ON THE COVER:

TEAM WORK! This photo was taken on the day of our 90th anniversary – January 29, 2019 – in the Multi-Purpose Room of the Main House on the Washington Valley Campus of The Seeing Eye. This is the amazing team that created more than 250 new Seeing Eye partnerships in Fiscal Year 2019. Photo by Victoria Alfonzo.

People who are blind or visually impaired come from across the United States and Canada to The Seeing Eye in Morristown, New Jersey, to learn how to work with and care for our extraordinary dogs. These graduates – students, retirees, attorneys, authors, homemakers, factory workers – are now pursuing their goals with independence, dignity, and self-confidence. We hope you enjoy some of their stories contained throughout this report.

Letter from the President and CEO of The Seeing EyeThis letter is accompanied by a photo of Glenn D. Hoagland, President & CEO of The Seeing Eye, with a golden retriever puppy.

Thanks to your generous support, in Fiscal Year 2019 The Seeing Eye brought 255 individuals who are blind or visually impaired from across the United States and Canada to our campus in Morristown, New Jersey, to learn how to work with and care for our world-renowned Seeing Eye® dogs. In addition, we also visited 640 graduates and new applicants in the United States, including Puerto Rico, and Canada.

This year proved to be an auspicious time for me to begin my tenure as President and CEO of The Seeing Eye. We celebrated our 90th anniversary throughout 2019, with events such as ringing the closing bell at NASDAQ in New York City, welcoming more than 200 graduates and their guests back to our campus with an alumni reunion, and displaying posters at railroad stations throughout New Jersey proclaiming Seeing Eye dogs® as “New Jersey’s cutest export.”

In addition, we opened the Dr. Robert H. Harris Canine Pavilion, providing housing for up to 80 dogs in training to become Seeing Eye dogs. The pavilion offers each dog direct access to covered outdoor exercise areas. The pavilion was named for the founder of the Golden Dome Foundation, the facility’s principal donor, who was the husband of the organization’s president, Mary Ellen Harris. And on the final day of Fiscal Year 2019, which ran from Oct. 1, 2018, through Sept. 30, 2019, I replaced Dr. James A. Kutsch, Jr., who retired after serving 13 years as President and CEO.

Other highlights this year include:

In 2019, The Seeing Eye received 395 applications and accepted 281 candidates into our program. (Some candidates accepted in 2019 will attend in 2020.) At the close of the fiscal year, there were 1,664 active Seeing Eye teams throughout the United States and Canada.

At our Chester breeding facility, 465 puppies were whelped from 66 litters, with an average litter size of 7.0 puppies. The success rate for the dogs that began the training program after returning to campus from their puppy raising families and went on to graduate from the program or entered the breeding program was approximately 70 percent, allowing us to train only the very best dogs, and to find the very best match for each of our students.

We had 567 active families participating in puppy development in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland, and New York by providing foster homes for our puppies. These puppy raising families returned 404 dogs to The Seeing Eye to begin their four months of formal training to be guide dogs. There were 37 puppy raising families on the waiting list.

In April, Morris Township Mayor Jeff Grayzel and the Morris Township Committee presented us with a proclamation honoring our 90th anniversary, and honored us by officially changing our street address to 1 Seeing Eye Way.

Family Day, an annual gathering of puppy raisers and their families on The Seeing Eye campus, was attended by 1,259 people. There were instructor demonstrations of dog training, graduate speeches, and photo exhibits of puppies and career change dogs. There also were presentations

from Seeing Eye graduates about the difference the dogs have made in their lives. In addition, 50 puppy raisers who were graduating from high school were awarded college scholarships.

More than 2,100 people came to The Seeing Eye campus as part of our visit program. The Seeing Eye invites the public to attend a brief tour and learn more about our organization on most Thursday mornings and one Saturday per month. For more information, go to SeeingEye.org/visit.

