The Institute’s mission is to advance the study of modern East Asia through academic research, public programs, and funding for the study of East Asia.
Institute faculty represent the many academic departments at Columbia engaged in the study of modern East Asia.
The Institute is not an academic department, but a regional institute established in 1949.

Funds summer projects focused on politics, economy, business, international and public affairs, law, society, and media in modern East Asia are eligible Eligibility All CU Graduate Students—M.A. and Ph.D.
Priority will be given to students for research or secured internships in Southeast Asia, and to students who wish to use their research or internship to expand their expertise beyond their main country of interest.

business, international and public affairs, law, society, and media in modern East and Southeast Asia
Completing coursework, pursuing dissertation research, or in the dissertation write-up phase
Priority will be given to students whose research focuses on Southeast Asia and on regional or cross-national issues in East Asia

Weatherhead Ph.D. Training Grant
Purpose Funds summer projects focused on East Asia or Southeast Asia
Eligibility Ph.D. students projects that develop academic and/or professional expertise that
cross traditional disciplinary, geographic, or temporal boundaries, and/or combines regional and functional expertise.
examples of projects include summer acquisition of a second language, research trips, and unpaid internships in the region.
Provides Up to $4,000 Approximately 20 awards per summer

Weatherhead Ph.D. Training Grant
Preference given to applicants whose projects: Take them to East Asia or Southeast Asia Assist in the development of a student's dissertation
through field or archival work or the acquisition of new skills
Are undertaken during the first and second years of a student's matriculation at Columbia, and up to the third year for students entering without a masters degree.
