KUNG FU CLASS FEATURESAll classes are granted access to the following class features:

Kung fu Iron Shirt Unarmed Combat

KUNG FUA kung fu style represents the way a character controls, builds and utilises their chi. Each style is unique in the powers that a character gains, and the outlook they have on the use of internal energy. The actual physical attacks and defences used in combat are shared between styles; the important difference is internal, not external.A style of kung fu will determine whether a character can use their chi to move faster than the eye can follow, or send a blast of lightning from their hand. The less significant techniques of hand to hand combat – the particular style of punches and kicks, are covered by the Unarmed Combat class feature. The kung fu class feature grants the following abilities:Kung fu styleChoose a kung fu style. Each kung fu style grants access to specific chi feats and related powers. Each kung fu style also provides additional at-will, encounter and daily powers that can be chosen instead of the equivalent class powers. As a character advances in level their specific kung fu style will grant them new powers.Feats may have a kung fu style as a prerequisite and there are special Iron Shirt and Unarmed Combat techniques that are limited in this fashion.Concentrate ChiTwice per encounter you can use a chi power. These chi powers must be chosen from the powers known by the character. A kung fu style and class grant chi powers for use with this feature.

IRON SHIRTIron Shirt training is a method of focusing chi to prevent physical damage. Advanced practitioners allow students to attack their limbs with swords and staves or bend spears with their throats – and sustain no cuts or bruises.Iron shirt practitioners withstand punishment through physical conditioning, but more importantly by focusing their chi when struck. This prevents attacks from causing damage and acts like armour. These armour types may be enchanted, and require a minor action to turn on. There may be penalties applied to skill checks and movement speed when using iron shirt. This is caused by the amount of concentration required to maintain this defence.

Iron Shirt techniques are granted to each class and may also be acquired using the Armor Proficiency feat.Defensive StanceSome classes provide access to additional defensive capabilities that are the equivalent of using a shield. These stances require one hand to be free and offer a shield bonus (which applies to Armor Class and Reflex defence). Switching from one of these defensive stances to another is a free action.

UNARMED COMBATUnarmed Combat is the physical representation of a character’s martial arts and compliments the internal kung fu style they practise. Unarmed Combat is the techniques a character uses when attacking and varies significantly from practitioner to practitioner, even within the same kung fu style. The particular techniques a character uses are chosen from the list of Unarmed Combat weapons that are covered by their weapon proficiencies. Each ‘weapon’ is an entire martial style that includes many attacks and defences and usually has several forms demonstrating combat applications of the technique.Changing weapon techniques requires a minor action. Each Unarmed Combat weapon technique may be enchanted like a normal weapon. Some Unarmed Combat styles require two hands to use and may not be combined with an Iron Shirt defensive stance. All Unarmed Combat styles may be combined with Iron Shirt armor techniques, which are independent from the defensive stances. Each class provides access to several Unarmed Combat techniques at first level and others may be learned using the Weapon Proficiency feat. There are advanced techniques that some kung fu styles teach, and these are only available if the prerequisites are met.

Class features: Combat Leader, Commanding Presence (inspiring or tactical only), Inspiring word, Iron Shirt, Kung fu, Unarmed combat

Commanders have received extensive training in war and the art of leading men. Many have passed military exams that include written historical treatises and feats of weapon skill. Regardless of the source of their training they are highly prized by all military forces and can demand a high salary almost anywhere they travel.Commanders use a variety of weapons and hand to hand styles, but all of their attacks are accompanied by a distinctive ochre glow as their chi manifests. The people assume commanders are righteous and will defend the weak, discipline roudy warriors and create order wherever they travel. Those who display these traits are beloved of the people and receive hopitality. Commanders who do not honor their obligations are shunned and slandered behind their backs, but never to their faces.

Class features: Barbarian Agility, Feral Might, rage strike, Rampage, Iron Shirt, Kung fu, Unarmed combat

Champions are warriors who favour powerful strikes and direct confrontation. Their kung fu specialises in focusing chi to cause massive damage and can even emulate fierce animal spirits at advanced levels. While many believe that Champions lack subtlety nobody denies their effectiveness in battle, especially once they enrage and channel the power of a spirit beast. The majority of a Champion’s attacks are accompanied by a bright glow around the attacking limb, with a burst of light upon impact as the chi is rammed into their target. Their charges and lightning fast follow-up attacks have a signature red after effect as the Champion flies past. Champions often serve as elite warriors in any fighting force but are best known for being the enforcers of the law for local magistrates and rulers. Champions who wander the lands in the way a Knight-Errant does are looked down upon by their gainfully employed brethren.

