Objectives

• To understand what accessibility means• To understand how to make web pages accessible to

people with disabilities

All students will view a website from the persona of someone with a special needMost students will evaluate the effectiveness of websites based on people with different needsSome students will create a set of rules which all websites should adhere to.

Accessibility

• Where have you seen this term before?• Look closely at any major website and you will see a

section dedicated the accessibility• Accessibility means making the website accessible to the

most amount of people – making it easier to use for people with special needs or disability

• This can include people who are– Partially sighted– Colour blind– Have epilepsy– Of an older generation

• Todays lesson may have an effect on people with epilepsy.

This lesson

• You are each going to be given a persona of someone who may have an accessibility issue when using the internet.

• You are going to view 4 websites from these personas and analyse how they meet your needs

• You are then going to get into groups of people with different needs and summarise how successful these websites are overall.

The 4 Personas

• Colour-blindness• Blindness/Partial Sight• The Elderly• Epileptic

• This is an Ishihara Test

• Everyone should be able to read the number in the top right circle, ringed.

• People with colour blindness will struggle to read the other numbers

Colour Blindness

You are colour blind. You cannot distinguish between the colours red and green. All Greens, oranges, pale reds and browns appear to be the same colour to you. Your sight is not affected and you can see websites clearly.

Colour Blindness

• Around 1 in 12 men and 1 in 200 women are colour blind.

• Colour blindness affects different people in different ways. The most common type is red/green which involves the confusion of red and green colours.

Epilepsy

• Some people who have epilepsy have seizures which are triggered by flickering images or colours

• “This news item contains flash photography”

• Websites should not have flashing colours or animations

Partially sighted

• People who are partially sighted can still access the internet

• They might require– Bigger text/images– Magnification – Screen reader which reads the content of the website

aloud.

• They generally cannot read text below size 24, even when they wear glasses.

The elderly

• Many elderly people use the internet regularly.

• They may struggle with– Loud sounds– Bright/contrasting colours – Flashing images/colours– Small text and images

Task 1: Individually

• You will be given a persona and 4 websites to look at.

• Read your persona sheet making sure that you understand what your limitations and your needs are.

• Make notes on the back of your sheet for each website about how it does/doesn’t meet your needs.

Task 2:

• Get together in a group of 4 with people of differing personas.

• Complete the A3 sheet to summarize how well each website meets your overall needs.

• You must rank each website in order of how accessibly they are (1-4)
