God Bless our High School Graduates

Dear Parishioners, Today is the Feast of the Body and Blood of Christ (formerly called the Feast of Corpus Christi).  Jesus gave us his body and blood to feed upon so that we would live in Eternal Life (i.e. to know the Father and Jesus whom he sent).  How important it is to constantly deepen our Faith in this great mystery.  I say Mass every day and regularly need to re-profess my belief that Jesus is truly present in this sacred host and wine.  If I don’t make this constant renewal, then my reception of Jesus in Holy Communion becomes just a habit.   Today may I encourage you to receive Jesus with renewed devotion.  Some short but powerful prayers can be:  Jesus come into my heart; Jesus I believe you are truly present in my Holy Communion; My Lord and My God; Jesus please transform me into your likeness.  One prayer that I frequently say is; Jesus please come into this area of my life (I name the area) that needs to be healed of its brokenness.  I pray that each of us today will grow ever stronger in our faith in Jesus’ holy presence in the Eucharist. Peace and joy and love, Fr. Joe

The Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ In our modern times, a symbol can seem to have lost its value. The most recognizable “signs” are ones we see on the road or the branding in advertisements. The logos for major companies don’t do much more than perk our interest or disdain. They surely don’t deliver on their promises for ourlives to be happier, healthier, and easier. On this feast of Corpus Christi, we hear the account of the Last Supper. This was Passover, an ancient sign of the covenant of Moses. The Hebrew people celebrated God’s providential care for His people. To the listening disciples, Jesus makes a very bold claim. “This is my blood of the covenant.” At the time of the first Passover — the redemption of the Hebrew people from slavery to the Egyptians — the blood of the sacrificial lamb was spread on the lintels of the doorpost. Tomorrow, some of the disciples would witness the blood of the new covenant spread across the wood of the cross. Christ’s Body and Blood are more than a sign. They are a sacrament. In the sacrament, the sign makes real what it signifies. More than ritual, a sacrament enacts truth of the covenantal love of God and His promise of fidelity. It’s a promise God keeps. The same bread and wine of that first Holy Thursday liturgy becomes — throughout the centuries and until the end of time — the very Body and Blood of Christ. On this feast, we celebrate the unfailing covenantal love of our God. As you partake in the Eucharist today, and next Sunday, and the Sunday after that, remember that you receive neither a meaningless sign nor an empty offer. You receive God Himself, as He fulfills His promise to remain with us always.

Winner of the Marist ScholarshipCongratulations to Avery Post, this year’s winner of the Holy Rosary Marist Scholarship. Avery will receive $500 to use towards his college expenses.

Father's Day is ComingOur Adult Faith Ministry will be offering special Father's Day Mass cards to members of our church beginning this weekend. The cards will be located at the entrance of the church and are provided at no charge. Next to the cards will be a "Book of Names." Please put the name of a father (living or deceased) you would like to be remembered at Mass on Father's Day. The "Book of Names" will be placed on the altar at that time.

Fr. Joe's AnniversaryJoin us in Marist Hall today for a rousing celebration of Fr. Joe's 46th ordination anniversary. Fr. Joe was ordained to the priesthood on June 3, 1972. Let's give him a round of applause and hearty congratulations after Mass as we partake of delicious treats prepared by our Fellowship Ministry. Let's also be sure to include him in our prayers as well.

Bake and Craft Sale ComingThe Holy Rosary Bake and Craft Sale is coming on Saturday, June 9th in Marist Hall. The fun begins at 9 a.m. and will continue until 4:30 p.m. The proceeds will be used to help the Parish House and the Upshur Literacy Volunteers. Members of the committee will be contacting parishioners this week to ask for baked goods or craft items. For more information, please contact Sarah Ziems, at 472-2431 or Brother Roy.

Holy Rosary Track StarsHoly Rosary Church was well represented at the State Track Meet when Samuel Walker, and Kennedi and MaKenzie Lewellyn from Buckhanon Upshur High School, along with Sarah and Avery Post from Lewis County High School, traveled to Charleston last weekend. The Lewellyn’s competed in the pole vault, 4x200 and 4x400. Kennedi tied the school record of 9’6” in pole vault at regionals and broke Brooke’s stadium record. Samuel ran the 4x400 and placed 6th in their heat. Avery placed 15th in the 400 and currently holds the school record in the 4x800. Sarah competed in 3 events: the 100 meter hurdles, 300 meter hurdles, and the 4x200 bringing home 4th, 6th, and 11th places respectively. She also holds records in 4x55 shuttle hurdles and the 4x102 shuttles hurdles. Congratulations on a great season! Your Holy Rosary Family is proud of you.