The Knight-Errant is a travelling warrior who protects the people and rights injustice. They specialise in fast, mobile combat and have a wide knowledge of weapon skills to help them in their varied quests. Their fighting style is characterised by flurries of attacks and withdrawal to gain tactial advantage.A Knight-Errant’s powers are identified by the pale blue fire of their chi that outlines their limbs and weapon. There are very few other defining characteristics in a Knight-Errant’s combat style since they vary so widely. It is very unusual for a Knigh-Errant to pledge themselves to a lord of any kind. They are far more likely to travel in a small band or to briefly associate themselves with a village or town. Knights-Errant are beloved by the people for their reputation of assistance and bravery, but looked down upon by the warrior classes as undisciplined and flighty. This poem by Jia Dao sums up the spirit of knight-errantry:

For ten years I have been polishing this sword; Its frosty edge has never been put to the test. Now I am holding it and showing it to you, sir:Is there anyone suffering from injustice?

A priest may be the embodiment of enlightenment or a foul villain depending on the gods they venerate most.Priests are somewhat separate from the social structure, being respected by all. KUNG FU STYLESKung Fu styles are a defining characteristic of a character. They consist of;

1. Chi Focuses2. Feats for use with the Concentrate Chi class

feature3. Style specific powers4. Primary and secondary attributes

Some styles include: Style specific feats Class Features

Every kung fu style provides one or more Chi Focuses and associated feats and a series of style-specific powers. Chi focuses are described in detail in the following section, including the feats they grant access to.Kung fu powers always include an at-will, encounter and daily power at level one, and may include additional powers at levels 2, 3, 7 and 9. Powers granted by a kung fu style are optional and a character may choose one of them or a class power, as desired. These powers may be swapped when a character retrains.Every character learns to manipulate chi differently and draws on the most powerful aspects of themselves to apply their kung fu. As a result all

kung fu powers operate on primary and secondary attributes that are chosen by a character at level one. These are then used for all kung fu powers. Many kung fu styles grant access to style-specific feats. These are secret techniques of the style that nobody else can ever learn and are often distinctive. Anyone witnessing the use of these feats is likely to be able to identify the kung fu style being used. Some styles teach specialised skills that replace a class feature. These are fundamental techniques of the style, but learning them may limit a character’s ability to make full use of their class powers. These class features are only open to characters whose class contains one of the class features that is listed for replacement, other characters may not learn these class features.Characters may learn any kung fu style regardless of their class. This allows for great versatility or specialization but choose carefully because the choice of kung fu style is a commitment to a path and may not be changed later in a character’s career.Kung fu styles only provide powers up to level ten. Once a character reaches the paragon tier there are paragon paths that provide further specialisation in kung fu.

CHI FOCUSESChi Focuses are the fundamental principles behind kung fu styles. They determine the manner in which characters have been taught to manipulate chi - many chi based powers are unavailable without training in a particular Chi Focus. There are three categories of Chi Focus: Spirit, Body and Mind. Each kung fu style has one or two Chi Focuses that define the manner a character uses chi. Styles that only include one focus are considered to be pure and styles that have more than one are diluted or broader in application. There is a hierarchy of recognized power for chi focuses; Spirit focuses are considered most powerful (and therefore best), followed by Body and Mind focuses. This distinction is largely prejudice but may have an impact on character interactions in actual play. Each chi focus makes at least two feats available to practitioners of kung fu styles that include the chi focus. Each kung fu style may place limitations on the feats that can be chosen, and this will be specified in the kung fu style descriptions.

SPIRITSprit Chi Focuses teach characters to build and manipulate their chi and the chi of the surrounding world. All the training and forms of the kung fu style are devoted to teaching a character how chi

acts and can be acted upon in turn. Spirit concentrations are considered superior to other concentrations because they teach mastery over chi, which is the ultimate path to kung fu power.

BUILDING CHIBuilding Chi focuses on building and storing chi. Styles that teach it include many traditional forms and chi gung exercises, and their students spend a great deal of time practicing them. Performing these techniques promotes the flow and storing of chi, resulting in higher chi and faster chi recovery. This chi focus provides two feats to choose from; Chi Building and Chi Recovery.

CONTROLLING CHIStyles that include Chi Control are all about manipulating the flow of chi, through the practitioner and their environment. Circular movements are very common in these styles because curves of chi are easier to manipulate than lines. This chi focus provides two feats to choose from; Chi Channelling and Elemental Chi.

