ANNOUNCING AN UPCOMING RETROUVAILLE WEEKEND FOR COUPLES

FEBRUARY 2, 2018 — ST. LOUIS, MO

In marriage, communication is more than just talking.

At some point, did you stop sharing about the things that were important to you? Did your spouse?

Improving a marriage takes time and a conscious ef-fort to learn about your spouse. Growing closer in a marriage does not happen automatically. Retrouvaille

is a marriage program dedicated to helping couples grow closer and develop a stronger bond. You give your heart and soul to everything you do, between your work and your family. Are you giving your heart and soul to your marriage? Sometimes the distance between a husband and a wife can seem so wide that it cannot be repaired. Retrouvaille is a marriage progam designed to bring couples closer together.

US Bishops File Brief to Support Little Sisters of the Poor at Supreme Court By Editor, Catholic News Service, January 13, 2018

(ZENIT) The General Counsel of the U.S. Con-

ference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) filed a

brief amicus curiae, January 8, in the Zubik v.

Burwell case now before the U.S. Supreme Court

on the question of the contraceptive mandate of

the U.S. Department of Health and Human Ser-

vices. The brief argues that the government man-

date that faith-based organizations facilitate pay-

ments for contraceptives and sterilization for their

employees damages not only religious freedom,

but society as a whole.

“If the petitioners abide by their religious be-

liefs, they face the loss of the ability to sponsor

health coverage for their employees and millions of dollars in fines, threatening financial ruin. No one

benefits from such an outcome—not the organizations, their donors, their clients, or their employees,”

wrote Anthony R. Picarello, Jeffrey Hunter Moon, Michael F. Moses and Hillary E. Byrnes of

USCCB’s Office of General Counsel.

The brief also highlights the major contribution to the public good made by Catholic and other

religious charities and social services, assisting millions of people every year. The brief was filed on

behalf of USCCB and seven other Catholic and non-Catholic organizations: Association of Catholic

Colleges and Universities; Catholic Relief Services; Family Research Council; Institutional Religious

Freedom Alliance; The Cardinal Newman Society; Thomas More Society; and World Vision, Inc.

(Vatican City) In an interview published Thursday, Cardinal Pietro Parolin said that for the Vatican, the new year will be marked by its atten-tion to the lives of young people ahead of the 2018 Synod of Bishops. “This year – the year 2018 – will be characterized by a special concentration of the Church’s at-tention at all levels on the young, then on their expectations, their aspira-tions, the challenges they face and also on the hopes that they bring with them, as on their weaknesses and fears.” This approach searches “for a new relationship between the Church and young people, based on a paradigm of responsibility exempt from any pater-nalism,” said Secretary of State Cardi-nal Pietro Parolin, in a new interview with Vatican News (formerly called Vatican Radio). Published Jan. 11, the interview covered the topic of the upcoming Synod of Bishops on Youth, Vocation and Discernment, which will take

place in October 2018, as well as the World Meeting of Families in Au-gust, Amoris laetitia, reform of the Curia, and the Pope’s imminent trip to Chile and Peru. About the Synod on Youth, Pa-rolin noted the Church’s strong desire to enter into a dialogue with young people that goes both ways. He referred to the famous line by John F. Kennedy that says, “Ask not what your country can do for you – ask what you can do for your coun-try,” explaining that they want to not only help youth, but invite them to contribute to the Church and to the evangelization of the Gospel.

Youth to be Vatican’s focus in 2018, Cardinal Parolin says By Editor, Catholic News Service, January 11, 2018

“I believe that at this invitation young people will be able to respond with their generosity and also with their enthusiasm,” he said. About the Pope’s immanent trip to Chile and Peru, which begins Jan. 15, Parolin said that, as usual, Francis goes as a pastor to meet the local church, which in the two countries is particularly vibrant. On the other hand, Chile and Peru also face many challenges, one of which is the difficulties experienced by the indigenous people of the Ama-zon, one of the reasons Francis has called for a Synod on the Pan-Amazon area to take place in 2019. Another event happening this year is the World Meeting of Families in Dublin, which Parolin said he believes will be an important stage “of reflec-tion… of deepening” in the discus-sions surrounding the controversial encyclical. The document arose, according to Parolin, from a “new paradigm,” one that Pope Francis is carrying out with “wisdom, with prudence and also with patience,” and which calls for a new attitude, spirit and approach. Amoris laetitia is the Church’s “embrace” of the family and its prob-lems, especially those encountered in the world today. It is also “a request to help families to collaborate and con-tribute to the growth of the Church,” he said. The cardinal also spoke about the Pope’s reform of the Roman Curia, which he emphasized is less about the structural reform through new laws, regulations, etc., but conversion. “So, to ensure that the Curia – ever more and always better, taking away even those shadows that can hinder this commitment and this mission – can really become an aid to the Pope to proclaim the Gospel, to witness the Gospel, to evangelize the world of today,” he said.

Question of the Week Second Sunday - John 1:35-42

Key Passage: …The two disciples…followed Jesus. Jesus turned and saw them following him and said to them, “What are you looking for?”

Question for adults: What are your looking for? Where and how do you expect to find it?

Question for children: Why might Jesus choose you to be one of his helpers?