Every Seeing Eye team working in the United States and Canada today is the culmination of a long process involving many hands, from our geneticist to our veterinarians to our puppy raisers to our instructors. And every step of the way you, our donors, are there with us. You make all of this possible. From all of us here at The Seeing Eye, thank you!

Sincerely,

Glenn D. Hoagland

Letter from the Officers of The Seeing EyeThis letter is accompanied by photos of the Officers of The Seeing Eye: Thomas J. Duffy, Chairman; Ari Benacerraf, Vice Chair; Margaret E. Howard, Vice Chair; and Glenn Hoagland, President & CEO. There also is a close-up detail from a mural, showing a young Seeing Eye graduate hugging her Seeing Eye dog, a yellow Labrador/golden retriever cross. Both the graduate and her dog have their eyes closed. The graduate is smiling and the dog appears to be smiling as well.

Dear Friends:

One of the most colorful achievements of 2019 was the addition to our Washington Valley campus of a mural, telling the story of Seeing Eye dogs… from puppies to partners!

The mural covers the walls, and even the doors, of the visitor’s entrance to the Main House, which houses our student dormitory and dining hall, as well as administrative offices. Each year, more than 2,000 people use this entrance to learn about our mission and to meet our amazing dogs. In addition, The Seeing Eye is a polling place for area residents, and they too use this entrance. It’s a wonderful way to tell our story to our many visitors.

The mural was designed by artist Caren Frost Olmsted with the help of Seeing Eye archivist R. Bruce Johnson, and then painted by staff, trustees, volunteers, and graduates, as well as students from a local middle school. Each portion of the section was marked off with tape, so people who are blind could also participate in painting by feeling the outlines of each image. We also created a video, so those who can’t see the mural – or can’t make it to campus – can still experience it.

More about the mural and the video can be found at www.SeeingEye.org/mural.

A highlight of the mural is an image of a young graduate kneeling to hug her yellow Labrador/golden retriever cross. It really captures the bond between graduate and dog. Thanks to your generous support, we created more than 250 new teams in 2019, and every one of them is a unique partnership. Our graduates leave here not only with enhanced confidence and independence, but a lovable companion. “My dog has given me so much,” one graduate recently said, “and all he asks in return is a belly rub.”

Thank you for making it possible!

Graduate StoriesInterspersed throughout this annual report are stories from people who graduated from The Seeing Eye in Fiscal Year 2019. Each story is accompanied by a photo of the graduate and his or her Seeing Eye dog.

Marlin Nagtegaal and Champ

“Champ has become a completely life-altering force, both physically and emotionally,” said Marlin Nagtegaal. Marlin and Champ, a German shepherd, graduated from The Seeing Eye in May 2019.

Marlin is the director of the Beckett School at Wilfrid Laurier University in Waterloo, Ontario, and also teaches at the school. “On top of that, I am director of music at a downtown Episcopal church,” Marlin said. “No time to get bored!”

Champ is Marlin’s first Seeing Eye dog. “I had no idea what to expect,” he said. “Having only become blind in the last five years, I have had a major lifestyle change, and Champ has made that transition so much easier. My work entails much traveling and Champ has made that so much easier for me. Not a day goes by without Champ getting complimented from people as we stand waiting for trains, stop lights, or line ups. I can’t thank you enough for what you have done for me and my family!”

Claudia Del Real and Jackson

Claudia Del Real and Jackson, a golden retriever, graduated in January 2019. Claudia, who lives in Whiting, Indiana, is a vocational rehabilitation counselor for the state of Indiana.

“Jackson goes to work with me, we go to stores together, we run errands, such as doctor’s appointments or going to the bank, and social events, including indoor and outdoor concerts,” she said. “We love going for long walks, usually three to five times a week. Whenever we go by a local business we frequent, I can feel Jackson turning his head, as if he’s asking me, ‘Are we stopping here today?’ He is an amazing guide and has been life-altering for me. I feel so much more independent because of him!”

Stacy Fuehrer and Onida

Stacy Fuehrer of West Allis, Wisconsin, graduated in May 2019 with her sixth Seeing Eye dog, a yellow Labrador retriever named Onida.

