing on the safety of our students as we get them ready for dismissal and other

after school activities. As noted in the Student-Parent Handbook, a few procedures must be followed to keep our

students safe. We are asking parents/guardians to make every attempt to adhere to our procedures when picking up children at the end of the school day.

Send a note to school when you are planning to pick up your child at the 3:42 PM parent pickup time.

Be on time when picking up your child, and bring photo ID.

Page 3: €¦ · Web viewSeptember 201 7 Newsletter Ms. Barbara BradleyMr. Roger PomposelloMs. Valerie Rudawski Co-PrincipalCo-PrincipalDean of Students Be sure to look for the PVE Newsletter

Keep all emergency contact information updated.

Students may not be picked up between 3:15 – 3:42 PM unless there is a medical appointment or a family emergency. An administrator’s approval may be necessary. Calling the classrooms during

this time interrupts instruction that is occurring as teachers close their lessons for the day.

Additionally, we welcome group instructors- or leaders, (scouts, 4-H, etc.), to enter the school

following our 3:42 PM parent pickup time. We are asking that parents/guardians DO

NOT come to the school after school hours to pick up any homework. Custodians are not allowed to let parents/guardians back into classrooms.

We are asking that parents/guardians please list the following on your child’s parent pickup note:

*Date:*Full name of student (Please Print):*Teacher’s Name:*Full name and phone number of

the person who will be picking up the Student (Please Print):*Your signature:

This will ensure that your child is prepared to be released to the proper

individual.

PVE Kicks Off Healthy Happy Meals at ShopRite

Pleasant Valley Elementary, ShopRite, and the local community will be partnering to provide needy students with lunches and breakfasts on “Long Weekends.” ShopRite will be providing breakfast and lunch items at cost. ShopRite will also be allowing PVE to set up tables for soliciting community members and packing bags in their store. PVE volunteers will be asking interested community members to purchase, for

a nominal fee, a packaged bag which will contain breakfast and lunch items for qualifying students. If you would like to make a donation towards this cause, please send in $3.00 marked Healthy Happy Meals. Volunteers will be packing the bags at the store on the following dates:

Saturday, September 23rd from 10:30 AM till 1:30 PM

Thursday,September 28th from 4:00 – 6:00 PM

Please help us insure that all of our students receive a healthy breakfast and lunch by supporting this very deserving project.

Change of address or phone numberIt is extremely important to notify the

school of any address or phone number changes so the Connect-Ed Automated Phone System can work efficiently. This phone system notifies parents/guardians of important messages such as school cancellations, meetings, conferences, etc. Changes may be sent in writing to your child’s teacher.

All address changes must be made through Central Registration, which is located in the Administration Building on Route #115. For more information, please call 570-402-1000, ext. 4010.

Also, please fill out the emergency form completely and accurately at the beginning of the school year. Keep the school informed if information changes during the school year. Remember students cannot be released to anyone who is not listed on the emergency form.

Medication at SchoolIf your child requires medication during

school hours, you will need to provide the school nurse with medication orders and the medication in the original container.

As per the Pleasant Valley School District Drug Awareness Policy, even non-prescription drugs are considered to be illegal unless permission to use these medications in school has been granted. Please remember that a child is not permitted to carry their own medication to and from school. The

parent must bring the medication to school and meet with the school nurse at that time.

You may access the school district policy and medication authorization for at www.pvbears.org / Board Policy No. 210.

School VisitorsIn the interest of safety for our students at

Pleasant Valley Elementary School, we are continuing to use the security system. Please read over the following rules and regulations:

Students and parents/guardians are NOT permitted in the building prior to 9:07 AM except to attend a previously scheduled appointment. Children should NEVER be dropped off and left unattended prior to 9:07 AM. Parents/Guardians who do so will be reported to the appropriate authorities. Students and parents/guardians may enter

the building between 9:07 AM and 9:17 AM by reporting to the secretary at the window to obtain a visitor badge if you are permitted to go beyond the lobby area. Proper ID must be presented to the secretary.

Any person entering the building between 9:17 AM and 3:47 PM will need to identify themselves and the purpose of their visit to the secretary at the window.

Parent pickup will begin at 3:42 PM for students at the end of the school day. The students are lined up alphabetically by last name at the main entrances of our school. Parents/Guardians arrive and go to the appropriately labeled parent pickup door where their child is.

