Hennie van Heerden- His calling, nature.

There is a natural lighting in the photograph, there is also the movement of the wings used, they have used a quick shutter speed to make the wings look blurry, but to keep the body still. The photograph uses the formal elements of texture, colour and depth. The visual and formal elements help us to interpret the image narrative by adding the mood of relaxation by the calming colours of the pheasant’s feathers.

Rossella Vanon- Factice, beauty.

The name of this photograph is factice created by Rossella Vanon. The genre of the image is beauty. This image shows a woman modelling a makeup brand. Factice could be found on Rossella’s website and the context is that the women is showing off a brand of makeup. The purpose of the image is to advertise the makeup and make people want to use it. The photo has been edited to get rid of any imperfections in her skin, lighting has also been used to add shadows to one side of her face. The techniques that have been used are colour, tone and texture. The visual and formal elements help us to interpret the images narrative by giving the atmosphere of dullness as the photo is quite dark and gloomy, but there are pops of colour from the eyes and lips.

James Mcconachie- untitled, wedding.

The name of this photograph is untitled and the photographer is James Mcconachie. The genre of the image is wedding. The photograph shows a pair of newly weds stepping outside of the church. The photograph could be found of James’s website. The purpose of the image is to show the couples wedding day and to capture them together. The visual techniques that have been used are editing and lighting as the church would not be black and the outside wouldn’t be white. The formal elements that have been used are shape tone and form. The formal elements help us to interpret the atmosphere as love and affection.

Conclusion;

The similarities in the three images are they all to do with colour each of them has different types of colours, like in the first photo there is the colour from the pheasants wings, in the second it is the colour in the makeup and in the third the colour comes from the blacks, whites and grays. The differences in the three photographs are that they all use different formal elements and each show their messages in different ways, e.g. the second photo is used for advertising and has the message ‘buy me’, whereas the third picture has the message of ‘we want our day to be remembered’.

The third image is the image that is most effective in using formal elements to communicate with the audience because it emphasizes the shapes and shadows of the two people.

I sourced each of the photographs from each of the photographer’s websites.
