α 12-carbon Eastman ester/alcohol
You may call it 2,2,4-trimethyl-l,3-pentanediol mono-isobutyrate if you don't especially like brand names. No hard feelings. It's 15^/lb. in tanks. Texanol is a useful molecule as well as an inexpensive one, what with bulky pendant groups and a nicely reactive —OH. We make three plasticizers from it: the iso-butyrate, the adipate, and another that bears the designation "Texanol A-S" because of its superlative anti-stain properties when used in vinyl tile. You can make lots more things from it. Other plasticizers, pharmaceuticals, pesticides, resins for protective coatings are some natural candidates. Take a look at some of the properties of Texanol listed below. If they interest you, write us or get in touch with your Eastman representative for working samples and information.
