WOMEN’ RETREAT—GREEK WORDS TO LIVE BY

The Lake Mills Moravian Women invite you to come for a weekend of fellowship, laughter and reflec-tion to shape who we are with God and one another.

Guest Speaker: THE REV. DR. AMY GOHDES-LUHMAN

Location: Mt. Morris Camp & Conference Center September 20-22, 2019

Amy’s topic for the weekend will focus on 3 Greek words that we can live by, Eleos, Chara & Splagchnizomai; mercy, compassion & joy. She will explore these concepts as they are described in the Bible, share stories of how these concepts play out in her life & invite you to share how you have experienced mercy, compassion & joy in your life thus far. Collectively we will allow these biblical concepts to encourage us & challenge us as sisters in Christ Jesus.

Invite a family member or friend, all are welcome!

Please contact the Church Office or Moravian Women’s group for more details.

The SOLD Seminar

Many years ago Bishop Graf developed a program called the SOLD Seminar (Stewardship of Living and Dying). The purpose was to offer to our church family information and discussion which enables us to be better stewards of planning for the future so that, when the end comes, individuals have taken care of those critical decisions that we all face. This was well attended in the past and many folks were able to make plans that served them and their families very effectively.

Our Board of Elders will be offering an updated version of the SOLD Seminar on Tuesdays, Novem-ber 5, 12 and 19 from 6:30 to 7:30 pm. These three session will include:

Session 1: Jonathan Meacham from Forbes Funeral home will discuss the process of planning, work-ing with a funeral home, options for cremation and burial and ways to budget for those expenses.

Session 2: Lauren Daoust and Patti Fehl will provide the paperwork and explain the importance of Power of Attorney for Health Care (anyone over age 18 should have one) and a Living Will (to be completed by anyone with a serious illness or advanced age).

Session 3: Pastor Matt will walk through the process of planning a memorial service and our Mora-vian traditions of serving those who are grieving.

Regardless of your age these are important conversations to have for ourselves and our loved ones. Please contact the church office if you are interested in attending. Sign up form coming out soon!

Dear Friends, I am writing to thank the elders and the congregation for the moving recognition of my missionary service during worship August 4th. I am grateful that you thought highly enough of the work in Honduras to highlight that ministry during worship and to host a brunch in honor of Barbara and me. To a congregation that five years ago commissioned me for missionary work, raised money to support the Honduras mission during my time there, sent work crews to help out in Ahuas and most recently even purchased a new kitchen range for my house in Ahuas, your decision to celebrate was not a total surprise for me. Still, I am humbled, grateful and happy that the Sturgeon Bay Moravian Church chose to set aside a worship service to recognize what Barbara and I have done. As I have said to you and many others, it is important to support the mission rather than the missionary. I do not deserve any special recognition for answering what I still perceive to be a divine call to serve in Ahuas. As I plan to coordinate 2020 Honduras work crews, I am also anxious to see what service opportunities the Lord has for my future. In the meantime, I look forward to reestablishing relationships with individuals in the Sturgeon Bay Moravian Church as together we support many ministries, including the 73 year old Honduran Moravian Medical Work. Thank you! Blessings, Rick Nelson

The Women’s Monday morning Bible study will begin again this fall, September 9th at 8:00 am. Have you ever wondered how the Christian Church ended up with so many denominations? Have you wondered why or how some doctrines or traditions came to be? This year the wom-en will be studying “The History of Christiani-ty.” We will begin this year with the Refor-mation. Please join us as we search for some of the answers to these kinds of questions. The group meets every Monday morning from 8:00 to 8:30 am. Pastor Reeder leads.

Women’s Bible Study:

Tuesday mornings at 7:30 am.

The Men’s Tuesday morning Bible group has been studying Numbers and Deuteronomy this summer and will begin a new study (yet to be determined) on September 3rd.

The group meets from 7:30 to 8:00 am each Tuesday. New members are always welcome. Stop by on your way to work for coffee and a donut and interesting discussion. Pastor Reeder leads.

Men’s Bible Study:

First Communion Workshop:

On Sunday, September 15 we will be offering our First Communion Workshop. This class is for children who have indicated that they wish to join in the sacrament of the Lord’s Table. It is a requirement of our congregation that our children take this class in order to begin taking communion. We also ask that at least one parent or an adult who is involved in the spiritual formation of the child attend as well. The class will last for about an hour. Please contact the church office if you wish to attend.

MORAVIAN JUSTICE MINISTRY CONFERENCE: “The Two Feet of Justice Series # 2 HOW CAN I BE A NEIGHBOR?

October 25 - 27, 2019

How Can I Be a Neighbor? Friday, October 25th through Sunday, October 27th is an opportunity to take another step for justice! One foot is direct service ministries in providing food, shelter, and other basic needs. The second foot, which is our focus for this weekend, moves us beyond charity to justice through advocacy and prophetic ministries that call for equitable and liberating change. Learn more about issues like housing justice, racial equity, economic justice, and the civil rights of immigrants. Attend strategy sessions to help develop these ministries in your own communities. October 25 - 27 at The Friends Conference and Retreat Center, Annandale, MN. Cost is $150 per person. Register online or contact Pastor Marian at 920-499-4433 and at [email protected]

Discovering Islam Course - Sept. 12 to Oct. 17

We are pleased to announce that Rev. Mary Lou Plummer will be leading a course this fall called Discovering Islam. Over six sessions through videos and discussion, the topics will include:

Islam: Faith and History,

Islam: An American Faith,

Women in Islam,

African Americans and Islam,

Islam: A Faith Hijacked and

Christians and Islam

We are excited about this opportunity to help educate and challenge many of the misconceptions we may have about the Islamic faith as we discover a greater understanding of one of the major religions of our world. The classes will be on Thursday mornings from 9:00 am. until 10:30 am. beginning on September 12 and running through October 17. Please contact the church office if you are interested in signing up.

Being a Paragraph 29 Moravian

Our Board of Elders has decided over the next year we, as a congregation, will be digging into the foundational agreement that formed the renewed Moravian Church in 1727, “The Moravian Covenant for Christian Living”. In a time when we see a lack of civility, a rise in distrust, hate and an inability for folks to work together for the common good, we need to turn to the foundations of our faith and be mindful of our Christian Witness. The center piece of this ministry focus for the coming year is Para-graph 29 of the Covenant. We will be looking at this to-gether as we have with other ministry themes in the past through study groups, worship, mission and outreach.
