October proves a banner month for equity markets

After a tumultuous summer, the markets seemed to downplay worries in October about China’s economic slowdown and uncertainty over the Federal Reserve timing for raising short-term interest rates. In fact, it was a banner month for the major equity indices whose positive performance made up for last quarter’s losses, giving the S&P 500 its biggest monthly gain in four years. The global MSCI EAFE index rallied, too, ending the month up 7.7%.

Mixed economic data and political news added some uncertainty inOctober, though investors clearly took these factors in stride. The stronger dollar and softer global economy may also have a bigger impact on the U.S. economy than was expected. The markets did welcome a tentative agreement between Congress and the White House on a two-year budget deal, which would also suspend the debt ceiling until March 2017.

Raymond James strategists have noted that last quarter’s volatility closely mirrors the price actions we experienced back in 2011. The correlation, according to Andrew Adams, CMT, of the Raymond James Investment Strategy team, is pretty remarkable and, if it holds, may indicate another brief downturn before rallying into the end of the year. Raymond James Chief Investment Strategist Jeff Saut believes the best move for investors is to take a wait-and-see approach. He’s holding out hope that the equity markets are in the process of forming a bottom. Since the jury is still out, his team suggests erring on the side of caution for now.

Meanwhile, China and other emerging markets are still facing a challenging economic environment. China’s transition from an export-led economy to one driven by domestic demand could be uneven, and growth is likely to be slower that what we’ve seen over the past couple of decades. Chief Economist Scott Brown believes the direct impact on the U.S. economy should be small since China accounts for less than 8% of U.S. exports (less than 1% of GDP). However, he notes that the countries that sell into China, including many of the commodity-producing nations, will have a tougher time – so the global economy is likely to be slower. On a positive note, U.S. consumers should continue to benefit from low prices on oil and other commodities.

Here are ten quick tips, courtesy of Amy Florian with Coregenius*, that you can do for someone you know that is seriously ill.

1. Ask for dietary restrictions and preferences. Deliver meals in disposable containers to heat up as needed. 2. Send a quick email, text, letter, card, or voice message to say you’re thinking of them and you care.

3. Offer practical help - a ride to appointments, everyday tasks like laundry, cleaning or yard work.4. If there are children, offer to babysit, transport to and/or from an activity, or take them for ice cream.5. Offer to help in setting up a Caring Bridge web site (www.caringbridge.com) to update family and friends on their condition.6. If there is a prolonged hospitalization, buy a monthly parking pass for family members. Add a care package for the hospital room with snacks and activity books that can help family pass the time. 7. Send a text the next time you’re out and about to see if they’d like you to pick anything up for them. 8. Pay for a massage at a spa or for a mobile masseuse who goes to the home or hospital. For a woman, perhaps include a beauty treatment - manicure/pedicure, facial, makeup application, etc. 9. Offer to visit in the house, or to take them out for a coffee, a lunch date, or a movie (either at the theater or bringing in a rental). 10. Give gifts they can use, such as a comfortable throw blanket for use in the hospital or at home, a package of thank-you cards with a nice pen, or a gift card for a cup of coffee.

So many people avoid someone who is seriously ill, which only makes it worse.

Be there. Make a difference. You will never regret it!

How Can You Help a Loved One Who is Seriously Ill?

based on the rates recommended by the American Council on Gift Annuities, annually for life.• Pooled Income Fund - Allows clients to fulfill their desires for charitable giving, and at the same time provides them with a

continued stream of investment income for life.• Charity Advised Account - Gives 501(c)(3) non-profit organizations a vehicle for the long-term investment of endowment

funds without requiring the organization to establish its own foundation or supporting organization.

MIND diet rich in vegetables, berries, whole grains, nutsBy Nancy Di Fiore

Newly published research suggests that a specific diet called the MIND diet may reduce the incidence of brain disease that increases a person’s risk in developing Alzheimer’s disease.

The recent study shows that the MIND diet lowered the risk of Alzheimer’s by as much as 53 percent in participants who adhered to the diet rigorously, and by about 35 percent in those who followed it moderately well according to a paper published online on March 19 in the journal

Blueberries are ‘potent’Berries are the only fruit specifically included in the MIND diet. “Blueberries are one of the more potent foods in terms of protecting the brain,” Morris said, and strawberries have also performed well in past studies of the effect of food on cognitive function.

“One of the more exciting things about this is that people who adhered even moderately to the MIND diet had a reduction in their risk for AD,” said Morris. “I think that will motivate people.”adhered even moderately to the MIND diet had a reduction in their risk for AD,” said Morris. “I think that will motivate people.”

Alzheimer’s & Dementia: The Journal of the Alzheimer’s Association.

Developed by Martha Clare Morris, PhD, a Rush nutritional epidemiologist and her colleagues, the MIND diet is a hybrid of the Mediterranean and DASH (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension) diets. Both diets have been found to reduce the risk of cardiovascular conditions, like hypertension, heart attack and stroke. Some researchers have found that the two older diets provide protection against dementia as well.

The MIND diet is also easier to follow than, say, the Mediterraneandiet, which calls for daily consumption

Morris and her colleagues developed the MIND diet based on information that has accrued from years’ worth of past research about what foods and nutri-ents have good, and bad, effects on the functioning of the brain over time. This is the first study to relate the MIND diet to Alzheimer’s disease.

Alzheimer’s disease, which takes a toll on cognitive function, is not unlike heart disease in that there appear to be “many factors that play into who gets the disease,” tincluding behavioral, environmental and genetic components, Morris said.

With late-onset AD, with the older group of people, genetic “risk factors are

of fish and three to four daily servings of each of fruits and vegetables, Morris said.

What’s brain-healthy, what’s not?The MIND diet has 15 dietary components, including 10 “brain-healthy food groups”:• Green leafy vegetables • Whole grains• Other vegetables • Fish• Nuts • Poultry• Berries • Olive oil• Beans • Wine

The five unhealthy groups are: • Red meats• Butter and stick margarine• Cheese• Pastries and sweets• Fried or fast food

The MIND diet includes at least three servings of whole grains, a salad and one other vegetable every day — along with a glass of wine. It also involves snacking most days on nuts and eating beans every other day or so, poultry and berries at least twice a week and fish at least once a week. Dieters must limit eating the designated unhealthy foods, especially butter (less than 1 tablespoon a day), cheese, and fried or fast food (less than a serving a week for any of the three), to have a real shot at avoiding the devastating effects of Alzheimer’s, according to the study.

a small piece of the picture,” she said. Past studies have yielded evidence that suggests that what we eat may play a significant role in determining who gets AD and who doesn’t,” Morris said.

When the researchers in the new study left out of the analyses those participants who changed their diets somewhere along the line — say, on a doctor’s orders after a stroke — they found that “the association became stronger between the MIND diet and (favorable) outcomes” in terms of Alzheimer’s disease, Morris said. “That probably means that people who eat this diet consistently over the years get the best protection.”

In other words, it looks like the longer a person eats the MIND diet, the less risk that person will have of developing Alzheimer’s, Morris said. As is the case with many health-related habits, including physical exercise, she said, “You’ll be healthier if you’ve been doing the right thing for a long time.”

The study was funded by the National Institute on Aging. All the researchers on this study were from Rush except for Frank M. Sacks MD, professor of cardiovascular disease prevention, Department of Nutrition, at the Harvard School of Public Health. Sacks chaired the committee that developed the DASH diet.