Parents/Guardians may enter the building to pick up their children until 3:15 PM. Parents/Guardians who need to pick up their child for an appointment must do so prior to 3:15 PM or wait until parent pickup time at 3:42 PM. No children will be released from 3:15 – 3:47 PM. Students may not be picked up between 3:15 – 3:47 PM unless there is a medical appointment or a family emergency. An administrator’s approval may be necessary.

A student will be marked tardy after 9:17 AM.The system works as follows:

Visitors are required to submit a driver’s license or other government issued photo I.D. (e.g., passport, etc.) to the secretary to assure proper identification and check-

out by the visitor. The I.D. shall be retained at the secretary’s desk. Visitors who fail to submit proper I.D. will not be permitted entry into the building. Upon return of the visitor badge, the visitor(s) will have their I.D. returned. The visitor badge is to be worn at or above the waist and in clear view at all times. The visitor badge is valid only for date of issuance.

Your cooperation is our assurance of a safe building for students.

School Bus Rules & RegulationsAll students of the Pleasant Valley School

District share in the responsibility to provide a safe, efficient, and wholesome atmosphere on the school district buses. The bus is a viable extension of the school in law, in expectation, and in fact. In view of the fact that a bus is an extension of the classroom, the Board shall require children to conduct themselves on the bus in a manner consistent with established standards for classroom behavior. It is very important that all students cooperate fully with the bus drivers. RIDING THE SCHOOL BUS IS A PRIVILEGE, NOT A RIGHT. Misconduct by bus passengers will result in having their transportation privileges withdrawn. The Pleasant Valley School District reserves the right to suspend disruptive students from bus transportation. SUSPENSION FROM THE BUS IS NOT AN EXCUSE FOR BEING ABSENT FROM OR LATE TO SCHOOL, unless the infraction is of a serious nature, in which case a school attendance suspension may be assigned in addition to the bus riding suspension.

Page 5: €¦ · Web viewSeptember 201 7 Newsletter Ms. Barbara BradleyMr. Roger PomposelloMs. Valerie Rudawski Co-PrincipalCo-PrincipalDean of Students Be sure to look for the PVE Newsletter

Each year, we need to stress the following transportation regulation. First Student cannot transport students to locations other than their designated bus stops. Notes to ride on another bus will NOT be accepted by any bus driver. Pleasant Valley School offices will NOT accept notes from parents/guardians or students to ride on different buses. It is very confusing for many children to continuously switch buses. Parents/Guardians must arrange their own transportation if a student needs to be picked up or dropped off somewhere other than their regular bus stop. In addition, parents/guardians must make arrangements for transporting their children to and from after school locations and activities.

Pupil AttendanceIn accordance with compulsory school

attendance requirements as outlined in the School Law of Pennsylvania, the Pleasant Valley School District will follow the policies listed below.

School attendance is closely related to a student’s academic

progress. It is the parent’s responsibility to see that their child attends school. The

parent should not hesitate to call the school office and request assistance if there is a problem.1. Excused Absences – There are times when

students must be absent. Excused absences are illness, death in the family, quarantine, and health care appointments.

2. Excuses – For excused absences, it is the parent’s responsibility to send a written excuse to the school on the day the student returns. If a note is not received within three (3) school days, the absence will be

considered unexcused. An unexcused absence will result in the absence being considered unlawful (children 16 years old and younger). After three (3) unlawful excuses, a citation warning will be issued and attendance will be required at a school district truancy meeting. We are asking that parents/guardians please list the following on your child’s excuse note: the full legal name of the student, the teacher, the date, and the reason of the absence. This will ensure that attendance is not inadvertently credited wrong.

Unexcused Absence

The principal and attendance personnel will review the excuse to determine if the absence is excused or unexcused. All unexcused absences will be recorded as unlawful. Examples of absences which may be declared unexcused and unlawful include, but are not limited to: oversleeping, missing the bus, car trouble, traffic problems, babysitting, refusing to come to school, personal reasons, staying up late, getting home late, and/or relatives visiting.

Please note that all absences are considered unlawful until a note is received, and it is determined to be an excused absence.*Please note inclement weather is no longer an excused absence if the school is opened. Students are expected to be at school.Be sure to carefully read through the Handbook with your child to review other elementary school procedures along with additional transportation and attendance rules and regulations. The Handbook can also be accessed online at www.pvbears.org

upcoming school year. We are looking forward to serving nutritional breakfasts and lunches to our students and staff in a pleasing and safe environment.

