INTRO — HELLO THERE

That’s why the Continuing Studies program at Kendall College of Art and Design of Ferris State University (KCAD) is rolling out a new lineup of courses this winter, designed to inspire people of all ages toward personal growth and discovery.

Adults can learn how to communicate through the language of type, color, and space in the new Intro to Graphic Design (p. 14) course, develop technical artistic skills and a disciplined creative process in the new Painting Boot Camp (p. 10) course, or get up-close-and-personal with the intricate beauty of our world in the new Macro Photography: Selecting and Photographing Your Subject (p. 11).

Children ages 6-9 can indulge their love of nature while grasping the basics of perspective drawing in the new 3D Creatures from the Sea (p. 19) course.

10-12-year-olds can delve into the world of manga with the new Characters from the Yu-Gi-Oh! Universe (p. 21) course. And for the 13-17-year-olds, the new T-Shirt Art Day Camp (p. 27) combines art and fashion into a memorable creative experience.

METAL JEWELRY CARVING AND CASTING

Learn the lost wax casting process from start to finish, including wax carving, spruing, investing, and finally pouring molten metal. Students will also learn the finishing techniques necessary to complete their own unique jewelry or small sculptural pieces in precious metal. Beginning to advanced students are welcome. STAR IN YOUR OWN TV SHOW

Do you have an idea for a TV show? Are you interested in writing, directing, acting, editing, and shooting video? This class will cover all of this and more as you make the pilot episode for your own TV show. It might be funny, spooky, sad, or surreal, but it will be all your own creation. You will learn how to storyboard camera shots, write a script, and take turns being a camera operator, director, and actor. Edit your video using iMovie, and take home a file to share with friends. YOUNG ARCHITECTS

Step up to the drafting table and try your hand at being an architect. Learn about skyscrapers, famous architects, and sustainable design. Plan a model house on your own that you’ll build from the ground up! You will draw, paint, and work with blocks, cardboard, and clay to create a model of your building design. Instructor: Marie Couretas





ARCHITECTURE

Come explore the ins and outs of architecture. This course will teach you the process of how a building is created from the design stage through the finished construction phase. We will look at many different ways to communicate design through models, computer based programs like AutoCAD, and SketchUp, and hand drawing. No experience is needed, only a love of architecture. Learn how to hold and operate your automatic or SLR camera, including important menu functions, composing and staging photos, artificial and natural lighting. HOW TO MANGA I AND II

Learn the ins and outs of character design and illustration in the distinctive style of Japanese animation and Manga. You will study the methods and techniques of figure drawing and creating expressive characters while discovering the rich history of this eastern art form and its many styles. MASTER STUDIES: SKETCHING AT THE GRAM

Investigate sketching with charcoal, and pencils, spending some of your time inside the Grand Rapids Art Museum using the works inside as subjects. You will acquire skills and learn about the problems of translating and representing a master work within our sketchbook. There will be discussions on the work done. STEPHEN ALLIE is adjunct faculty at KCAD, and runs his own graphic design business.

NATALIE BUDNICK, B.F.A. in Digital Media, KCAD, is a freelance designer and digital artist passionate about concept art and fantasy illustration.

DIANNE CARROLL BURDICK, B.F.A., Western Michigan University, has been a photographer for many publications and maintains her own studio. She has participated in local and national exhibitions and has been the recipient of numerous awards.

KATHRYN CARDENAS, a student in KCAD’s M.F.A. Painting program teaches classical painting, drawing, and mixed media to adults and youth.

COURTNEY COLE, B.A. in Painting, Western Michigan University, has been working in the fashion industry for 20 years in the areas of textile/print design, color and trend, in such companies as White House Black Market, Kohl’s, Forever 21, and Abercrombie and Fitch. She is currently pursuing a Master of Science in Apparel Product Development & Technology at Central Michigan University.

DENISE COOK loves cooking, sewing, photography, and travel. She is an accomplished seamstress with extensive experience in project and quilt making. For the last 8 years, Denise has been working as a food, sewing, and travel writer for lifestyle magazines and blogs. She has over twenty years experience of teaching English, Mandarin, and culinary skills to students of all ages across the globe.

MARIE M. COURETAS graduated from KCAD in 2009 with a B.F.A. and State of Michigan K-12 (LQ) teaching certification. In 2015 Marie completed her Post-Baccalaureate Studio Art program at Studio Arts College International in Florence, Italy. She is currently teaching part-time at two schools in Grand Rapids, MI and also works as a freelance artist and photographer.

MARVIN DABIDEEN, M.F.A. Painting, KCAD, is a freelance artist who exhibits his work regionally.

MICHAEL DOLLAR is a faculty member in the Digital Art and Design program at KCAD.

MATTHEW FARRELL holds a B.F.A. from Colorado Mesa University, and M.F.A. in Printmaking from KCAD. He exhibits his work locally and nationaly and is a frequent Continuing Studies instructor.

