Extending the progress track of previous month and putting constant efforts to innovate and discover by adding little everyday Intergenerational Learning Centre (IGLC) is motivated and moving with the spirit of dynamism, disseminating healing vibrations and transferring legacy of knowledge across generations to encourage, educate and empower different sections of society to make it more humane.

In total 8 session of Training of educators were held in a month long series training programme for Elderly Educators on various academic subjects from 26th of July to 29th of August, 2017. Up till the submission of the first progress report of previous month we had completed 5 sessions in training series, rest are covered in this report in continuation with the previous one.

1. English- a new outlook, 6th session in a series of Training of educators was conducted by Ms. Rafath Praveen from Delhi Public School (DPS), Dubai. She has good experience of teaching English in Delhi Public School, Mathura road. She is M.Phil, pursuing a research degree in History subject and had a good experience of teaching in DPS, Mathura road.

Elderly educators learning use of creative material (Children Magazine) designed for children from Ms. Rafath Praveen

During training session, She emphasised on very interesting activities such as use of attractive and colourful children’s magazine and story books for teaching purpose, playing small subtitled video’s for students which would help them enhance their listening skills, reading skills as well as learning correct pronunciation of words, what methods could be employed to have Fun with words like identifying and filling missing words in a paragraphs, antonyms, synonyms, etc., how games can be integrated in teaching technique. Etc. Overall approach of Ms. Praveen was balanced, easy and how to make learning fun to students.

Impact and Feedback- Educators excitedly involved themselves in the act of Dumb Charades game. Some of them were very good in performing act and quick in guessing the words. While doing and completing worksheets, there was a little healthy competition for doing it first between them. They had fun in learning and enjoyed the session.

2. Mathematics is a Puzzle or a solution- orientation by Mrs. Raj Sahani. She is 73 and served as a faculty in Sardar Patel Vidyalaya, Lodhi estate for 35 years. She illustrated the gaps where students majorly make mistakes in understanding maths, counting, and measurements and focused on lucid ways to teach number systems, measurements, conversion of units, etc.

Impact and Feadback- It is the first time during training session that Elderly Educators took up the challenge of explaining a hypothetical but practical mathematical problem on board given to each of them, displaying a potential and confidence of delivering best way of teaching among each other. Educators submitted mixed response to the session.

3. History is Mystery or reality - Training session and interactive talk by Mrs. Maninder from Delhi Public School, Mathura Road. She has been a trainer in the prestigious-Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration (LBSNAA), a premier research and training institute on public policy and public administration in India and also had experience of working with many NGOs.

Mrs. Maninder- Repeating History with the use of Acronyms, mnemonics and timeline tracing of events with Educators

She helped turning our insight of History a mystery to History of realities by weaving events into stories with timeline through acronyms, mnemonics, etc. She suggested some online media tools, website and recommended some books to know history in correct perspective.

Impact and Feedback- Well when it comes to history discussion goes on. Following the set trend stories moved from Pre-historic era to modern democratic system and even touched the vistas of universe and spirituality.

Received permission letter from Basic Shiksha Adhikari, Gautam Buddha Nagar, Noida to set up “Intergenerational Learning Centre” in Purva Madhyamik Vidyalaya, Sector 12, Noida on 22nd

August, 2017. It is remarkable to see Bureaucratic authority and staff in Govt. Institutions- BSA office working enthusiastically with new energy and perspective to implement educational policies in real time and fast track mode at ground level through their hard work and devoted to set a benchmark in education system.

3. Meeting with Parents

Parents of selected students have been called for meeting with Dr. Prasun Chatterjee, Elderly educators and Healthy Aging India team on 4th of September, 2017 to explain them in detail the concept of Intergenerational Learning Centre (IGLC), its working methodologies, provided facilities and to seek their written consent to allow their child to attend IGLC classes after school hours for 2 hours. Turn out of parents was very encouraging and all of them willingly and in healthy mindset signed the consent letter in presence of Dr. Prashun, school staff and other members. Parent’s aspirations to see their child grow and become a better person in future could be heartfelt during their interaction and clearly visible in their eyes.

Designing of IGLC classroom is based on to develop a networking-integrative approach in students and to provide them a vibrant colourfully rich aura in classroom. The concept of design (Big Bang in Universe to Beginning of life on Earth to Development of Human Civilization) was provided and facilitated by IGLC team and creative hands on work are of students from College of Arts ( Miss. Phaguni, Miss.Vandana and Mr. Sonu) who took up the work of designing walls, blackboard, entry doors etc voluntarily. Framed Pictures for the classroom was obtained with courtesy from Mrs. Renuka Teneja, founder of “Windows The Art and Craft Corner”. Amazing work in pictures was done by school going children (5 -10 years old age group), which could serve as a motivation to our selected students of PMV, too.