“I started a new job in a new city in December, and she really makes the commute easier,” Stacy said. “There are some wide street crossings, one with three islands… and one of those islands is at an angle!”

Stacy, who calls herself “a proud Seeing Eye graduate,” says Onida is all business when she’s in harness but when she gets home, she loves to play with a squeaky ball or while chewing a bone. “She enjoys giving her front paws to me, and will even try to be a lap dog,” Stacy said.

Christopher Zobrist and Carter

11

Chris Zobrist graduated from The Seeing Eye in March 2019 with his first Seeing Eye dog, a German shepherd named Carter.

“I’m currently taking some time off and applying to Stanford for a one-year master’s in education program. I’ll hear back from the admissions office in March, so that’ll determine our next big step,” said Chris, who lives in Berkeley, California. “In the meantime, we have time to travel between the Bay Area and Los Angeles to spend time with my parents and younger brother and sister.”

Chris said he and Carter go for long walks every day. “His favorite thing to do is to play fetch in my yard, and to play with my brother’s Shiba Inu, Daisy. They love running around together at my parent’s house.” He also loves going in the water, whether it’s dipping his feet in Chris’s parents’ pool or on the beach in Oahu, Hawaii, where they vacationed last summer.

Sharina Kershaw and Xander

“Xander is my Seeing Eye dog and my best friend,” said Sharina Kershaw of Lilbourne, Missouri. “He has shown me independence I never thought I would have in my lifetime.”

Xander, a golden retriever, is Sharina’s first Seeing Eye dog. Since they were matched in April 2019, the two have traveled extensively. “I love him for his travel skills, he is the best of the best,” Sharina said. “This summer we will go to Baltimore to see my best friend, then in Florida we’ll be going to see another friend, and then we’ll be headed off to Colorado to see family.”

Sharina said Xander loves to play outside, with his squeaky bone, and with a big orange ball. “He gets me through everything,” she said. “I am truly grateful to have him!”

Charlie MacDonald and Tula

Charlie MacDonald of Halifax, Nova Scotia, returned to The Seeing Eye in January 2019 to be matched with his fifth Seeing Eye dog, a black Labrador/golden cross named Tula.

“Tula is an excellent worker,” said Charlie, a retired civil engineer and the former executive director of the Nova Scotia Disabled Persons Commission. “She loves to work – she’s very focused and eager to please. She learns a routine once and is fine after that.”

Charlie said he goes to the gym every morning, usually out of the house by 6:30 a.m., and she sits quietly while he does spin class or swimming. “I take her harness off and she loves to get a pat from the lifeguards as she patiently waits for me to finish my swim or workout,” he said.

“She is a very loving dog and I am very pleased with her work.”

Jim Kutsch RetiresThis story has a photo of Jim Kutsch crouching next to his Seeing Eye dog, a yellow Labrador retriever named Easton.

Dr. James A. Kutsch, Jr., who in 2006 became the first graduate of The Seeing Eye to serve as its President & CEO, retired on September 29, 2019.

“Although my tenure as The Seeing Eye’s President and CEO has ended, I will always be connected through my Seeing Eye dogs and the many friends I’ve made through The Seeing Eye,” he said.

Glenn D. Hoagland, who has been leading non-profits for more than 30 years – most recently the Mohonk Preserve in Gardiner, N.Y., New York’s largest non-profit nature preserve – started the next day as President & CEO of The Seeing Eye.

“I leave The Seeing Eye in good hands, and look forward to a great future for The Seeing Eye under Glenn’s leadership,” Jim said. “He brings a fresh perspective to this position to help guide us over the next decade, into our 100th anniversary year and beyond."

Garden State FondoThis story has a photo of a man wearing a bicycling jersey, shorts, and helmet. Across the chest of the jersey reads Garden State Fondo. He’s sitting on a bench with a young black Labrador retriever puppy. Above the bench is a sign reading “Kisses”. The caption reads: Bill Ruddick, Executive Director of Garden State Fondo, with a black Labrador retriever Seeing Eye puppy in our “kissing booth.” Photo by Victoria Alfonzo.

