UPCOMING YOUTH EVENTS-Youth Jam

What is Youth Jam?

The second Sunday of each month youth from St. Mark’s and Holy Spirit churches gather for music, games, and reflection.

All Youth grades 6th through 12th are invited.

Time:  7PM

This month’s Youth Jam will be at Holy Spirit in Eldersburg , March 8th and April’s Youth Jam will be at St. Mark’s on April 19th.

ON EASTER SUNDAY, our children will spend the Sunday School hour hearing about the resurrection, enjoying an Easter egg hunt, and decorating St. Mark's wooden cross with flowers.  We invite you to join us for these activities as well as for a reception in the social hall.  There are two ways you can help us prepare.  We will be collecting bagged candy to stuff the eggs (peanut and tree-nut free, please) now through Sunday April 5th- please bring donated candy and place in the designated box in the narthex We would also appreciate your contributions of STOREBOUGHT cupcakes, beverages, and other treats for the reception; please see or contact Amy Myers ([email protected]; 410-905-8125) regarding what you wish to bring.  Thank you!

GOODY BAGS FOR NURSING HOMEI am organizing a project with my confirmation class.  I hope that you will be able to assist me in completing the project.  I would like to make goody bags for the residents of a local nursing home.  Some of the items I am looking to collect are mini games such as crosswords, word searches, and saduko, as well as sugar free candy, motivational cards, and other items that you feel the residents would enjoy.  I need these items by March 29th.  I will place a basket upstairs in the narthex and downstairs to collect the items.  Thank you in advance for any help you are able to provide.

Email from St. Paul’s Lutheran Church to St. Mark’s Youth

June 29-July 3, 2021Minneapolis, Minnesota

Every three years, 30,000 high school youth and their adult leaders from across the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America gather for a week of faith formation known as the ELCA Youth Gathering. Through days spent in interactive learning, worship, Bible study, service and fellowship, young people grow in faith and are challenged and inspired to live their faith in their daily lives.

The theme for the 2021 Gathering is “boundless: God beyond measure,” based on Ephesians 3:19 - “I want you to know all about Christ’s love, although it is too wonderful to be measured. Then your lives will be filled with all that God is.”

St Paul’s welcomes your youth to join us!

At least 10 youth and three adult leaders from St Paul's will be heading to Minneapolis for the 2021 Youth Gathering! Our youth and their families are working very hard to raise the funds needed for our trip, which is approximately $1,000 per person. Tentative plans are to travel to Minneapolis (probably by plane) on June 28 and return late on July 3.

We are already actively fundraising and making the plans necessary for youth to adult leader ratios. If you have youth interested in tagging along with our group, or if you have a small group of an adult and a few kids that do not want to go it alone, or, questions about the Gathering, please contact Rachel Murphy ([email protected] ) or Sandy Baber ([email protected]) as soon as possible.

Dear Sunday School Parent.

I am writing to you on behalf of the St. Mark’s Evangelical Lutheran Church Council as the incoming Council President. One of the major initiatives I have identified as a priority for the Council is the enhancement of the church experience for the children enrolled in Sunday School and Confirmation programs AND their families.

My wife Margy and I, are long time members of the church. Like many others we both drifted away from church in our teenage years after we were confirmed. Our decision to become regular church goers again was driven in large part by the birth of our children and our commitment to raising them in a Christian lifestyle. I feel certain that the parents of children at St. Mark’s today have similar motivation for maintaining their church attendance and enrolling their children in a religious education program.

As a result of bringing our children to St. Mark’s, Margy and I have enjoyed the fellowship and made many special and close friends. These are personal relationships that have become the majority of our social life and will last for the rest of our lives and we feel blessed to have become friends with so many special people.

One of the most important functions of the church, in addition to regular worship services, is introducing our children to God and Christ through Sunday School and Confirmation classes. I want that experience to be the best we can provide for them and for you. I am hoping that your commitment to your child’s religious training can be as rewarding for you as it has been for me and Margy.

In our effort to provide a rewarding lifetime experience at St. Mark’s the Council wishes to identify activities that you feel will be enjoyable and rewarding to your entire family and create an atmosphere that will make you and your children want to be a part of the St. Mark’s family well beyond the time your child participates in religious education. It is the Council’s desire to have these activities begin at a younger age for your children.

The Council wants to identify social events and fun times for all, and we are asking for your help. Therefore, I am asking you to please provide input on activities you believe will be enjoyable to your child and to you. These activities do not have to be at church and we will make them either free or affordable to all.

Some modest funds have been raised beyond our annual Youth budget to assist with these activities. In past years we have organized a variety of activities. These include: wintertime weekend day of swimming at a local indoor pool, snow tubing, movie nights at the church, indoor games at Four Seasons and summer family picnics at a park just to name a few.

Please feel free to share your thoughts on this very important matter with me and the Council. I can be contacted at [email protected]. Additionally, the Council meets the 4th Thursday of every month at 7:00 PM in the church Social Hall. The meetings are open to the members of the congregation. If you would like to address the Council directly, please let me know. Come to a meeting and you will be given the opportunity to share any matter of your concern with

me and the members of the Council.Thank you giving this careful thought and helping us make your St. Mark’s experience as special and rewarding as it has been for Margy, me and our special friends at St. Mark’s.

Yours in Christ,Ken ZieglerChurch Council President

If you have ever thought about sending your child to a Lutheran School then keep reading.

CARROLL LUTHERAN SCHOOL“Exceptional Education formed in faith Kindergarten through 8th grade”

Excerpt from letter from Carroll Lutheran School of Westminster, Maryland (CLS)

We want to take this opportunity to remind you and your congregation about our Conference Church Scholarship Program.

Through the Conference Church Scholarship Program, CLS will provide a 35% tuition discount to any family that is a member of a church in the Westminster conference. What’s more, the discounts that apply to families with multiple children enrolled at the school are based on this reduced tuition. This means a huge savings for families in your congregation and the opportunity for those families to experience the private Lutheran “exceptional education, formed in faith” that is uniquely CLS. St. Mark’s is a member of the Westminster Conference of the ELCA.

Some frequent Questions and Answers:Q: Can our congregation send more than one child to CLS under the program?A: Absolutely! Every family that is a member of a conference church qualifies for this benefit. There are no limits other than the family must be a current member of your church.

Q: Is the tuition benefit only for the first year?A: No. The tuition benefits will be active for all years that the family attends CLS. No other scholarship programs may be used for the same student in combination with this benefit.

Q: Does our church have to pay this tuition?A: No

If you are interested in learning more about CLS, contact the school to arrange a tour or call: It’s simple, just ask the family to contact the school to arrange a tour or call to discuss the details. Be sure you mention that St. Mark’s is referring your child to CLS.

Contact Pastor Carr, Board of Trustees member, if you wish for him to arrange a tour. If you want more information you can check www.CLSEDU.org. or phone 410-848-1050.CLS 1738 Old Taneytown Rd.
