Rum River watershed finds both healthy & impaired watersSubmitted Article

The Minnesota Pollu-tion Control Agency(MPCA), with support fromlocal governmental units,collected water samplesfrom lakes and streams inthe Rum River Watershed in2013 and 2014. Accordingrecently-released results, 28lakes and numerous streamreaches (including MilleLacs Lake and the RumRiver) have good waterquality and meet state stan-dards. However, somelakes and streams that weresampled do not meet statestandards.

Lakes that exceed statestandards for nutrients in-clude: Rogers (AnokaCounty); Skogman, Fannie,Little Stanchfield, Long,Francis, Tennyson, Baxter,Green, North and SouthStanchfield (Isanti County);Twelve (Morrison County);West Hunter and EastHunter (Sherburne County).The nutrient of concern,phosphorus, causes exces-sive algae blooms.

Streams showing highlevels of E. coli bacteria in-clude: West Branch of theRum River, Cedar Creek(near Andover), SeelyeBrook, Bogus Brook andEstes Brook. This bacteriais an indicator of organismsthat may pose a risk to con-tact with the water.

Some streams do nothave enough oxygen to sup-port fish and other aquaticlife and/or have too muchsuspended sediment. Thesestreams include TrottBrook, Borden Creek,Cedar Creek (Little River),Malone Creek (ThainsCreek) and Crooked Brook.

Some streams are fail-ing to support healthy pop-ulations of fish and/ormacroinvertebrates, andfurther study is occurring todetermine the reason.These streams include EstesBrook, Isanti Brook, Ma-honey Brook, StanchfieldCreek, Tibbetts Brook, TrottBrook, Vondell Brook, theWest Branch of the RumRiver, Unnamed Creek

(headwaters to the W.Branch of the Rum R. inMorrison County), andWashburn Brook.

Studies, called TotalMaximum Daily Load(TMDL), are underway foreach impaired water to de-termine the amount of pol-lutant reduction needed tomeet state water qualitystandards.

Other streams andlakes that were monitoredare in good condition. Forthese, including the mainstem of the Rum River, thefocus of management willbe to maintain these goodconditions. Several, such asLake George and CedarCreek in Anoka County areconsidered especially im-portant for protection be-cause of declining waterquality trends and/or fore-casted land use changes.

A public meeting willbe held to discuss these re-sults at the Isanti CountyGovernment Center, onThursday, October 1, 2015,at 7:00 p.m. Attendees willhear more detail and will beasked to share their personalknowledge about theselakes and streams, whichmay help inform and shapefuture management.MPCA and local govern-ment representatives will bepresent.

The restoration andprotection plans for arealakes and streams, once fi-nalized in early summer2016, will be used by coun-ties, soil and water conser-vation districts, lake groupsand others. Having thesemanagement plans will alsohelp locals compete forstate grants.
