Senior Infants plan of work for Tuesday 2nd – Friday 26th June 2020.

English:

Continue reading with either: ‘Stop that dog’/ practicing sight words for ‘Finn’s Dream’ or ‘Finn’s Dream’ itself/ continue with the Rainbow/Starways/Wonderland series on ‘Fallons Online’.

Edco also has some lovely readers. Log on as usual to edcolearning.ie and filter search for English. A list of English readers wil appear and scroll down to find ones suitable for Senior Infants/First Class e.g. ‘My little box’, ‘What a box’ & ‘Zeb’s storybook’. The name of the class the book is suitable for is on the book cover.

Phonics: To revise phonics, log onto ‘Folens Online’ and search for ‘Sounds in Action’ Senior Infants. Children can complete the pages online, orally or in a copy, as far as possible.

Spellings: revise spellings from previous work plan. Writing: Sentence dictation. Call the sentences on the next page, out to

the children and ask them to write them in their writing copies. Please remind the children to use their correct pencil pinch and ‘Helping Hands’. (See next page). One or two sentences a day is plenty. Afterwards check that the child has written the sentence correctly. Gently correct any mistakes.Note: -Children may not know how to spell all the words in the sentence and thats fine too. Help them sound out words if they need to. Ultimately, you are testing that they wrote the words from their spelling list correct in the sentence, which are highlighted in red.

-Children also have used this writing paper in school so they should be familiar with where the letters go on the lines.

SESE:

1. Water: Have a look at some of these videos before you begin. They

highlight the importance of bodies of water for children. ‘The water bodies’ ( The Dr.Binocs Show-Youtube).

This is very good at describing what a river, lake is etc. ‘Where does water come from’ (Ecology for kids-Youtube).

This explains the water cycle in childlike terms. http://www.primaryhomeworkhelp.co.uk/rivers.html . This

link describes what rivers are and how they are useful. https://kids.kiddle.co/River_Shannon Earth & Beautiful Ocean (Nature Ocean HD-Youtube).

Highly recommended, a beautiful visual piece about life in the ocean.

Ocean of truth (Youtube). Again, highly recommended. A whale’s tale (Hope works-Youtube). A very important

video, highlighting the need to conserve oceans. Peppa Pig: Jumping in muddy puddles song (Youtube). Then complete ‘Small World’ pg. 20

2. Water themed experiments: Complete expts: Is it waterproof? and Does it float? ‘Small

World’ pg. 21 & 50.

It’s very important that the children understand the meaning of these concepts and that they first predict what will happen in the experiment. It’s also important that they have as much ‘hands on’ experience as possible in conducting the experiment and that once the experiment is done, all answers must be recorded.

It’s not required that the child’s prediction and outcome are the same answer. Ensure the child understands this. Sometimes, they think if their prediction and outcome are not the same, they are wrong.

Page 5: €¦  · Web viewSenior Infants plan of work for Tuesday 2nd – Friday 26th June 2020. English: Continue reading with either: ‘Stop that dog’/ practicing sight words for ‘Finn’s

Use the definitions below to explain these concepts. Once you begin the experiments the children will have a better understanding when they see the experiment in action.

I also find it helps to carry out the expt for floating and sinking in a clear glass/pyrex mixing bowl. Its not essential but that way the children can clearly observe both the sink and float concepts in action.

Waterproof: not letting water through/something that keeps water out. Float: to rest on the surface of a liquid e.g. water in this case.Sink: to fall or drop to the bottom of a liquid.

3. Minibeasts: https://www.theschoolrun.com/homework-help/

minibeasts is a very good website which describes minibeasts and gives some really interesting facts about minibeasts.

Also have a look these very interesting and factual videos about minibeasts:

‘Worms are wonderful’ (SciShow kids-Youtube). ‘How a caterpillar becomes a butterfly’ ( SciShow kids-

Youtube). ‘Caterpillar shoes’ ( The old branch-Youtube). Highly

recommended. Brilliant for children. ‘Busy Bees’ (SciShow kids-Youtube). ‘Spiders by Gail Gibbons read aloud’ ( Youtube) ‘Diary of a spider’ & ‘Diary of a worm’ (Youtube). Also try out a minibeast hunt (See ‘Minibeast Spotting

Worksheet’). No need to catch minibeasts, just observe. Complete ‘Small World’ pg. 49, 48 & 11.

4. People at work: On pg. 28 of ‘Small World’ discuss the different people who

help us, how they help us, what equipment they might use, where they work etc. Then complete pg. 28 & 29.

Also see: ‘When I grow up’ by Andrew Daddo & Johnathan Bently (Youtube)

5. Favourite Memory: Here are some examples of memorable events from this

school year:

-First day of school in my new class-First time on the MUGA pitch-Our new car-park-Dress-up for Halloween-Christmas Show 2019-Christmas Jumper Day-Community Carol Service- Fr. O’ Byrne-Mussel dissection with Ross the Scientist-Tag rugby with Dermot-Gymnastics with Shane- The mouse that ran around the classroom!!-Céilí for St. Patrick’s Day-Walk or cycle to school day-Green Flag

Children may have their own favourite memories to complete ‘Small World’ pg. 60.