FOCUSING CHICharacters who develop skill in Focusing Chi train themselves to concentrate their chi into points. This

Page 20: dragoninninthheaven.files.wordpress.com  · Web viewCharacter Classes. Use classes derived from classes in the core books. The chosen classes come from the D&D 4E Player’s Handbook,

pinpoint focus generates great power in short bursts. As a result, styles that teach this concentration tend to be direct and use straight attacks. This chi focus provides two feats to choose from; Chi Focusing and Internal Chi.

BODYBody Chi Focuses teach characters how to focus their chi to enhance their physical prowess. Body concentrations lack subtlety and are considered crude by some warriors, but nobody can deny their effectiveness in battle.

POWERThe Power Chi Focus teaches characters to use their chi to augment attacks - their entire focus is on causing damage with powerful strikes. All strikes have chi focused through the attacking limb to cause massive crushing damage on impact. Styles that teach the Power Chi Focus use powerful hand and foot attacks of all types, but often lack the finesse of other styles. This chi focus provides two feats to choose from; Chi Strike and Forceful Chi.

TOUGHNESSThe Toughness Chi Focus is Iron Shirt chi gung at its best. Characters are trained to harden their protective chi to prevent any damage to their body, even by deadly piercing attacks. This training greatly increases the efficiency of defensive chi. Toughness based styles use attacks of all types and many grappling styles include this focus. This chi focus provides two feats to choose from; Hardened Chi and Invulnerability.

SPEEDSkill in the Speed Chi Focus requires mastering the flow of chi to make your body lighter, and the almost contradictory skill of sending bursts of rapid chi through the body to improve reaction time and movement speed. Many styles teach these skills but there are no particular techniques favored by their practitioners. This chi focus provides two feats to choose from; Chi Speed and Flurry of Blows.

MINDMind Chi Focuses teach characters to control their chi and use it to improve their mental faculties. Mind powers are considered the weakest chi focuses, but those who practice them consider Mind focuses to be the true path to enlightenment.

MEDITATIONCharacters who study the Meditation Chi Concentration internalize their stored chi and use it to help themselves achieve an altered state of consciousness. This enables them to remain calm and in control of their bodies at all times, and even accelerate the natural healing functions of the body by force of will. This chi focus provides two feats to choose from; Body Control and Chi Healing.

AWARENESSCharacters that specialize in the Awareness Chi Focus learn to tune in to the chi of all things around them, becoming more at one with the universe. This skill allows them to remain calm and rarely be surprised even in the most unexpected circumstances. This chi focus provides two feats to choose from; Alertness and No Mind.

MYSTICISMThe Mysticism Chi Focus is a catch-all for the mystical, magical kung fu styles that teach their students to develop their chi manipulation skills in unorthodox ways. Controllers often favour the Mysticism concentration, and some have developed different styles that teach even stranger powers than those presented here. This chi focus provides three feats to choose from; Defensive Aura, Ghost Hand and Restoration. Most styles that teach the Mysticism chi focus will only teach one of the associated feats, specifying the limitations in the kung fu style description.

Bonus Feats: You gain two bonus feats at first level. These feats must have a Chi Focus prerequisite that matches the focus of Fire Dragon Kung Fu

Attributes: Choose a primary and secondary attribute for this kung fu style. These attributes are used for attacks and damage.

Fire Dragon kung fu is an ancient style and may have been one of the very first significant kung fu systems. Legend has it that the Dragon and the Phoenix taught a young man the style and that he used it to conquer a kingdom. Since that time the symbol of the style has been a five clawed dragon’s claw. The style is based on chi control and power, specialising in attacking and having little focus on mobility or defence. Practitioners are renowned for standing toe to toe with their opponents and overwhelming them with powerful attacks. In defence they use parries and rotations of the torso rather than footwork. The dragon stances that cause fire to engulf the practitioner are also very distinctive and greatly feared. This is an easily recognised style because of the red flames that accompany many of the attacks. Champions, Knights-Errant and Soldiers favour this style and it may be found almost anywhere. There is almost always an instructor in military organizations and teachers can be found even in remote villages. Some say this proliferation of the style was caused by the founder’s army spreading across their conquered territories, but nobody knows for sure.Because this is such an aggressive kung fu style it is not highly respected by the common people. However, since there are so many practitioners it does not have a bad reputation either.

GOLDEN TEMPLE BELLS KUNG FU

GOLDEN TEMPLE BELLS KUNG FUChi Focus: Toughness, Power

Bonus Feats: You gain two bonus feats at first level. These feats must have a Chi Focus prerequisite that matches the focus of Golden Temple Bells Kung Fu

Attributes: Choose a primary and secondary attribute for this kung fu style. These attributes are used for attacks and damage.