Ministry of GreeterOur church is in need of more Greeters. Can you come half an hour before a Saturday or Sunday Mass once a month to greet members of the church and extend a warm spirit of welcome?  It sounds simple and it is. But that feeling of welcome is so important. Men, women, and families

Crosslines Needs Our HelpHelp! Crossline needs our help! They are desperate for several items: shampoo, toothpaste, deodorant, and bath soap. Please help our neighbors by donating to this worthy cause. You may leave your donations at the entrance of the church and someone will happily deliver it to the Parish House. Thank you for your generosity!

A Thank You NoteTo Father Joe, Brother Roy, Deacon Rue and the entire Holy Rosary Family,Thank you very much for all of the prayers, thoughts and blessings. Our little angel, Isaiah Gabriel is doing very well. Our Father almighty has healed him! Hopefully and God willing, he will continue to do well and outgrow his condition. As parents, we cannot thank you enough. We have always believed in the healing power of prayer. Our church family was, and is, one of our sources of strength. Sincerely, Iris and Gaylord CarilloSarah Post Awarded Knights ScholarshipThis Year the Knights of Columbus Council 603 was pleased to announce the 2018 Father Mark T. Gallipeau High School Scholarship. The scholarship was established through the vision of the Elkins Council of the Knights of Columbus. Council 603 offers one scholarship to an active Catholic high school senior. Applications were open to all active members of the Holy Rosary, Saint Patrick’s of Coalton, and Saint Brendans’s parish. One $2000 scholarship will be awarded (divided into four $500 payments over four years) as long as the student is enrolled in school. The Father Mark T. Gallipeau Memorial Scholarship in intended to recognize a Catholic high school senior who has demonstrated commitment to their school, church, and community and has exhibited academic achievement. This year Council 603 Knights of Columbus was honored to select Sarah Post of Holy Rosary Parish. Congratulations, Sarah! Same as Last Week! We are grateful to those who have already contributed to the Catholic sharing Appeal but to date, only 26 of our families have donated to the Catholic Sharing Appeal.  We now have $8,773 and are well on our way to our goal of $11,100 but we need a donation from everyone!  From now on, every penny is returned to Holy Rosary for our use in paying preliminary bills to prepare for our new building.  Please send in your contributions no matter the amount.  You may send the envelope directly to the diocese or place it in the collection or give it to Fr. Joe or Bro. Roy., but make sure that it is marked “Catholic Sharing Appeal.”

Christian Fellowship Meeting

The next meeting of the Christian Fellowship Group will be held on June 3rd after the 9 a.m. liturgy.

Summertime We pray that all of our parishioners have a happy and healthy summer. Parents, please continue to bring your children to mass during the summer. Oftentimes, we don’t see families at mass until School of Religion begins in the fall. Also, please remember to make your weekly contributions when you return from vacation. Our parish bills do not stop during the summer, so we need everyone’s help with this.

New Summer Mass TimePlease note our new mass time on Saturday at Holy Rosary Church is 5 p.m. This time is only for the summer and it begins on June 2 and ends on September 1, when we will begin our 7 p.m. liturgies again. Remember to mark your calendars: Saturday summer mass time at

Holy Rosary is 5 p.m. from June 2 through August 25.Church LookingOur church is looking for someone who can do a small but sorely

needed cement job and replace some bricks in the back of the rectory. If you know of someone who might be able to do that, please contact either Fr. Joe or Bro. Roy.

Scheduling MassesThank you to all who have offered masses for loved ones at Holy Rosary Parish. Please be aware that although you ask for a certain date, it may not be possible to schedule a mass on that date. Canon Law requires that one of the parish masses each weekend be offered for the intentions of its parishioners, or “for the people.” Since we only have two masses per weekend at Holy Rosary, that leaves only one open mass that can be used for your intentions. Dates fill up quickly, beginning in January. Please know that we will schedule your requests as close to the date as possible. You are also welcome to request dates at Sacred Heart and West Virginia Wesleyan when they are in season. It is possible that a priest may go on vacation or need to attend a diocesan meeting when there are specific masses scheduled. We will reschedule your masses as close to the specific date as possible. If you have any questions, please contact Father Joe.June Celebrations!Do you have a birthday or special celebration in your family for June? Celebrate with your parish family! Mary Who? Mother of the ChurchWhy does the Church need a mother? The ancient wisdom teachers used to answer a question with a question: Why did Jesus need a mother? He needed a mother to give him life according to the flesh. The Second Person of the Trinity was to become visible in Jesus Christ so as to live among us. Like the rest of us, he needed the love and care of a mother. Christ’s body is still with us as the Church! We members are also in need of the care and love of the Mother of God.
