COLLEGE FOR KIDSSWIM LESSONS

Parent and Child Swim (Age 6 months-3 years) Designed to give young children a head start on swimming, to get comfortable in the water and begin to work on basic skills while interacting with instructor and other children in a fun and safe environment. Parents and children learn together to increase a child’s comfort level in the water and build a foundation of basic skills, such as arm and leg movements and breath control. Lessons are fun-filled and help introduce water safety concepts, encouraging a healthy recreational habit that your entire family can enjoy. Wear a bathing suit and have children wear water diapers if needed. (8 meetings)

Adult (Age 16+) American Red Cross Adult Swim is intended for adults who wish to improve their knowledge and skill. It may be to overcome their fear of the water, learn basic skills and achieve a minimum level of water competency, improve their skill and technique, or perhaps even to compete in triathlons or join a masters’ team. Children are not permitted in the gym/pool area. (8 meetings)

Private Swim LessonsImprove or master your swimming skills with individualized attention. Instructors, participants and/or parents work together to determine goals for the session and lessons are then customized in order to meet the established goals. Private lessons are great for beginners, people with disabilities, people who have had a negative experience with water or for those who want to improve their skills in a private 1-1 setting. All swim lessons are based on the American Red Cross Swim Lesson Program, which offers classes for all ages and levels. There are no ages listed with the levels, as each swimmer is different and we encourage all swimmers to develop their skills at their own pace and comfort. Some swimmers will require more training in basic skills while other swimmers are ready to learn more advanced skills. All lessons are held at the indoor pool. Children five and under must be accompanied by parents. Students should bring a towel and wear a swimsuit. Ladies must wear a one-piece or tankini (no midriff showing), males must wear swim shorts (no speedos). Yair Colon and Dusty Davis are certified water safety instructors.

If you need assistance selecting the appropriate level please sign up for a free 10-minute Swim Evaluation slot between 10:30 am-12:30 pm on Saturday May 5 by calling 254-526-1586. In this evaluation, certified water safety instructors will evaluate the child’s ability and recommend an instructional level for registration.

Parent and Child Yoga (Age 1-3)

Partner with your toddler in simple animated poses, games, books and breathing exercises that help benefit the mental and physical health of children. We’ll bark in downward dog, hiss in cobra pose and flutter our wings in butterfly, while we take a yoga journey your child will love. This fun class provides key bonding methods between parent and child, helps with cognitive skills, language development, attention and coordination all while strengthening their growing muscles. AppInventor Coding Camp for Girls (Age 13-18)

Computer scientists and computer engineers are the second largest STEM occupational group, but only one in seven of these are female. This course targets female computer scientists and computer engineers-to-be and starts at the very beginning--setting up an app. With these lessons, students will go step-by-step through building progressively more complex apps. Girls will code many types of apps while learning programming concepts and terminology. After taking this course, students will be prepared to participate in the Technovation Program hosted by Early College High School (KISD) in the fall, which offers girls around the world the opportunity to learn the skills they need to emerge as tech entrepreneurs and leaders. Each student will receive a free novel and access to online learning resources. Create an eye-catching website and web application for all to enjoy using modern techniques of front- end web development including HTML5, CSS3, JavaScript and Git. Microscope (Age 10-17) The scanning electron microscope (SEM) uses a focused beam of high-energy electrons to generate a variety of signals at the surface of solid specimens. Forensic Detectives (Age 9-15)

A mysterious crime, an unidentified victim and no suspects….but wait! Whose footprint is this? Could that piece of fabric be a clue? Learn the scientific techniques used to investigate crimes. Examine a scene for clues on how the crime was committed and learn ways to identify the victim and possible suspects. Collect samples from a mock crime scene for examination and chemical analysis, explore the intricacies of fingerprinting and be introduced to the science of genetics and DNA forensics. Using the scientific method and deductive reasoning, evaluate motive and opportunity and ultimately, help to solve the big crime. Wear closed-toe shoes and comfortable clothes you can get messy. You Rock! Fossil Hunting in Central Texas (Age 5+)

Discover the fun of fossil hunting in central Texas. Students will get an overview of the fossilization process and the environments in which fossils are made. Learn how to find and identify fossils for your own collection during a walking field trip (on campus). Each student will create their own 3D layered fossil landform. Included is a show at the Mayborn Science Theater on Wednesday. Parents will need to pick students up on this day. Wear appropriate clothing and sunscreen. Bring bottled water for the field trip. Geocaching (Parent & Child)

X marks the spot! Geocaching is a real-world, outdoor treasure hunting game using GPS-enabled devices. Participants navigate to a specific set of GPS coordinates and then attempt to find the geocache (container) hidden at that location. We’ll go over the criteria for caches as well as the rules for placing and finding them—then show you how to log the ones you find. Child must register with an adult. Get a complete briefing on aviation careers, history, oddities and an introduction to student pilot training. Class meets in a classroom Monday through Thursday and ends on Friday with an actual airplane flight at Skylark Field. Group Beginning Guitar (Age 8-14)

This group guitar class is for beginners who have little or no guitar experience. The course covers the foundational elements of recreational guitar playing. Students will be introduced to basic chords for self-accompaniment, elements of music notation (including the reading of rhythm, melody and chord shorthand), major scales and blues scales. Both finger-style and plectrum (flat pick) techniques will be introduced. Repertoire will be selected from a variety of genres including folk, blues, rock, pop and jazz (student input for repertoire selection is encouraged.) Students must bring their own guitar to class and for at-home practice (either acoustic or electric – amplification is not needed for electric guitars). Strummin’ & Drummin’ (Age 7-12)

Join in an exciting music, movement, drumming, and strumming class where children integrate and assimilate rhythm and melody into their lives by using ukuleles and the West African Djembe drum. In recent years “ukes” have gained popularity, particularly in schools, as a great instrument to help develop kid’s musical abilities. One of the great things about djembe drums is that the rhythms layer simple beats with complex timing, solo phrases and improvisation. Neither of these instruments is difficult to learn, and both are super FUN! No matter what your level of skill and experience are, there is a place for you in the groove. Students will learn instrument history, parts of the instrument, proper playing techniques, and will be able to play a simple song by the end of class. We might even add a little bit of hummin’ to go along with our strummin’ and drummin’! Instruments are provided. Join other scholastic chess players for a chess experience you won’t forget. Our daily program features a balance of fun and formal chess instruction plus friendly competition. Learn various advanced chess strategies necessary to compete at any level. Basic Aid Training (Age 6-12)

Basic Aid Training (BAT) introduces children to safety information and first aid procedures for a variety of situations with emphasis on safety, recognizing an emergency, getting help and caring for a victim. Students will be equipped with the knowledge and skills necessary to know how to check and help someone who is choking, perform hands-only CPR, identify household poisons, how to prevent poisoning and how to treat minor first-aid injuries. Students will receive a certificate of training from First Aid 4-U at the end of class.
