CLASS DESCRIPTIONModern II (Intermediate Dance) uses a mostly modern dance-based approach and expands on the curriculum learned in Beginning Dance. Modern II emphasizes students' acquisition of intermediate movement skills and refined motor control through the study of various modern dance techniques. Through dance ensemble work, students continue to explore improvisation, dance elements, and composition as both a performer and a choreographer. Students present the skills they have learned to selected audiences and learn basic technical/theatrical skills for dance production. Students extend their understanding of dance as an art form through a consideration of aesthetic and philosophical perspectives as well as refining their composition skills. All levels of dance at Heritage will, but are not limited to:

1) Using choreographic principles, structures, and processes to create dances that communicate ideas, experiences, feelings, and images.2) Understanding how to use performance values (kinesthetic awareness, concentration, focus, and etiquette) to enhance dance performance.3) Understanding how to use movement skills in dance. 4) Using a variety of thinking skills to analyze and evaluate dance. 5) Understanding cultural, historical, and interdisciplinary connections with dance.

BEHAVIOR & FOCUS IN CLASSExpectations for the HHS Dance Program are HIGH and more is expected of you than just merely bringing a body to class. For dance, the intellectual and emotional being, as well as the physical, must be present and aware at all times. Studying dance requires full attention during class and alert observation is crucial for learning. The ability to imitate and create movement phrases is a key component in this class.