The Garden State Fondo – previously known as Gran Fondo NJ – is an annual bike tour through the picturesque New Jersey Highlands. It was held September 8, 2019, and drew more than 2,200 cyclists who could choose from between five different courses, ranging from the 18-mile “Breve” to the 105-mile “Gran.” The event raises money for area non-profits, including The Seeing Eye!

The Seeing Eye staffs a rest stop along the route, handing out water, energy bars, peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, and bananas, but also cheesecake, chocolate-dipped cannoli, and even espresso! There also are staff members, volunteers, puppy raisers, and of course puppies to cheer on the riders… and there even was a puppy “kissing booth” to inspire the riders to keep pedaling.

The seventh annual Seeing Eye Doggy Dash was held on September 7 to coincide with the weekend of events surrounding the Garden State Fondo at the request of Fondo organizers. Both the Garden State Fondo and The Seeing Eye Doggy Dash set records with the number of registered participants. The Doggy Dash featured a 1-mile pet-friendly walk held at the Vail Mansion in Morristown and the 5K was held on the previously USATF certified course at nearby Lidgerwood Park. Nearly 300 participants, plus dogs and many young children registered for the event.

Graduate Society: Terrie Mailhiot

Terrie Mailhiot is a proud of member of The Seeing Eye’s Graduate Society. “I donate to The Seeing Eye because I want to give something back to help somebody else,” she said.

Terrie, who lives in Surrey, British Columbia, has been working with Seeing Eye dogs for 40 years. Her current partner is a yellow Labrador retriever named Nick.

“Nick is a very loving, gentle dog. He's very good in his work. He's such a happy dog! He's excited whether we're getting on the bus or going into a store. He just loves being with me,” she said.

“The Seeing Eye has made my life not just easier, but nicer. It's nice to walk with a dog! And I love talking to him, too. He's a great listener.”

54

Half Century ClubIn 2019, nine Seeing Eye graduates were added to the Half Century Club, signifying the milestone of working with Seeing Eye dogs for 50 years or more.

The Dinner PartyThis story has a photo of Tom Duffy presenting the Dorothy Harrison Eustis Award, which is a miniature statue of a German shepherd, to Dr. Gustavo Aguirre, with Jim Kutsch standing between them. The caption reads: Dr. Gustavo Aguirre, left, is presented the Dorothy Harrison Eustis Award at The Dinner Party by President & CEO Jim Kutsch, who retired in September, and Seeing Eye Board of Trustees Chair Thomas J. Duffy. Photo by Alicia Savoly.

On May 7, The Seeing Eye held our annual fundraiser and tasting event, The Dinner Party: Celebrating 90 Years at Ninety Acres, which featured top New Jersey chefs. The fourth annual event was held at Natirar – Ninety Acres and raised more than $250,000.

At the event, the Dorothy Harrison Eustis Award – our highest honor – was presented to Dr. Gustavo Aguirre, chief of ophthalmology for the Department of Clinical Studies at the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine. Since 1985, Dr. Aguirre has served as an adviser to The Seeing Eye’s veterinarians; he is also a former member of The Seeing Eye’s Board of Trustees. Dr. Aguirre’s research has led to medical advances in the field of ophthalmology not just for dogs, but for humans, too.

Plans are underway for the next Dinner Party to be held May 5, 2020, at the Pleasantdale Chateau in West Orange, New Jersey.

Other events were held on-campus including a donor recognition reception at the start of the fiscal year last October to thank the annual donors who live locally; and our Heritage Society/Shepherd Society Luncheon in June for donors who have made planned gifts to The Seeing Eye.

