Welcome to Global History Mr. Jankowski 586.723.3214 [email protected]

What is this class about? In this class we will be taking a tour of World History, broken up into regional studies, and examining that region’s historical relevance to modern day events. I am pleased to be your guide on this journey.

The importance of social studies is unparalleled in the world of academia, for it is only here that you will learn to question the world around you.

First Semester:We begin by reviewing major world religions followed by classical civilizations and empires, then proceed to the European Renaissance and continue through the end of World War I (essentially the 1300s to 1918).

Second Semester: We pick up after mid-term exams with the settlement of WWI and the buildup to WWII and then continue on until we reach current events, such as the War on Terror, ISIS, North Korea, major global problems, etc. (essentially 1918 until present).

How this Material will be taught:I will use a variety of teaching methods including: Lecture, discussion, guided reading and analysis,

projects, web crawls and research, chart and graph studies, map studies, cooperative learning, etc. We will also focus on a variety of skills: note taking, essay construction, critical thinking, analysis and interpretation of documents, etc.

How you will be assessed:You will be continuously assessed throughout this class by participating in the indicated teaching methods

above. You will be formally assessed/graded by completing and turning in assignments, projects, essays, and taking exams. Grading Scale:

100%-92% = A91-90=A-89-88=B+87-82=B

81-80=B-79-78=C+77-72=C71-70=C-

69-68=D+67-62=D61-60=D-59 and Below = F

What determines your report card grade? My grading system is in line with the district

You will receive a letter grade for each quarter and an exam grade at the end of each semester. The three grades will be compiled to figure your semester grade.

For Example: Q1 + Q2 +Exam = 1 st Semester Grade Q3 +Q4+Exam = 2 nd Semester Grade Each Quarter represents 40% of your semester grade and each exam represents 20% → 40+40+20 = 100%For Example: In Quarter 1 you earned 75%, Q2 = 60% and on the exam you got an 80%75x40%=30, 60x40%=24, 80x20%=16 → 30+24+16=70% = C-Quarters are independent of one another. You get a fresh start each quarter.

Page 2: jankowskiglobal.weebly.com€¦  · Web viewnot everything you do . in life . will be rewarded with something tangible. Your goal in this class (and all classes) should be the attainment

NOTE: You must pass 2/3 to be eligible for credit, however, passing two does not guarantee credit – for example, if a student passes Q1 and Q2 with 60% and then gets a 50% on the final exam, mathematically that would work out to = 60x40%-.24 + 60x40%=.24 + 50x20%=.10 =.24+.24+.10=58% = F

Grading methods: All assignments have a point value. Often for homework and class assignments I will use a Check Plus (√+), Check (√) or Check Minus (√-) to indicate what value you received. √+ = 100%√ = 80%

√- = 60%0 = didn’t complete assignment/No credit

I will be using a weighted grading system as follows:50% of grade =Tests and Quizzes 40% of grade = Learning Opportunities (assignments, projects, readings, etc…)10% of grade = Classroom Participation (raising hands, participating respectfully in discussions, putting forth effort in small group discussion or activities, etc.) The amount of points needed for an A in participation has a base number of 25 per quarter, but may be adjusted in either direction depending on circumstances. Points are counted per interactions, so be ready to raise those hands every day!

Test and Assignment Grading:In an effort to expedite the grading process, provide feedback in a timely manner, as well as enhance learning through immediate review, a majority of grading, including tests and quizzes will be done together as a class, or will be done by other students in different hours. I may even allow students to self-correct with some assignments and quizzes.

Students will be assigned a number and letter in the beginning of the year for use when grading will be done by someone other than themselves to ensure privacy. It is my belief that correcting either their own work or another student’s provides additional opportunities for learning, as well as eliminates anxiety that can afflict some students.

J-Bills:For the purposes of classroom order and efficiency, as well as responsibilities and incentives, we will be using J-Bills for leaving the room and submitting late work. At the end of the semester if you still have J-bills, which indicates a level of responsibility, you will be able to return them to me for a small amount of extra credit.

Each student will be given 10 J-Bills each semester – 5 for leaving the room, and 5 for submission of late assignments. Late assignments are not accepted without an attached J-Bill.

