From the Sailing CommodoreThe 4th of July events at Lake Beulah Yacht Club did not disappoint. The Pancake Breakfast was great as usual. The Egg Toss had young winners. It was a joy to see the generations of families old and young having fun. Fortunately, the weather cooperated and the Fireworks and were outstanding. They just keep getting bigger and better. My boys were in town and came to Beulah. Our family enjoyed a round of golf at Morningstar. To top it off, I got a hole-in-one on the 3rd hole! A grand time was had by all, especially me! It was truly a Lake Beulah 4th of July to remember.

July is a month of regattas. The Optis had the LBSS Opti at Beulah and GLSS at Geneva. It is a traveling month for the X fleet. They have Trap at Pine, Quad at Nagawicka, GLSS at Geneva, Extreme at Oshkosh, WYA at Pine, and ILYA at Geneva. For MCs, LBYC hosts the ILYA MC Invite on July 14-16. Please visit the club, participate in the festivities, and welcome the visitors. The following weekend is MC Masters at Cedar. The C’s, after having a busy June, have the C Invite at LaBelle.

Each weekend, I go to the Signal Boat to familiarize the teams with the windlass. This past Sunday, was fortuitous. The PRO anchored at the start, and when it came time to set the finish, he lost his anchor. The Signal Boat was prepared to anchor in the deepest part of the lake. Bob Mueller took charge of the pedals, and mastered the art of dropping the anchor. No problem, the Signal Boat stayed put and the C’s finished. When the last C crossed the line, Bob hoisted the anchor. Job well done!

Looking forward to the MC Invite, hope to see you on the water.

Your Sailing Commodore, - Steve Barth

State of the House & Groundsby: John Porter

As I approach the end of my term as house and grounds, I want to give you an update on the state of the grounds as I see them. Most of our equipment is in good shape, but there is no denying that we have aging items around the club. In particular, the various coolers, HVAC, seawall, landscaping, and piers are items that will continue to need attention in the near future. As we budget, the coolers in the kitchen and bar are requiring more and more attention. The HVAC needs biannual checkups that are always finding small repairs needed. The 1978 section of the seawall is crumbling, needing some masonry work soon. We have taken down a lot of dead trees this year and the desire to replace those trees has been expressed by some of the membership. The piers are old enough that repairs and painting are regular needs.

My point here isn’t to complain or raise alarms. These items are normal given the age and use level of our house and grounds. What I do want to say is that the job is getting bigger, not smaller. When there is a new face behind the House and Grounds, they deserve unwavering positive support, both verbally and with contributions toward solving problems. During my time in this role, the best thing I learned was who I could lean on when I couldn’t solve a problem alone. Please strive to be someone who is a resource to the club facilities and an ally to the person in the role, even when you see something that you feel isn’t perfect. It has been a great pleasure to contribute to the facilities of LBYC in a meaningful way. Thank you for your support and I hope you will join me in enthusiastically contributing toward a positive, fruitful term for the new House and Grounds person.

DID YOU KNOW?!LOCAL OPPORTUNITY TO RECYCLE!

Did you know that the Boy Scouts in East Troy collect cans for their troop? Bagged cans are collected behind Martin’s Hardware ON MAIN STREET.

It’s a great way to recycle and provide funds to a local cause.

LBSS Amazing Race Results! By: Jeff Hudson

The Board of Directors of the Lake Beulah Sailing School (LBSS) hosted its annual fund raiser with an Amazing Race followed by dinner and silent/live auction. Proceeds from the evening help to defray instructor and equipment costs.

At 4:45 pm, twelve teams of eight players received their instructions during a competitors briefing at the LBYC. Teams then boarded pontoon boats with designated drivers, following safe boating practices throughout the competition. Five local properties were designated as sites for skill challenges. At each site, twelve sailing school students assisted with docking of boats and timing for each of the nine challenges. While driving back to the yacht club, teams did their best to answer thirty one Lake Beulah trivia questions. Correct answers generated time credits, reducing each team’s skill challenge aggregate time.

Following dinner at the club, auctioneer Kent Haeger delivered both silent and live auctions. With over 100 attendees, the action was lively and often very entertaining. Bidding was especially hot for a week’s stay in Jackson Hole, an LBYC parking spot, freshly baked cookies, etc.

On behalf of the students, the Board thanks all who participated including our many generous donors, contributors, student volunteers, and race participants. Congratulations to the winning race team – Lindey’s Crawlers. Top Trivia Team was Red Eye.

Have you seen it? Kent Haeger’s new WASZP saw plenty of action over the 4th of July weekend between Annie Haeger, Will Haeger (pictured above), Luke Ramsay and of course Kent. The WASZP

features the latest trend in sailing technology, foiling, to fly above the water. From what this reporter can tell, you spend as much time IN the water as foiling ABOVE it.