Golden Temple Bells kung fu is based on toughness and power. This kung fu style specialises in iron shirt and aims to make practitioners invulnerable to all damage. The main training method is a series of chi gung exercises that focus chi in all areas of the body, one by one. This builds resistance and power, finally resulting in a visible golden aura of chi that encloses the character and is shaped like a temple bell. A side effect of creating this armour of chi is that practitioners of Golden Temple Bells may also use their chi to create shields of force that protect others and to greatly enhance strikes with force damage. The origins of this style are disputed, but all sources agree that it was perfected in Buddhist temples. Disputes focus on the styles that were combined into this one, or whether Golden Temple Bells was a unique discovery. The commonly accepted history is that monks combined several styles of iron shirt and chi building exercises together and over generations of training created the current system.Soldiers, Guardians and Spirit Wardens favour this style for its amazing defensive capabilities. It is commonly available throughout the lands since teachers may be found in most temples or military organizations. Because the system has been spread from temples the common people regard it highly. There is an assumption that practitioners of this style had to work long and hard at scriptures and endure great punishment – and develop good character as a result. This will be an advantage to anyone knowing Golden Temple Bells kung fu and they will receive good reactions if the martial art they practise is known, right up until they perform an action that proves otherwise.

Any creature that enters a square next to it or starts its turn there takes 5 fire damage. You can give the divine servant the following special command.Standard Action: Close blast 3; targets each

creature in blast; Primary attribute vs. Reflex; 2d6+Primary attribute modifier fire damage

Divine guidance: If you have not given the divine servant a command by the end of your turn it will use its attack without moving if there are any enemies in range. If there are no enemies in range it will move its speed in the shortest path to an enemy, then use the attack. In both cases it will target as many enemies as possible.

LIGHTNING FIST KUNG FU

LIGHTNING FIST KUNG FUChi Focus: Speed, Power

Bonus Feats: You gain two bonus feats at first level. These feats must have a Chi Focus prerequisite that matches the focus of Lightning Fist Kung Fu

Attributes: Choose a primary and secondary attribute for this kung fu style. These attributes are used for attacks and damage.

Lightning fist kung fu is based on speed and power, emphasising fast movement and chi powered strikes. This style has only average defensive capabilities but great offensive power. Much of the training involves speed drills and hand-eye coordination tests at full attack power. After many years of this training the practitioner is introduced to the chi gung exercises that allow their chi to explode from their body. All the years of full power speed training have focused their chi into their extremities already, and it is bursting to be released.Everyone agrees that this style came from the southern mountains although there are two different masters credited with its creation. The first is the hermit Fallen Mountain who retreated from life into the mountains after the death of his wife and children. The second master is Silent Mantis, governor of a mountain stronghold. Current lightning fist schools descend from both masters and have a well known rivalry since the Fallen Mountain branch claim that Silent Mantis was a disciple of their founder.Champions, Knight’s Errant, Spies and many Soldiers favour this style for the striking power and ability of advanced practitioners to strike at range. It is commonly available and taught everywhere. Many military groups have masters who will teach it and there are low level masters who can teach the basics readily available. Masters of this style are easily recognized because of the lightning in their special attacks. The population do not assign any particular traits to warriors who are trained in this style. They are seen as slightly more cultured than those who perform Fire Dragon kung fu but not treated with the respect granted to some other styles like Golden temple Bells.

WORKAREA

CLASSESMake the Guardian (Paladin) a Taoist warrior serving the gods and seeking immortality through worthy deeds and internal alchemy.Guardians commonly use Taoist Prayer kung fu, which is a soft style containing massive power in deceptively simple moves. It combines healing and control with powerful attacks. Taoist Prayer will include the Silk Guardian class feature since that is appropriate to a soft kung fu style

KUNG FU STYLESThe core styles (all containing class features for the role) are below. These will all be described in the first version. Other styles may be added, but could be published later.Defender styles:

Golden Temple BellsTaoist Prayer

Striker Styles:Fire Dragon Lightning Fist

Leader Styles:Buddha’s PalmWhite Jade

Controller Styles:Glorious LotusHeavenly Flame

Less common styles may not have class features associated with them, or have less powers. Any style that is a full system will always have all 3 level 1 powers. Other powers up to level 9 are optional since some systems are not as advanced. Some of these systems are:

Transformation – mostly enhancing stancesEnergy Body – stances with reach and

sustain minorInvisible sword – turns chi into cutting bladesThousand poisons – causes ongoing damage

and weaknessSilver Moon – sword based stytleRaging demon – based on demon grappling

KUNG FU TECHNIQUESMany kung fu powers are taught by a particular style but there are some skills that are unique. These are single powers (encounter or daily). How are they learnt?

Feats that allow power use? Invest healing surges for the day? When the

power is used?Check other source material for ideas.
