Communities come in different shapes and sizes

• Traditionally Forums were your go to for community elements

• They still have their place but have often been superseded by more up to date social networks Other forums are

• Networks are made of people– What part do

Be part of the communities of the games that you play

• Companies often recruit from the people who give back

• Especially true of anything with an on-line aspect e.g. MMOS

Anything you can do to make yourself seen and heard by a company do

• Find the right groups for you

• Engage in discussions

• Even a Like can get you noticed / encourage others

Facebook Communities

• Increasingly groups on Facebook are used to organise all manner of things

• Ask subject specialists what group’s their members of

• Look for local event groups / hubs

• Think about your voice online

– Who do you interact with

– What do you promote

• Take some time to understand how a community works

• Don’t be afraid to join in discussions

• Play your part – it will pay off in the end

Communities usually require a buy in…

• They are multi way conversations

• Reddit users build karma through commenting & posting

• Tweeting and Interacting will gain you followers on twitter – as will following

• Don’t just be a lurker on forums

Physical Communities• Is there a hub or networking local to you?

If there isn’t anything nearby?

• Start something

– Find a Venue– Publicise the event• Facebook / Twitter / Forums etc

• Don’t give up if your first one is a massive success– Stay at it
