Now that the first few weeks of school are over, we will begin sending homework for you to complete with

your child at home. The first activity involves your child’s letter link, which they chose themselves. Letter

links are explained a little bit more at the bottom of the page so you can learn why we use them in our class. For

homework, work with your child to put the puzzle pieces of their name together. Work with your child in

writing the letters in their name and also putting them in order of how their name is spelled. The most

important thing is that you are working with them. It does not have to be perfect!! You can glue or tape the

puzzle pieces on the paper that is given to you with the homework. Afterwards try to have them think and draw

pictures of other words that might also start with the same letter in their name. They can draw and even write

the words for what they are drawing on the back of this paper.

Letter links is a literacy-learning

tool that uses children's natural interest in their own names to build their understanding of the connections between

sounds and letters.

What Is a Letter Link?A child's letter link consists of two elements: the child's printed name plus a picture for a word that starts with the same

letter and sound. For example, Brennen's letter link consists of his name plus a picture of a brontosaurus, and Maya's

(below) includes her name plus a picture of a mitten.

Letter links can be used by children and teachers in many ways: to label children’s artwork and belongings in the

classroom; to identify children in classroom signs, lists, and messages; and to create fun and engaging classroom literacy

activities.

The letter links name-learning system enables you to introduce the students to letter names and sounds. As children use

letter links to identify themselves and their classmates, they begin to develop an understanding of the alphabetic principle

— the concept that alphabet letters and the sounds of speech are connected. Children also build phonological awareness

— the ability to attend to the sounds of language as distinct from its meaning.

pegamento o cinta adhesiva en sus piezas de la rompecabezas y pone las piezas en el papel que se le da a usted

con la tarea. Cuando su hijo termina con eso tambien puede dibujar y escribir cosas que empiezan con la

primera letra de su nombre en el otro lado deste papel.

SOBRE LOS ENLACES¿Qué son los enlaces de letras?

El sistema de letras enlazadas liga la etiqueta onomástica del niño a un dibujo de un ítem cuya primera letra es la misma, en forma y sonido representado, que la del nombre en cuestión. Por ejemplo, la etiqueta de una Carlota puede constar de su nombre y un dibujo de un caballo o una culebra; la de un Teodoro, de su nombre y un dibujo de una tortuga o de una tienda (de campaña).

A partir de la afinidad natural que los niños tienen con su propio nombre, el sistema de letras enlazadas le permite presentar las letras y sus sonidos a los niños. A medida que los niños utilicen las letras enlazadas para identificarse a sí mismos y a sus colegas, comienzan a adquirir nociones del principio alfabético, i.e. que hay una relación entre las letras del alfabeto y los sonidos de su lengua. Los niños también adquieren una conciencia fonológica—la habilidad de prestar atención a los sonidos lingüísticos y no directamente al significado de las palabras que oyen.
