Mental Health Student Supports

Think like a Youth Mental Health First Aider (YMHFA)**: Use the ALGEE steps to support youth mental wellness.

Assess for risk or harm: Observe and notice. “What do I notice about this student or this class that is out of the norm (i.e., heighten frustration, more animation, increased stress, tense discourse, etc.)

Listen nonjudgmentally: Lean in, stay curious, and provide a space and time for them to talk/share their concerns/ stress. This is about them sharing and you listening with empathy.

Give Reassurance and Information: Validate their feelings and reaffirm your support for them. Share any factual information and resources that may be helpful to them. Say: “I’m here for you. You’re safe here. We’ll support each other.”

Encourage Professional Help: Say “I’m concern about you and there are people who can help you process your stress during these challenging times.”

● How to identify SCUSD support staff: If you are a school with a Student Support Center (SSC), contact one of your SSC staff. List of SSC school sites.

● If your school is a middle or high school with no SSC, contact your school counselor.

4

● If you are an elementary school that does not have an SSC, make a referral to the Connect Center, the district resource center.

*If your school would like the YMHFA training, please contact Jacqueline Rodriguez at [email protected]

Encourage Self-Care: Encourage self-care strategies that are safe, interesting and familiar to the youth. Say “What are some things you do to help lessen anxiety or stress? Let’s brainstorm together.” Examples: Gratitude journaling, mindfulness practices, listening to music, drawing, exercise, etc.

Guidance for School Administrators in SCUSD in response to potentially strong reactions from students5

1. Meet with Student Leaders and prioritize safetya. Student leaders can be strong allies in a successful and coordinated expression of civic engagement.

Student leaders include formal leaders such as ASB members as well as informal leaders such as team captains, club leadership, peer mediators, and students known to be leaders amongst their peers

b. Meet with student leaders and remind them that our school and district support their rights to peaceful assembly and free expression, and student safety is the most important priority.

i. If students plan a walkout in protest, remind student leaders the intent of a walkout and how actions align with purpose of the walkout.

ii. Encourage students to conduct activities on campusiii. Brainstorm with students about activities they would like to engage in on campus which serves the

intent of their protest.c. Review school policies and rules regarding student code of conduct which still need to be followed.

i. Ensure respect among all students. Ask all students to be respectful of students who may not wish to participate and/or students who may hold opposing views.

ii. Engage students in ideas for improving campus safety, security, and culture.d. Inform students that any student who leaves campus will be marked “Unexcused Absence.”e. Inform students that there might be increased adult presence on campus.

2. Offer Counseling and Supports a. Students may require additional levels of support during this time. If support services need to be accessed,

refer to your Student Support Center or the district-wide The Connect Center. Additionally, school counselors should be available to support students as needed.

3. Communicate with Teachers and Staff regarding potential protestsa. Here’s a template for communicating with staff: Staff Communication Letterb. Remind teachers to share with students that activism is a part of the learning process. c. Teachers can support this by encouraging student voice and empowerment.

6

d. Remind teachers and staff to use discretion in voicing either support or opposition regardless of their personal views.

e. Prepare staff in advancei. Designate roles for supervision of protests and for those students remaining in the classroomii. District staff will support hallway supervision. Encourage teachers to stay with students who remain

in the classroom (However, use your administrative discretion with regards to safety and supervision of students). See District Support List here: Serna Support List

f. Remind teachers that other than an “unexcused absence”, there should be no other academic repercussions and/or disciplinary actions.

g. Adopt a non-combative approach to student protest/walkout. 4. Communicate with Families and Student

a. Here is a sample of Letter to Familiesb. Robocall from SCUSD central office per Communications

5. Stay in touch with Instructional Assistant Superintendent on any plans that may emerge. 6. Plan for logistics and operations on day of the event

a. If students are threatening to protest/walk out:i. Plan a safe route with law enforcement and staffii. Do not try to prevent or obstruct students from leaving

TIPS FOR TEACHERS/STAFF

Teachers play a critical role in the creation of welcoming learning environments in which students feel free to engage in the learning process regardless of their personal beliefs. This includes avoiding the appearance of partiality toward any student, political or religious ideology, race, ethnic or cultural group, etc.

Staff are encouraged to work together with site leaders as a school community to plan and engage students in coordinated age-appropriate activities in the classroom or on campus. Such activities may include classroom discussions, art activities, debate, letter writing, critical thinking/problem solving activities, community circles, etc.

If a staff member feels compelled to participate in a protest/walk out, they should speak with their supervisor to address their concerns and discuss alternate avenues (such as taking personal time and arranging for a sub).

Staff should not spontaneously abandon their teaching responsibilities and walk out while students are present. Such behavior could inhibit students from feeling that their teacher is creating a learning environment in which students are free to express differing beliefs or attitudes without fear, whether real or perceived, of repercussion.

Establish an Emotionally & Physically Safe Learning Environment

● Create space for student voice & dialogue● Listen ● Refrain from judgement or sharing of personal views● Do not shame or blame● Validate feelings● Maintain routines & norms ● Recognize students in distress ● Know available resources & how to access help● Be mindful of self-care

8

Safety First (Priority to create safe spaces for dialogue)

● Set a safe, inclusive tone in your classroom.○ Let students know “You’re safe here. This is a safe space to share and learn. I’m here for you. ”

● Listen for understanding ● Be calm and reassuring. Use Affective Language (I feel __ when you __.)● Understand that students may be feeling strong emotions and honor those emotions. They may not know how

they feel, and that’s ok. Honor that not all students will react the same way. Remind them that it is typical to experience emotional and/or behavioral difficulties following traumatic events.