ELIZA FERNAND, a graduate of Interlochen Center for the Arts, received her B.F.A. from Pacific Northwest College of Art. Her work has been shown widely across the country, most notably at Kathryn Markel Fine Arts, New York, NY; College of Western Idaho, Nampa, ID; 65 GRAND, Chicago, IL; HATCH Gallery, Oakland CA; and gallery HOMELAND, Portland OR. Fernand is the co-founder and Residency Program director of Shared Space Studio, a community art space in Pentwater, Michigan. Her functional ceramics are available in Grand Rapids at Have Company.

KCAD Continuing Studies instructors have the artistic knowledge and real-world experience to give their students insights that will change the way they think about their own creative potential. Classes are always kept small so that each student gets the individual attention and respect they deserve.

MADELEINE GRAUMLICH, B.F.A. in Illustration at KCAD, focuses mainly in digital painting of sci-fi and fantasy characters and environments, but is also an expert with pen, pencil and paint. She loves costume and historical fashion imagery. She has been a KCAD Continuing Studies employee since 2015. She owns a successful handpainted dog portrait business.

TATSUKI HAKOYAMA, M.F.A. Painting, KCAD, is adjunct faculty at KCAD, a frequent instructor in the KCAD Continuing Studies program, and a freelance artist.

JEAN HANKS has been a web designer and developer for more than ten years. She was a Web Architect for C2 Media and Web Content Manager for Fusionary Media. She is currently self-employed and pursuing degrees in both web development and marketing at Davenport University.

MICHAEL HARRIS, B.F.A., KCAD, is a freelance illustrator and long-time KCAD Continuing Studies instructor. His credits include over fourteen years of monthly illustrations for Grand Rapids Family Magazine, political cartoons for the Grand Rapids Business Journal, and monthly illustrations in Lakeland Boating. He is listed as a caricature artist with Kramer Entertainment, Funny Business, and Jimmy Whiteside’s talent agencies, and teaches workshops at area schools.

CHAKILA L. HOSKINS received her M.F.A. in Painting from KCAD where she also obtained her B.F.A. in Painting. She is an art teacher at New Era Christian School in New Era, MI and a substitute teacher for Kentwood, Grand Rapids, Grandville, and Forest Hills Public

Schools. Her work has been shown in various exhibitions throughout Michigan. The most recent exhibitions were held in Detroit, MI; Grand Rapids, MI; and Kalamazoo, MI.

JAIME JOHNSON, B.F.A. in Photography, KCAD, is a local photographer. She works for Hey Jam Jam, 6.25 Paper Studio, and Artists Creating Together as a teacher.

JENNIFER JONES, M.F.A. in Drawing, KCAD, was the 2013 Studio Excellence Award Winner for Drawing. She has been a guest lecturer in KCAD’s Art History department, and is a fine art instructor for the Nancy K. Poppen Scholarship program at Muskegon Public Schools. She is represented by Gallery Uptown in Grand Haven, Michigan.

WILLIAM JONES, B.F.A. in Digital Illustration, KCAD, is a freelance artist and frequent instructor in the KCAD Continuing Studies program. He has a passion for the Manga illustration style.

MELLISSA MANZAGOL, M.F.A. in Motion Pictures & Television, Academy of Art University, has been a Michigan-based multimedia producer since returning home after a decade working in high-end Hollywood post production facilities. She also teaches animation related classes for The Art Institute of Pittsburgh Online Division.

JOSEPH MARTIN Is currently pursuing his B.F.A in Art Education at KCAD, minoring in painting. He is skilled at teaching adults and children. Joe specializes in drawing, painting, abstract art, and ceramics.

DAVID PETERS, B.F.A. in Drawing, KCAD, is a current student at Brainstorm School. He has lifelong knowledge of image-making, with professional knowledge of Photoshop, Sketchup, DAZStudio, Zbrush, and Keyshot.

JILL RICE is a graduate of KCAD with a major in Illustration. She has experience as an art teacher and graphic artist/illustrator.

CORINNE ROBERTS, B.F.A. in Illustration, KCAD, is a freelance illustrator and has published her own books. She is a frequent instructor in the KCAD Continuing Studies program.

ALYSON RODRIGUEZ, M.F.A., KCAD, is a painter, and instructor for the Continuing Studies program.

JESSICA SHELTON, B.F.A., KCAD, is the Metals/Jewelry lab technician at KCAD. She is also a jewelry designer and yoga instructor.

AMANDA SHERMAN, B.F.A. in Interior Design, with a minor in Historic Preservation at KCAD, owns a successful residential interior design studio in West Michigan and has volunteered in the community.

SHANE VANOOSTERHOUT, B.F.A. in Graphic Design, University of Michigan, teaches Digital Media at KCAD and is the author of “The Passionate Gardener” blog, and co-owner of MediaBeetle, LLC.

