in the early 20th century when Shanghai was the financial capital of Asia. To Westerners, it was Asia’s Wall Street where fortunes were made and lost.

The Huangpu River divides the two Shanghai’s, east & west, past & future. It serves as the city’s shipping artery both to the East China Sea and the mouth of the Yangtze River. At 632 meters the Shanghai Tower is the tallest building in Shanghai and certainly the best place to see the magnificent city from – more than a bird’s eye view they say.

Shanghai Tower ObservatoryAt 632 meters the Shanghai Tower is the tallest building in the city and currently the second tallest building the world. The observation deck found on the 121st floor is currently the world’s highest observation deck.

Chinese Foot MassageAs the heart can be described as your body’s engine, so can your feet be seen as the shock absorbers. Taking up to 15 000 steps every day and about 70 000 miles in a lifetime this is an important part of the human body. Especially in Chinese culture. In the West, the protection of such a complex part of the body still lies very much in wearing the correct footwear, but in the East, the concept of holistic medicine means that much more attention is paid to the health of these appendages.

Water Village – Zhujiajiao (known as the Venice of Shangahi)Zhujiajiao is an ancient town that has existed on the bank of Dianshan Lake, at the foot of Dianshan Hill for over 1000 years. You will be taken back in time as you enjoy the beautiful water features, ancient arched stone bridges, dugout canoes, strange streets paved with stones and elegant gardens.

The Ahn Luh Zhujiajiao is located in town. It is a boutique hotel which was built around a half-century-old mansion called “Wu Feng Lou” which was used for Chinese opera performances. Enjoy lunch in this amazing setting.

Shanghai Restaurants:

Dinner at Lost HeavenThe concept and design behind the restaurant is drawn from artistic and cultural elements of minority lives in Yunnan. The founders continuously search for indigenous recipes and cooking techniques from the Yunnan region. They combine what they learn with Western and Southeast Asian cuisine to bring more inspired dishes to their customers

FogoSet in a heritage building, Fogo is a rooftop lounge bar and restaurant frequented by locals. Muted lighting, shiny marble and low seats and tables, with artistic-looking installations scattered about. Plus, ample terrace space. The food manifests as that sort of photogenic, nicely plated steaks, seafood and fusion dishes (tandoori Caesar salad). Drinks are your standard mix of fruity, strong and bitter flavours, but they're worth a try for the solid execution and the hint of creativity.

Ye ShanghaiThis restaurant is located in one of the Shikumen houses, made of grey bricks and red stripes. Their cuisine is as impressive as its setting. There are six carefully selected chefs including Master Chef Zhang. They are tasked with dazzling the taste buds of Shanghai’s food lovers with their contemporary interpretations of the classic dishes from Jiangsu, Zhejiang and Shangai.