● Do not force a student to talk about the event if they don't want to. This may be more harmful than helpful for the student.

● Engage with community partners on your campus for support (before/after school programs; supplemental providers). Many of our community educators are persons of color, and often come from the communities within which they serve.

● Recognize parents may also be dealing with racialized traumatic stress. Be sensitive to their lived experiences.● Conduct a community building circle around safety, physical and emotional safety. You can access guidelines on

how to run a community circle here:○ Elementary circle guidelines

○ MIddle/High Classroom Circle Guidelines

You may also reach out to Mai Xi Lee should you need assistance with circles or developing circle prompts. [email protected]

Be Trauma-Informed (How do you show up for kids?)

● Create a physically and emotionally safe environment○ Withhold judgment. No matter our beliefs, it’s our job to make sure our students feel safe, supported and

valued. ○ Understand yourself, and recognize your own beliefs, privileges and responses. ○ Use active listening skills - ask clarifying questions, seek to understand rather than respond.○ Validate student’s experiences and feelings.○ Maintain routines and norms.

9

○ Talk with students 1:1 regarding behavior concerns - avoid discipline approaches that give way to shaming.

○ Balance normal school expectations with flexibility. Consider postponing large tests or projects that require extensive energy and concentration following significant events.

For additional training resources on Promoting Resilience and Trauma-Informed Strategies contact Mai Xi Lee [email protected] and/or Victoria Flores [email protected] to schedule a training.

Student Voice (How do you leverage this moment to elevate student voices)

● Teach a lesson on social justice● Encourage civic engagement● Create space for student voice and expression

○ art projects, healing circles or other activities during lunch, classroom space, or school eventsFor additional training or resources on promoting youth voice, and developing transformative spaces for youth, contact Marcus Strother, [email protected]

Recognize Students in Need of Support

● Notice any student who may need more support - notice changes in behavior, academics, social interactions, and attendance - get help if concerned.

○ Refer to your school’s Student Support Center ○ Schools without Student Support Centers may refer to the school counselor and/or to the Connect Center

to help link students/families with available community resources ○ Mental Health Community Resource list

For additional resources or support, contact: Victoria Flores, Student Support & Health Services Director [email protected]

Recognize When You are in Need of Support● Take care of yourself so you can take care of your students. Try some mindful breathing

10

● Be self-aware of how we are showing up and modeling self-regulation for students (i.e. maintaining calm demeanor in addressing concerns).

● Eat well, exercise, engaging in fun activities, take a break, find time to self-reflect, allow yourself to cry, and find things to laugh about.

● Additional support is also available through your Employee Assistance Program (EAP) - contact MHN EAP at www.members.mhn.com and register with the code "sia", or call (800) 227-1060.

Sample Talking Points for Use by Staff with Parents/Students:

While every person who cares about kids, and cares about the safety of our nation's some schools have been deeply moved by the tragedy in shooting death of Stephon Clark, there are widely held and differing opinions about how the nation should react to this tragedy. · It is our expectation that students will respect the rules of our school and remain on campus during the school day to protect their safety and the safety of others. Students will have ample opportunity for personal expression. · We respect the fact that many of our students may desire to express their strong feelings and emotions. We are working with our student leadership groups and staff to discuss avenues that allow for students to express their feelings and emotions while remaining on our campus. · Act in ways that do not place the cause in a negative light. · As we develop plans—such as protests, walkout activities, optional creative projects, or classroom discussions—we will ensure students are aware of the options available to them.

Dear Families, With the upcoming announcement of the investigation of the police shooting of Stephon Clark, the city of Sacramento is braced for renewed attention to the outcome of the announcement as well as any strong community reactions. While this issue weighs heavily on all of our hearts and minds, I want to provide some guidance on how our school plans to ensure a safe learning environment. At [INSERT SCHOOL NAME] our top priority is teaching and learning. We respect and support the right of our students to advocate for causes that are important to them and welcome the opportunity to work with any student or student group to discuss appropriate and creative ways to do so while at school. Any student wishing to participate in activities can contact me or any school administrator at any time so we can make plans for how to engage in a planned activity on campus and under the safety and supervision of adults. I encourage you to talk to your student(s) about how they may be feeling about this issue and the importance of expressing themselves in appropriate ways at school. As educators, we also recognize that student activism is a part of the learning process. When kids are passionate about an issue, it is an opportunity for educators to help students see the connection between curriculum and real life. We will be doing this in school, aligned with our curriculum and state standards. In addition, it is important to know that disorderly conduct that disrupts school operations is not acceptable and will be handled compassionately but firmly, in accordance with our school’s code of conduct. We are proactively working with students, counselors, support staff and community partners to ensure any student-led efforts are handled in the most peaceful, respectful way and in the best interest of our children. Finally, regular attendance reporting mechanisms will be enforced. Students who leave campus or do not report to class will be marked with an unexcused absence. Thank you for your continued support of [INSERT SCHOOL NAME]. Please let me know if you have any questions.

Sincerely,

Estimadas Familias,
