Suggested Learning Programme for Week 2nd- 5th

June Hi everybody,Hope you had a lovely bank holiday and made the most of the fabulous weather Below is a list of suggested work for your children to complete. Please do not feel obliged to complete everything. If your child has completed the books and you feel they would benefit from additional work, please do not hesitate to contact me and I can forward on supplementary worksheets for them to do. Have a good week. If you wish to send of 3/4 photos of any completed work that would be great.Mrs Sweeney

Reading:This week we continue to work on our words from our Splash reader. You can begin reading Splash if you have not already done so and continue to work through 1-2 pages per day. If you have completed the Splash book there are supplementary

readers on the folensonline website. They are called ‘Little Zack’ and ‘Finn Jumps in’. Below are the log in details

How to log into Folensonline.ieNB: You will need to be logged in to FolensOnline to launch each resource 1. Go to www.folensonline.ie and click ‘Register’ 2. Select ‘Teacher’ 3. Fill in a username, email address and password 4. For ‘Roll Number’, use the code Prim20 5. Click ‘Register’. You will then be sent an email (check your 'Promotions' folder if using Gmail) to activate your account.

Reading Zone Activity Book: Complete the following page if you have not already done so.Page 26Page 27Page 28

Phonics: Continue to revise all sounds.Play I spy with your child and ask them to find items in their environment beginning with w, l, i etc. Page: 45-Joly Phonics Workbook: Read the words and join each word to the correct picture. Colour the pictures. At the bottom of the page, read the tricky words

Page 2:   · Web viewOnce they recognise the word you (the parent) can write the word on a piece of paper. Then encourage your child to Look at the word, Say the word and practise writing

and find them in the wordsearch. (if your child has not completed a wordsearch before you may need to explain that the words can be found in a horizontal and vertical manner) Page: 46-Joly Phonics Workbook: Read each sentence carefully and draw a picture to illustrate it.

Writing:

The picture above contains word boxes 6. Encourage your child to sound out, blend and write five words each day. The children had completed the first five words prior to schools closing. You can begin with the word ‘as’. If your child has difficulty in sounding and blending the word, you can help them by blending the sounds together quickly for them. Once they recognise the word you (the parent) can write the word on a piece of paper. Then encourage your child to Look at the word, Say the word and practise writing the word beside the one that you have already written. You can also encourage your child to put the word into a sentence orally. Also if you feel your child is able to write these words with little difficulty, encourage them to put the word into a sentences orally- you write the sentence for the child and they can copy it underneath. Be sure to make them aware of what a finger space is between each word and the full stop at the end of the sentence. Again if you feel this is too much for your child, then that is okay too. Work at a pace that suits your child.

I have downloaded more of the Bua na Cainte clips onto google drive and you can access them through the following links. Apologies however, as I have had to use my own voice over some of the characters voices as the sound was not good enough to hear the characters themselves speak. This week we are covering Ag Siopadóireacht:

Ag Siopadóireacht (Shopping)

Cad atá sa siopa? What is in the shop?Tá _____ sa siopa. (ceapaire, arán, banana, oráiste, líreacán, bainne...)

I would like ____. (sandwich, bread, banana, orange, lollipop, sweets...)

Cén siopa é sin? What shop is that?Sin siopa ____. (milseán...) That’s the ____ shop.

Maths: This week we are still working on combining numbers but we are also going to work on Capacity.

Capacity: Language associated with weight: light heavy, lighter, heavier, weighs more, weighs lessHave a discussion about capacity. Ascertain what they know about capacity. Show them a tub/glass/jug of something full i.e what can we say about the butter? Is it full/empty/nearly full/nearly empty? Can it hold more? Examine two different containers i.e jug and a jar- what can we say about the two containers? Can they hold the same amount of water? Look at two same containers i.e tubs/glasses/jars- one empty and one full. What can we say about the two containers? They hold the same amount of liquid. What would happen if I poured liquid into the empty jar?Become familiar with the vocabulary: empty, full, nearly empty, nearly full, full to the top/brim, amount, holds more, holds less.Allow children opportunities to empty and fill containers of various sizes with water, rice etc using funnels, bottles, buckets, egg cups, anything available to you. Practise pouring from one container to another, refilling containers, etcPage 82: Discuss all the familiar objects in the picture and identify by placing a circle around them, all the objects that are empty. Record the number of full and empty objects at the bottom of the page.Page 30: (At Home Book) The children reinforce their knowledge of the meaning of words such as full, empty, holds more, holds less and full to the top.Page 29: (At Home Book) Revision of Weight. Find the objects that weigh more. Weigh each pair of objects with your hands and tick the heavier object.Page 83: The concept of zero has already been previously mentioned to children but can still pose a difficulty to some. We only introduce zero when children have a good understanding of the numbers 1-5. Compare zero to the number 1,2,3,4,5 as it helps the children understand the empty set zero. They look at a set of 3 nd see three objects whereas they look at a set of zero and see no objects. Draw the children’s attention to the shape of the number zero on page 83. Ask them about the empty set.

Try some oral problems;

There were five books on a shelf. The teacher gave a book to five children. How many were left?

Page 5:   · Web viewOnce they recognise the word you (the parent) can write the word on a piece of paper. Then encourage your child to Look at the word, Say the word and practise writing

Four cars in a garage. Three were sold how many were left? A shop has three scooters. Three were sold how many were left? Sean had 4 crayons. He gave two to his friend. How many has he left? A dog has five puppies. Dad found homes for 3. How many are left? Four goldfish are in the fish tank. Sam bought two. How many are left? A cat has four kittens. Mum found homes for all of them. How many are left? Mum baked 5 lovely buns. She gave one to David and his friend. How many

are left?

Combining: Pages 84- 87These pages are a revision of combining, something that the children have already previously worked on in page 78 and 79. Encourage the children to say the whole sum out loud. i.e 1 and 1 make 2. Use materials such as counters, spoons, etc so that the children can visualise the sets. Complete the pages 84-87 working from left to right on each sum.

SESE- History, Geography, Science

Page 65: Look at the photos on page 65. Get the children to describe what they see in each one. Discuss the colours worn by the people in the photos. Probe the children as to why they are wearing those clothes. Ask the children where they think the people live and why. Discuss what knitting is and what implements are needed to knit something. Ask the children what a knitted item looks like and feels like?

Page 64: (History) Read Ann’s blog at the top of the page. Ask the children to identify some items that the cardigan could be made from. Get the children to sequence the steps for making a cardigan in the correct order.Page 65: (Geography) Discuss how the weather affects the clothes we wear. Ask the children to give examples of the kinds of clothes people wear at different times of the year and in different weathers. Look at the ‘Dressing for the Cold’ activity on page 65. Ask the children what clothes they would give this person to wear. Ask them what clothes they would add/change if the weather got warmer or colder.Page 66: (Science) Go on a walk around the house and identify different textures for example a woollen scarf a velvet scrunchie, a silk scarf a cotton sock a rubber swim hat, etc. Ask the children to describe how they feel.Teach the words to describe various textures to the children i.e fluffy, woolly, soft, sny, velvety, fury.Look the materials on page 68 and describe the differences between them in terms of colour, texture, shape. When do you use these items? What kinds of materials are used to make shoes/hats and can you use other materials? Discuss the colours of the materials and see can the children identify other red/yellow/black items in the room.Look at the clothes hangers and ask the children if they can identify what the hangers are made from? Read the words opposite the hangers and match them to the correct pictures.