Depending on the availibilty of our Chief Guest and Guest of Honours, date of Inaugration ceremony was fixed on 14th September, 2017. Lots of preparation was done to make the inaugral ceremony successful. Project Investigator of IGLC Dr. Prashun Chatterjee took initiative of sending Invitation cards for the events in person, Dr. Vijay from AIIMS helped in designing of IGLC Banners, Boards and mementos etc, Raj Bhaiya from AIIMS supported in miscellaneous work, School staff of PMV provided the required material to organise the function, Team of Healthy aging India- IGLC team, all worked with well cordination.

Speech by Chief Guest, Guest of Honour and Educators

Chief Guest noted Journalist, Philanthropist, Educationist and Director of IGNCA Shri. Ram Bahdur Rai launched Intergenerational Learning Centre programme. He emphasised that  concept of IGLC is very much interwoven in the culture of Indian societal System and this can be a connecting   link between two generations- Senior citizens and children to transfer the legacy of educated senior citizens to the young generation. He also proactively supported that such concepts should be  more and more discussed, written and covered by the mainstream media and published even in Yathavat magazine. Everybody should encourage and participate in such national building initiatives starting from media, teacher, educationist, etc, enthusiastically.

Other distinguished and noted guest of honor of IGLC inaugural ceremony Mr. Lokesh Gupta, President of Rotary club, Mrs. Jaishree Dubey-wife of Shri. A.K. Dubey, Secretary, Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Mr. Pamposh Kumar, Scientist F, Department of Science and Technology, Mr. Rajiv Dugal, Executive Diector Times Foundation also delivered inspiring words to mark the occasion.  

Mr. Lokesh Gupta , President of Rotary club south delhi explained how rotary club is working hard for social development and played a role for eradication of Polio.  He has shown interest and support for IGLC and said such kind of project should be taken on a larger scale. 

Dr Prasun Chatterjee, Founder president of Healthy Aging India, explained the concept of Intergenerational Learning centre, which is very popular in United States in different format. The triggering factor to start IGLC in India was conceived when he met prof. Peter Whitehouse. He is  running an Intergenerational Learning Centre in Cleveland,Ohio.In the view of their IGLC concept the senior citizen are mentoring  nursery kids. But In Indian system of IGLC, senior citizens has bigger role as an educators. There is huge untapped human resource potential as retired educated senior citizens, who have life experience and knowledge to guide young generation. In IGLC Noida, senior citizens after going through training process from various subject teachers from reputed school will educate and mentor student of Class 6th. He is optimistic to spread this concept across the country in both urban and rural India. There is a possibility of association with Prof Peter through his organization and vice President Yachneet Pushkarna. He thanked  Ministry of culture for funding and supporting IGLC project and offered his regards to  Shri Gyan dipankar ji and heartily thanked Chairperson of Gandhi Smriti and Darshan Samiti Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi. 

Project cordinator IGLC, NOIDA Miss.Pushplata Bhardwaj emphasised that Present Indian demography is of Young generation and Youth should actively participate to harness the potential of demographic dividend as Youths are energetic, working and potential generation of the nations.  She focussed that Youngster should follow the inclination of their heart and do whatever they feel best and good for the country realising a dream of constructive India. 

All the educators Mr. Gulshan Kumar Naveen, Mr. Chander Shekhar Rai, Mrs. Saroj, Mr. Ashok Ahuja, Mr. Din Dayal Sharma were very passionate about their role to create future of nation by educating these child. Educators shown promise not only to educate these students but will also adopt them as their grandson and granddaughter which were quite inspiring. 

Students were gifted story cards (Given to IGLC with courtesy by Dr. Anuradha, faculty of Hindi in Sardar Patel Vidyalaya, Lodhi estate,Delhi) and stationary material at the end of ceremony by our distinguished guest.

Best Wishes- Dr. Mahesh Chandra, Minister of Culture who was also invited as a chief guest of this programme, sent his message and regards for the success of this program. He hoped that in future IGLC will be developed as a replicable educational model meeting intellectual, social, psychological, emotional, nutritional, and eco- cultural needs of students as well as elderly people. Based on success of IGLC, Ministry of culture is enthusiastic to promote and replicate IGLC model across country.
