Hello, I hope you all had a wonderful half term break and managed to enjoy the wonderful sunshine. Our first recipe of the week of the new term is for cheese straws. A great tasty savoury snack. Making cheese straws was once a way of preserving cheese in the hot and humid climates. Making cheese straws was once a way of preserving cheese in the hot and humid climates.

Ingredients:

8og butter, chilled and cut into little cubes, plus a little extra for greasing

160g plain flour, plus a little extra for dusting

120g mature Cheddar, grated, plus extra for sprinkling

1 large egg, beaten

Equipment:

Large mixing bowl.

Sieve.

Rolling pin.

Wooden Spoon

Knife.

Greased Baking Tray

Greasing the baking sheets creates a layer of oil and when this is heated up during cooking your baking, it stops the baking sticking to the surface of the tray

As Always firstly wash your hands and pre heat the oven to 180C/160C fan/ gas mark 4

Weigh your ingredients.

Begin by sieving the flour into the mixing bowl.

Add the cubed butter to the flour.

Using your fingertips rub the butter into the flour until it looks like breadcrumbs.

it’s best to use your fingertips because the palm of your hand is much warmer and will soften the butter.

Next add the grated Cheese & Mix in.

Then add a beaten egg and stir in to form a dough.

Did you know, eggs are a great source of protein needed in a healthy diet.

Using a rolling pin roll the dough out on a floured surface and cut into strips.

You Can place the strips onto the greased baking tray or try twisting them by holding each end and twisting the strip of dough in opposite directions.

Sprinkle with a little grated cheese and ask your adult to place them in the pre heated oven.

Bake for 12 -15 minutes or until straws are golden brown. Then allow to cool before enjoying.