SEESAW: Activities will be posted daily on SEESAW covering various curricular areas.

Gaeilge:

Practice ‘Comhrá na maidine’ every day. Also extend the comhrá, by including the phrases: Is maith liom, Ní maith liom and Is fearr liom that the children practiced for Bia.

Continue with Éadaí if not already completed. Move onto ‘Ag Siopadóireacht’ (shopping) once you are satisfied

children know the vocabulary from the previous themes and can use the words in a proper sentence as Gaeilge.

Here is the foclóir and frása children need to practice for the new theme.

Frása: Cheannaigh mé x ( can –e- may) = I bought x.Mar shampla, Múinteoir: Céard a cheannaigh tú sa siopa éadaí?Dalta: Cheanaigh mé stocaí/gúna...

This is a good way for children to revise the foclóir from Bia and Éadaí if you use ‘siopa éadaí’ or ‘siopa grósaera’.

Below is some foclóir from other shops they might need:

Siopa Peataí-madra ( mod-rah) = dog /cat (cuth) = cat / hamstar (hamster) = hamster/ coinín (cun-een)= rabbit /toirtís (tur-teesh)= tortoise / iasc órga ( e-ask-ore-gah)= goldfish.

Siopa Spóirt-camán ( kah- mawn) =hurl / liathróid ( lee-row-de)= ball / geansaí (gan-zee)= jersey/ clogad (clug-add)=helmet/sliothar (sh-lith-are)= hurling ball.

Siopa Bréagáin-liathróid/bábóg (baw-bow-guh)=doll/ teidí= teddy/ cluichí ríomhaire (cli-he-ree-vo-rah)= computer games/ míreanna mearaí (me-rin-ah-mar-e)= jigsaws/ róbó (row-bow)=robot/ rothar (ruh-har)= bike/ scútar (sku-tar)=scooter.

Rann: ‘Fuair mé Teidí Béar’.

Maths:

1. Weight Use the following pictures to initiate the topic of weight. Try to get the

children to work out that the common theme in these pictures is that all those things are heavy. Do not accept big.

Explain then that you are going to do some work on weight today and weight is a measure of how heavy something is.

Page 16: €¦  · Web viewSenior Infants plan of work for Tuesday 2nd – Friday 26th June 2020. English: Continue reading with either: ‘Stop that dog’/ practicing sight words for ‘Finn’s

Show the children the various ways we can measure weight and why it’s useful e.g. measurements for cooking, some tyoes of food are sold by weight etc.

Children must complete ‘Busy at Maths’ pg. 81-83 (unless you have a scales like the one shown in the picture don’t complete pg. 83).

For this, they must also know the concept of balance, heavier and lighter than. Use the following pictures as a way of showing the children what happens on a scales when an item balances/ is heavier/lighter than another.

Heavier: the heavier side goes down, while the lighter side goes up.Balanced: both sides of the scales hold the same weight so both sides are equal/level/stay the same.

Maths:

Money-1c, 2c, 5c, 10c & 20c. Children will identify these coins and add them to a total of 10c.

Have a look at: ‘Money’ the attached pdf. This shows the cent coins up close. Although the pdf shows up to €2, only teach the children up to 20c.

Note: -Please ensure that the child understands that the name of the money used in Ireland is euro and cent, but that for now, they will only be looking at cent.

-Also, ensure they understand the ‘c’ after a number means cent and if they are asked to fill an amount in their workbook, they must also fill in ‘c’ for cent to show its money they are dealing with.

Page 19: €¦  · Web viewSenior Infants plan of work for Tuesday 2nd – Friday 26th June 2020. English: Continue reading with either: ‘Stop that dog’/ practicing sight words for ‘Finn’s

- Where children are asked to colour coins, please use the actual real-life colour of the coins, so 1c coins should be brown, not multi-coloured.

-Also, explain to the children that some amounts have no particular coin e.g. there is no such thing as a 4c coin, but we can make 4c by adding 2c+2c etc. If you would like to practice this more with your child, please see the ‘Money Combinations’ pdf for more details.

-Finally, when adding money, please ensure that children add the number on the coin and not just count the actual number of coins in a set. E.g. if there is a 5c and 1c in a set, ensure the child understands that makes 6c. Sometimes, they think the answer is 2c because they will only see two coins.

-Children can use the number line below to help them add money.

Just make sure to call the answer ‘cent’.

Complete ‘Busy at Maths’ pg. 104-109, 122-124 & also ‘Busy at Maths-Home-School Links: pg. 36-37 & 39-40.

To further help with counting money, please see the pdf ‘Money Matching’. Children must count the number of cent on a card and

match it with the corresponding amount.

My cent number line
