TODAY’S READINGS & REFLECTION First Reading — David found Saul in a deep sleep, but would not harm him (1 Samuel 26:2, 7-9, 12-13, 22-23). Psalm — The Lord is kind and merciful (Psalm 103). Second Reading — We shall bear the image of the heavenly Adam (1 Corinthians 15:45-49). Gospel — Give to everyone who asks of you. Lend expecting nothing back (Luke 6:27-38). The English translation of the Psalm Responses from Lectionary for Mass © 1969, 1981, 1997, International Commission on English in the Liturgy Corporation. All rights reserved.

DO NO HARM We listen quite a while before we get to the “punch line” of the first reading today: even though it would be an easy thing to do, David will not harm the anointed one of the Lord. We, of course, know that Jesus is the Messiah, the anointed one of God, but the Bible uses this term for many different people. It is scripture’s way of indicating who has been chosen by God for a special place and mission in salvation history. In today’s Gospel, Jesus presents a greatly enlarged list of those who, as children of God, we should not harm, but love instead: our enemies, those who curse us or do us harm, those who owe us money, the ungrateful, the wicked. The point of Jesus’ teaching is not to encourage these kinds of behaviors in others, but rather to form us in the image of our heavenly Father by increasing our opportunities to love unconditionally, expecting no return; to be merciful and forgiving, even when it would be easier not to.

Weekly Offering Report for the Week

We are a Tithing Community following God’s Plan for Giving. The key to understanding how God wants us to give to the Church is found in 1 Corinthians 16:2, “On the first day of the week [Sunday] each of you should set aside whatever you can af-

ford,” In return for the Lord’s generosity. In the last week our people returned to his Church the Following:

Weekly Offering Report for February 17, 2019 First Collection: $2,699.–

Children: $124.- Second Collection: $919.-

“Our weekly offering is one way of saying: we belong to the Lord… and one another. What Does YOUR weekly offering Say? Pray for His guidance THEN renew your commitment to Tithing”.

From the Desk of the Pastor… Dear Sisters and Brothers in The Lord: “Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you. To the person who strikes you on one cheek, offer the other one as well, and from the person who takes your cloak, do not withhold even your tunic. Give to everyone who asks of you, and from the one who takes what is yours do not demand it back.” What a great challenge! - and to think that these precepts come from the very Heart of Jesus ... They do not allow for interpretation, nor involved explanations to justify something of opposite meaning to the Lord’s exhortations. All is very clear - they in no way diminish one’s dignity, they do not ask us to be cowardly, they do not lead to self-love. When one lives according to the spirit of the Beatitudes, the Lord’s Prayer is put into practice and the works of mercy will never be misunderstood, nor will they be confused with subservience; rather they proclaim the radical message of the Gospel. This is a 'skill’ that only men and women of God can experience; will we be among them? By reviewing our lives, we will know the answer. Today Msgr. Joseph Grimaldi, Episcopal Vicar for Brooklyn, is celebrating Mass with the Igbo community commemorating the Flight of the Holy Family into Egypt. Over the years, this ceremony has become a strong expression of faith and culture of our African brothers and sisters. It is indicative of the richness of the ethnic groups that the Diocese of Brooklyn and Queens enjoys, and in fact our Parish of Santa Fortunata. We wholeheartedly welcome Monsignor Grimaldi. We continue to appeal to our many parishioners who made pledges to both the Annual Catholic Appeal and Generations of Faith; success depends on each individual response. Blessed are they who fulfill their commitment. Our gratitude to all of you. We pray for our Church, for our priests and for the whole world that the Divine Mercy of God will guide our steps on paths of new and better times with the strength of God. Blessings, Father José Francisco Herrera, Your servant

Bendiciones, P. José Francisco Herrera Su servidor
