Introduction

Maine Parent Federation, Inc. (MPF) is a statewide organization which provides information, advocacy, education, and training to benefit families of children and adults with disabilities and special health care needs. In existence since 1984, MPF central office is located in Farmingdale, Maine, but assistance is available statewide.

All of our services are free to families, and there are no qualifying eligibility factors in order to access our services. We provide:

Individualized information & referral services Parent to Parent Support via our Family Support Navigator Program Workshops, trainings, & informational displays throughout the state Public policy monitoring & action alerts Lending library Quarterly newsletter Social media updates (Twitter, You Tube, Facebook, & Instagram)

The workshops outlined in this booklet are made possible through a variety of state and federal funding sources including:

General Workshop Information

Workshop SchedulePlease contact the MPF office or visit our social media pages to check for workshops,

conferences, and special events that are scheduled in your area.

Scheduling a WorkshopIf you are interested in scheduling a workshop, please contact us at 800-870-7746

(statewide), 207-588-1933, or email [email protected] . Due to the many requests we receive for our workshops, we respectfully request that you give us at least 30 days’ notice to schedule. We will make every attempt to reasonably accommodate all requests. Please note: Registrations of less than 5 may require cancellation or rescheduling of the workshop.

Workshop LengthAll workshops are 1 ½ - 2 hours in length; however, we are happy to adjust the length

based on the needs of the group.

Workshop FeesThere is no cost for parents or parent groups. There is a $75 fee for agencies, providers,

or professional groups who request workshops, unless otherwise arranged.

DonationsMPF is a statewide non-profit agency which serves families with children and the

professionals who support them, by:• Providing education • Support• Advocacy• Training

MPF is a 501 (c) 3, and donations are tax-deductible. MPF welcomes all levels of donations.

Office HoursMPF central office is open Monday through Friday, 8:30am to 4:30pm. Walk-ins are

Self-Advocacy: Finding Your Voice

This workshop for youth with disabilities of transition age explores the concept of Self-Advocacy. Many youth already self-advocate

on their own, but might not even be aware they are doing so. This workshop provides youth with skills to help them better voice their opinions to get their needs met. Youth are encouraged to

share their dreams and goals for the future as we discuss the next steps in making it possible. The targeted audience is youth of

transition age (grades 7 – 12).

Education is Special: A Guide to Special Education in Maine

Special Education is a complex and confusing system to navigate. Join us for a workshop

which will walk you through Special Education rules and regulations in an interactive and parent-friendly manner. We will discuss the differences between 504 Plans and IEPs as well as explore appropriate steps in conflict resolution. This workshop is designed for parents, foster parents, or anyone who works with a child between the ages of 2 and 20 years old.

SMART Goals for Your Individualized Education Program

Goals are the very core of the IEP. Do you stuggle to understand your child’s IEP goals? Are you able to tell if your child is making progress? This workshop will help you gain insight as we discuss and practice writing Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Results

oriented, and Time specific (S.M.A.R.T.) IEP goals.

Bullying

During this interactive workshop, we will take a close look at bullying and provide tips for

prevention. We will also discuss what happens when we encounter bullying and identify some of the outcomes from

bullying. Parents, educators, and people working with children are welcome to come to the adult session. There is also a youth

session which is appropriate for students in middle and high school.

Transition to Kindergarten

New school, new faces, new smells, new friends! This workshop explores the impact of transitioning from preschool to kindergarten. Parents will learn how to prepare their child and how to continue to be an engaged member of their child’s education team.

Transition Planning: Looking Beyond the High School Years

Your kids are growing up! This workshop educates parents on what to expect as your child becomes an adult. When your child

reaches the age of majority (18) many changes occur and navigating the switch from children’s services to adult services

can often be difficult. We will discuss how to develop a successful transition plan and what transition services are available in Maine.

Supported Decision Making

The guardianship probate was recently changed in Maine as of September 1, 2019. This change requires a “least restrictive alternative” before a judge grants someone guardianship. Supported Decision Making is one of these models that allows a person to retain their rights and make their own decisions with the help of a team made from people they trust.

Learn about the Supported Decision-Making Model as well as additional least restrictive options to full guardianship.

Maine Parent Federation Overview

MPF Overview is a great way to explore what our organization is doing to support families. Our

knowledgeable staff offer resources to you, your family, and professionals throughout Maine. Contact us to find out more about MPF and the services we

provide. (This workshop is presented at no cost to all groups.)

* Why Can’t Johnny B. Goode at Home? All children misbehave, but for some children that behavior is more frequent, intense, and challenging. During this workshop, participants will gain an understanding about some of the causes of these challenging behaviors. We will discuss approaches designed to work for the whole family and review strategies which can influence a child’s behavior in positive ways.

*Can You Hear Me Now? Communication, Advocacy, & Conflict Resolution We will take a closer look at our advocacy skills and explore the various aspects of communication, conflict, and advocacy styles during this training. We will discuss effective communication; learn strategies to help us achieve successful communication outcomes; and explore other methods to resolve conflict.

(*) denotes workshops available by special request*Transitioning from Children’s Health Care System to the Adult SystemTransitioning from the children’s health care system to the adult system is often an unexpected challenge. In this workshop, we will provide tips about planning for the transition, including which information to prepare and ways to find a physician.

*What is a Medical Home?A medical home is not a place; it is a process of communicating what your family needs and how you want to receive it. It is a philosophy—it is how you want your family to be treated and what you expect from those who work with you and your family. Come to this workshop and start to develop a medical home plan.

* Becoming a Great Leader! A great leader is a great advocate! This workshop will help you gain the skills and knowledge to become a great leader in your community and/or at the state level. You will learn tips about advocating for you and your family, how to impact legislation, effective communication skills, and letter writing.
