Development

Practice counting ‘How many eyes, ears, noses, mouths, hands, fingers and thumbs have you got?’ Ask them to point to their body parts as they count.

You will need a favourite toy – teddy, doll, train, car etc and some everyday objects such a box, bag, etc Ask the children to put their toy in, on, under, next to, or above the different objects. When they are confident following your instructions ask them to tell you where the toy is e.g the doll is in the box, the teddy is under the bag Next or another time your child could put the toy somewhere for you to describe

Can you use blocks, counters, milk bottle lids, buttons or anything you have at home to make a group of 2, 3 , 4 and 5. Send a video of you counting to your portfolio on class dojo.  In school we encourage the children to touch each item as they count it using their 'counting finger' and to count slowly and carefully

Number hunt.Draw/write the numbers 1-5 on pieces of paper/card ( old cereal box maybe)Hide them inside or outside in the garden if the weather is fine.Children to find them and say what they are.You could add dots under the number for the children to cunt and to help them recognise. If outdoors they could then jump the same number of jumps that is on the card or if indoors they could clap that number.

Discuss the objects on the poster that the girl can hear. Are the children likely to hear a bird, car or trumpet if they go outside?Go for a short walk or out in the garden and record or list the sounds they hear.

Talk about the items that we can taste.Encourage the children to make a paper plate collages of itemsthat they like to taste, using pictures cut from magazines. You could stick these onto normal paper if you do not have a paper plate!

Invite the children to play a game of ‘Guess the smell’. Put itemswith distinct smells, such as flower petals, herbs, spices, coffee, vinegar, bubble bathin separate yoghurt pots/plastic bowl/ etc and seal the top with paper. Pierce the paper so that the children can smell and guessthe contents.

If possible allow the children to taste and handle food whist cooking with youIdentify the five senses and invite the children tohelp make something such as pizzas, cakes or whatever you like to cook, pausing to decide which senses are at workas they cut, chop and grate ingredients and eat them.Talk to the children about what they can see and smell and what do things feel and taste like.