A reminder to parents/guardians – eating breakfast and lunch is very important in the physical and mental development of your child. A child who is fed nutritious meals will be able to be more physically active. It will also feed their minds to help them strive to do their best academically.

If you would like to pay for your child’s lunch with a check, please make it payable to: PVSD Cafeteria. We prefer the student prepay on their Cafeteria account in the

morning as soon as they get off the bus or during homeroom. Prepaying in the morning will benefit the students to get through their lunch lines in a more

expeditious manner. Please use dark blue or black ink when writing checks. The bank will not process checks in different colored inks.

Free and reduced lunch applications will be sent home with your child on the first day of school. Please fill out and return them as soon as possible. Any time during the school year if your income changes, you can fill out another application. Students can ask for free and reduced lunch applications in each of their cafeterias, or you can call the Food Service Office at 570-402-1000, ext. 8451, and we will see that you get one. The lunch applications also apply to the breakfast program. If your child receives free or reduced lunch, they are entitled to the free and reduced breakfast that is offered in all of our schools.

You can also apply for free and reduced meals online using the internet. This can be done using COMPASS. COMPASS allows Pennsylvania residents to apply for social service programs, such as Food Stamps (FS), Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF), Energy Assistance, Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP), etc., online. Families can use COMPASS to apply for free or reduced price school meals only, or they can apply for other services at the same time (FS, TANF, etc.).

Since your child attends Pleasant Valley School District, which is a public school district, you can apply for free or reduced price school meals online by going to the COMPASS website at www.compass.state.pa.us, or you can continue to use the paper “Household Meal Benefit

Application” if you prefer. If you apply for free or reduced price school meals through COMPASS,

you do not need to submit a paper application. Students in Grades 1 – 3 are able to charge lunch up to three times and still receive the lunch being served that day. If they do not pay their charges by the fourth day, they will receive a cheese sandwich and a skim milk. Notices will be sent home with your child. Once charges are paid, they will then receive the regular lunch on the menu.

A reminder that monthly menus are printed in all of the school newsletters and can also be found on the P.V. Bears website, www.pvbears.org. When on the website, click on cafeteria menus under the list of shortcuts. Once you are on the menu, make sure you scroll down to find the correct menu for your child’s school.

Also, if you would like to celebrate your child’s Birthday with their classmates, PV Food Service Department will take care of everything for you. A nutritious snack and drink along with a small prize will be provided. The cost is $1.40 per child. Please see attached order form behind this newsletter.

What is DIBELS Next? All PVE students, Kindergarten through 3th

Grade, are screened three times a year utilizing the DIBELS Next Benchmark screener. DIBELS stands for Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills. DIBELS Next tests five skills that are necessary for students learning to read. Children who learn these skills become good readers. The skills are:

1.     Phonemic Awareness: Hearing and using sounds in spoken words

2.    Alphabetic Principle: Knowing the sounds of the letters and sounding out written words

3.  Accurate and Fluent Reading: Reading stories and other materials easily and quickly with few mistakes

4.  Vocabulary: Understanding and using a variety of words

5.  Comprehension: Understanding what is spoken or read

DIBELS Next is made up of seven short individual tests, called subtests. Each subtest focuses on a different skill and takes about one minute to complete. Your child may be given two to five of the DIBELS Next subtests depending on his or her grade level.

What is STAR Enterprise?            Third grade is an interesting year for our students. While they are continuing to grow as fluent readers, our students are also required to have comprehension skills necessary to succeed on PSSA and future grades. Therefore, all third grade students will be assessed using STAR. STAR is aligned with the PA Core Standards and will give you and your child's teacher information  about your child's proficiency as it relates to the PA Core Standards. Your child will be assessed three times this year and progress monitored as needed. All third grade parents and/or guardians will receive a report after each benchmark assessment.

A child’s scores on DIBELS Next and/or STAR  tells us whether the child is likely to be “on track” in his/her reading development, or whether that child may need some support in learning necessary reading skills. Your child’s teacher will use the information to better provide targeted reading instruction and reading interventions.

What can I do to help my child be a successful reader?           Reading to and/or with your child every day can have a huge impact on your child's development. In addition, support our core reading series, Journeys, at home with your child. Use Think Central (www.thinkcentral.com) to explore and become more familiar with what your child is learning at school. Review Bear Words with your child every day to help build his or her automaticity with commonly used words. Make sure your child reads every night as assigned by his or her teacher.           Our goal is that every child is on target for success, and we thank you for your efforts at home. Together, we can help your child

become a successful reader!