Advocating for GraduatesThis story has a photo of Melissa Allman with her Seeing Eye dog, a yellow Labrador retriever named Luna, in the lobby of the main house at The Seeing Eye. The photo was taken by Seeing Eye Senior Manager of Instruction & Training Tom Pender.

In April 2018, The Seeing Eye hired lawyer and Seeing Eye graduate Melissa Allman as its Senior Specialist of Advocacy and Government Relations.

This year, Melissa represented The Seeing Eye at a meeting with the Deputy Assistant Secretary of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development to discuss proposed new regulations concerning assistance animals; organized and presented at a New Jersey State Bar Association continuing legal education seminar hosted at The Seeing Eye campus; kept graduates informed via our website of new state laws concerning guide dogs and service animals; cultivated working relationships with airlines for the benefit of all guide dog handlers; made educational presentations to State Police officers who conduct security screenings at courthouses, and appeared with her Seeing Eye dog, a yellow Labrador retriever named Luna, in a video to be used for future trainings; advocated on behalf of The Seeing Eye in our effort to have Seeing Eye dogs designated as New Jersey’s state dog; and was instrumental in the New Jersey Department of Agriculture’s development of a policy regarding service animals.

Melissa also designed a new survey for Seeing Eye graduates about the interference they experience while working their dogs. Our Instruction and Training department will use the survey data to educate the public and law enforcement about the profound effects interference has on guide dog teams, and to help better prepare graduates for the kinds of interference they may face in the field.

Pennies for Puppies

This story has a photo of students and teachers standing in front of a row of lockers with several Seeing Eye puppies.

Franklin Elementary School in Franklin, New Jersey, has an 8th grade leadership club, “Altitude,” which fundraised for The Seeing Eye through our Pennies for Puppies program. The students made presentations in the auditorium for the entire school explaining The Seeing Eye’s mission, and representatives of The Seeing Eye – both two-legged and four-legged! – visited the school.

In Fiscal Year 2019, Pennies for Puppies and Dollars for Dogs volunteers made more than 200 presentations, attended by approximately 10,000 people, and raised more than $100,000 to support The Seeing Eye!

Dr. Robert H. Harris Pavilion Dedication On June 13, 2019, The Seeing Eye held a dedication for its new state-of-the-art kennel, the Dr. Robert H. Harris Canine Pavilion. The facility was named by the project’s principal donor, the Golden Dome Foundation, in memory of its late founder, Dr. Robert H. Harris. The facility serves as living quarters for the dogs that live at the Morristown campus during the four months of training it takes to become Seeing Eye dogs.

Golden Dome Foundation President Mary Ellen Harris spoke at the dedication, which was followed by a luncheon inside the new facility’s exercise yard.

This page has a phot of two people standing in front of the Dr. Robert H. Harris Pavilion on the campus of The Seeing Eye. The caption reads: President & CEO Jim Kutsch with his Seeing Eye dog, a German shepherd named Vegas – both are now retired – and Golden Dome Foundation President Mary Ellen Harris. Veterinary Recognition AwardsEach year, The Seeing Eye receives nominations from our graduates and puppy raisers for our Veterinary Recognition Awards. These veterinarians, and many others who remain unnamed, have gone “above and beyond” as they provided extraordinary service and care to Seeing Eye dogs in all stages of their lives. Our puppies, our dogs-in-training, and the Seeing Eye dogs working with their owners all benefit greatly from the generosity of these veterinarians and their staffs.

This year, The Seeing Eye recognizes Dr. Christine E. Bryan at the Animal Health Center of Mississippi State University in Mississippi State, Mississippi.

110

Back CoverOn the back cover is a photo of a golden retriever puppy wearing a green bandana that says Seeing Eye Puppy Raiser Program. The puppy has her eyes closed and her mouth open, so it looks like she’s laughing! The caption reads: Zani, a golden retriever in The Seeing Eye Puppy Raising Program. This photo and many more of the photos found inside this annual report can be found in The Seeing Eye’s Puppy Raiser Calendar, available at SeeingEye.org/calendar. Photo by Kara Anderson.
