10. Asthma is a life-long disorder where swelling of the body’s airways frequently take place. Excessive amounts of mucus are produced along with the swelling, making it feel difficult to breathe and triggering coughing attacks. In the United States alone, roughly 22 million people have been diagnosed with asthma, and approximately 6 million of them are children.

Our bodies’ airways carry air into and out of our lungs, but for asthmatics (people with asthma), the inflammation and mucus build-up causes the airways to become restricted. As the airways become narrower, less air is able to pass into the lungs. A chain reaction can occur, causing the airways to narrow even more as the muscles tighten, allowing even less air into the lungs.

A student made a chart of different levels of organization in the body of a person with asthma.

Which level is most likely being changed when the airways of the lungs are becoming narrower?a. Cell c. Organismb. Organ System d. Tissue

11. In male organisms, meiosis results in cells that each have a special organelle that helps the cell move. Which organelle has this function?a. flagella c. endoplasmic reticulumb. ribosome d. Golgi apparatus

12. Students where organizing parts of an organism into a hierarchy. Which of the following statements would help the students correctly place an organ?a. a group of tissues that work together to perform a specific jobb. a group of tissues that belong to different systemsc. a group of tissues that are in the same organism d. a body structure, such as muscles or lungs

13.A student conducted an investigation by following the steps shown.• Place three raw eggs in a beaker filled with vinegar.• Wait for the vinegar to dissolve the hard outer eggshells. The

inside of each egg will be surrounded by a thin membrane.• Measure and record the initial mass of each egg without its

shell.• Fill one beaker with distilled water, one with a• sugar-water solution, and one with a saltwater solution. Place

one of the eggs in each beaker and soak for 24 hours.• Measure and record the final mass of each egg that has been

soaking in its liquid.• Compare the initial and final mass measurements for each egg.

The table shows some data from the student’s investigation.Investigation Data

I nitial Mass of Egg

Without I ts Shell (g)

Liquid in Which Egg

80.0 Sugar-water solution 77.5

80.6 S altwater solution 75.3

Which of these statements best explains why the eggs that were soaked in sugar-water and saltwater solutions both decreased in mass?a. Because these eggs were placed in solutions that had higher concentrations of

dissolved materials than were inside the eggs, water diffused from inside the egg into the liquid.

c. Because these eggs were placed in solutions that had higher concentrations of dissolved materials than were inside the eggs, water diffused from the liquid into the egg.