Assignment Collection: All assignments are due the next day unless specifically stated otherwise. Not all assignments will be collected for a grade, but as all are relevant to the content being taught they are to be finished and ready to be handed in; you need to get used to the idea that not everything you do in life will be rewarded with something tangible. Your goal in this class (and all classes) should be the attainment of knowledge that will help you successfully navigate your world. Learning is not about getting points, grades or credit –it is about acquiring useful information and experiencing personal growth.

You will turn in your assignments to the color coded trays in the back of the room. Each hour has its own color. Under the

Page 3: jankowskiglobal.weebly.com€¦  · Web viewnot everything you do . in life . will be rewarded with something tangible. Your goal in this class (and all classes) should be the attainment

color per hour is a RED TRAY for late/absent work . It is imperative that you do not mix these trays up as it greatly increases the chance that your work will not be graded.

DO NOT turn in assignments until instructed to do so.

Make up work:If you are absent it is your responsibility to find out what you missed. I would like you to do this

whenever possible without involving me. Once you have the assignment that you’re missing, then you have the same amount of time that you were out to get the missing work to me. There are trays for extras and you should have all assignments for the week copied down on your agenda, so you should be able to determine on your own what you missed. Ask other students for assistance when possible, and check to make sure you didn’t miss something that was collected. Please staple an Absent Pass to make-up assignments when turning them in

Late work:You must have all work in the day it is due. I will accept work late with the

understanding that it must have a J-Bill stapled to it, and that you will receive a maximum of half credit (1/2 or 50%). NOTE: I reserve the right to claim on any given assignment that late work will not be accepted even with a J-Bill, especially on assignments with extended due dates.

Hall passes:BATHROOM – Do not ask me when you enter the room if you can go – most likely if you hurry you will

make it. Never ask me during the middle of a lesson or lecture unless it is an emergency, i.e. you are going to be sick in some way. Keep your requests reasonable and you will be allowed to go, provided that you pay with a J-Bill. NOTE: I reserve the right to deny a bathroom request even if you are submitting a J-Bill. (See more on J-bills below)

LOCKER - You may not go to your locker for any reason other than to get something immediately pertinent for this class, i.e. your book, homework or folder. A J-Bill will be collected if you need to go to your locker. Please use common sense when determining if what you need from your locker is actually necessary.

Absences and tardiness:Please see the student hand book for a full explanation. I will mark you tardy, so be on time! After your 4 th

and 8 th tardy you will receive a detention, after your 11th you will lose credit in the class, so be on time! Ten (10) absences are allowed in a semester.

To reinforce good organization or help you learn it, which will allow you to avoid losing assignments, promote good study habits, and ultimately result in more learning, I am mandating that all students have a GREEN 3-ring binder for this class. This must be at least 2 inches, with no less than 5 tabs or dividers that are either color coded or can be written on. Please do not get pocket folders to insert into this binder as you will be hole punching your work and placing it in your binder. I do not want your work placed in pocket folders in stacks. The point will be to allow you to quickly access notes, assignments, study guides, readings, etc. at the flip of a page. You or your parent can contact me at the above e-mail address or call me at 586-723-3214 if you have any questions.

Binder Set-Up Guide – Items will go in the front of teach tab

For example: when you first open your binder you will see your agenda – after the last agenda page you will reach your tabbed divider that is labeled agenda – when you turn that page you will come to your focus questions, etc. etc. the back of your binder will serve as a miscellaneous handout section.

1. Weekly Agenda (unless you have a spiral agenda)

2. Focus Questions and activities

3. Class notes4. Assignments5. Assessments (tests/quizzes)

You should have a stack of loose leaf paper in there at all times

Materials and preparedness:Please be seated when the bell rings and get focused. On Mondays you will write down the week’s agenda – this is mandatory, and no you may not just take a picture. On an almost daily basis you will either answer a focus question or be engaged in some other form of starter otherwise known as bell work.

Please come to class with everything you need every day.

What you need for this class:

Green 2-inch, 3 Ring Binder Pens RED PENS Pencils Colored Pencils Black Felt-Tipped Pen Highlighters (at least 2 different colors) Loose Leaf Paper Flash Drive or Office365 account (school provided)

Electronic Devices:On a day-to-day basis I respectfully ask that you do not have your cellular device on your desk or in use

throughout the hour. If you do not have a pocket, bag, or purse then please leave it in your locker. There may be times when I will allow its use as a learning tool, but this will be for specific reasons and only when instructed. Please do not put me in a position to have to confiscate your device – please be mature and respectful and all will be good.
