‘Comics at the speed of life’
So Why WebComics?• I’d just published a 10 year collection of my comics. It was time for
something new.
• I’m all about drawing comics fast. And life is short.
• I’d read a manifesto encouraging people to write stories.
• I wanted to share my experiences living in Cambodia to both Khmer and foreign friends.
• For fun! (I lost money doing my comic, so anyone who wants to become rich should leave now. )
365 Comics!
Jan 01 – December 31 2011. I simply ‘jumped in’.
Webcomics Tips
• Stick to a schedule. That builds your audience.• Use professional art tools, they save time• There is no ‘correct’ way to do a webcomic.
The most successful vary widely. • Friends, family, artist friends /art community
can be a big source of support.
• My own process:
Recommended Tools• Pen, pencil, eraser –
I use marker pens.– (many pros use
brush / nib pens)• Computer, Scanner
– scan for print AND web
• Art board / art paper
• Khmer-English dictionary
• Digital camera for reference
• Free web site
You can be as
detailed or simple
as you like. Your
comic, your rules
Whatever makes you happy, sad
or curious is a good start.
Web comics allow you to respond to current events in ‘real time’
One comment can make your day.
(Moderate your comments.)
Always be ready – stories are everywhere
Every day is a special day
Everybody loves a good
Motodop joke.
It’s always a struggle to balance
life and art.
You are a library of
stories – find your best
way to share them.
There are better topics than procrastination.
Drawing & sharing your
comic can take time. You may miss your friends.
I ended up creating two stories – unintentionally.
(‘Carrot and Potato’)
‘Apple and Pear’ Even when I’m being lazy, it’s easy to lapse into character-driven narrative.
Tricks: I use
templates,stamps
& Puppets
(OMG, is this cheating?)
Puppets – how real do you feel?
There are now several ‘Weeksito’ puppets out traveling the planet, an externalization of comics into the ‘real’ world.