VALERIE WAHNA is a graduate of Kent State University with a B.F.A. in Printmaking. While working on an M.F.A., Valerie taught Art and Design courses. She has extensive experience as a Creative Manager, and her retail interior design and graphic work has been used in the U.S, U.K., Australia, and Malaysia. She is currently the owner of an Art and Design studio in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

MACKENZIE WESTRA graduated with her B.F.A. in sculpture and functional art at KCAD. Westra works with a variety of mediums from ceramics to fibers & utilizes that in her business Smallholding Craft. You can find Westra’s functional ceramics and fiber work at Light Gallery Gr. in Grand Rapids, MI. MacKenzie teaches continuing studies youth and adult courses .

KATHERINE WILSON, M.F.A. in Painting, KCAD, B.S. in Graphic Design and Illustration, Indiana Wesleyan University, has worked in graphic design, and program development. She has been an artist in residence and adjunct instructor at the college level.

HOW TO REGISTER AND POLICIES


Enrollment is on a first-come, first-served basis. To register, complete the attached registration form(s), p. 34-35, with check or money order and mail to KCAD Continuing Studies, 17 Fountain Street, NW, Grand Rapids, MI 49503, or register online at kcad.edu/continuing-studies. You can also call, 616.451.2787 x3012. VISA, MasterCard and Discover credit or debit cards are accepted online and by telephone. If you need assistance with online registration, call 616.451.2787 x3012. Registration is not valid unless accompanied by payment.

Receipts. Upon registration you will receive an electronic confirmation. Information regarding class outlines and supply lists (if applicable) is available at kcad.edu/continuing-studies/class-outlines.

Cash and Checks. Appropriate fees will be charged for checks which are returned unpaid due to insufficient funds. Please be aware when paying by cash or check, that if your class is cancelled you will need to complete additional paperwork in order to be reimbursed. Please allow up to five weeks processing time for refunds of payments made by check.

Course Tuition. Adult course tuition is based on six meeting times, although occasionally (if the schedule allows) courses may meet seven times. In the event of a cancellation, due to weather or building closure, adult courses which have met fewer than six times will schedule a make-up meeting. Saturday youth courses meet a total of five times. Workshops and day camps have differing schedules. Tuition for most youth and some adult courses also includes supplies. In the event additional supplies or fees apply, this is noted in the course catalog listing, along with dates and times of all meetings.

Course Cancellation. We reserve the right to cancel courses due to insufficient enrollment, with a full refund. If you registered as part of a group and one person’s course is cancelled, registrations for courses that have not been cancelled will not be refunded. Tuition paid online with debit or credit card will be credited back to your card. Please allow up to two weeks processing time for refunds. Tuition paid by check will require you to fill out additional paperwork before obtaining a refund. Please allow up to five weeks processing time for refunds of payments made by cash or check.

Snacks/Food in Classrooms. Food will not be served as part of the curriculum in KCAD Continuing Studies classes, unless noted in the course description. Youth classes take a break about halfway through each class session in a designated area. Many students bring money for the vending machines. Students under the age of eighteen will be limited to no more than one energy drink per day while in attendance. Students may bring drinks into the classroom but food is highly discouraged due to food allergies. A peanut/tree nut free table is designated in the break area.

Fee for Early Arrival or Late Pick Up. A fee of $15 per 15 minutes will be charged for any child under the age of 18 who is present without their parent or guardian in the building more than 15 minutes prior to or after the end of class.

Health Form and Waiver. Youth students are required to turn in a completed Health Form and Publicity Waiver prior to the start of class or day camp. The form can be mailed or brought in on the first day.

Drop off and Pick up of Youth. All youth must be dropped off at the 17 Pearl St Woodbridge N. Ferris Building, and accompanied into the building by an adult. All youth will be accompanied by an instructor to their classes. When arriving late, parents may accompany their students to class. Parents are required to identify themselves to the instructor or a staff member on the first day of class and to sign out all youth ages 12 and younger when they return to pick them up. Prior arrangements need to be made with our staff if an adult other than the parent or guardian is picking up a child. An adult staff member will supervise the lobby area for fifteen minutes prior to the beginning and after the end of all classes. We encourage parents to arrive early to pick their child up directly from the classroom. At the end of class, instructors of youth ages 12 and younger will escort remaining students to the lobby where our staff will supervise students until parents arrive. You must sign out your child, ages 12 and under, with the instructor or staff member.

Location. Students will be notified in advance by email of their room and building location. Signage will also be prominently displayed in the entrance of both buildings. All youth students will meet on the first floor of the Woodbridge N. Ferris Building, 17 Pearl Street on the first day of all youth sessions.

Parking. On-street parking is free after 6:00pm Monday through Friday, and all day Saturday. Parking in the lot directly behind the 17 Fountain Building, adjacent to Pearl St., is prohibited. Violators will be ticketed.

Special Needs. Individuals with disabilities who require special accommodations to participate should contact the KCAD President’s Office at 616.451.2787 x1200 at least 72 hours in advance.

Photographs. As a condition of enrollment, students and/or parents of minor students, consent to the following usage rights, for purposes which may include, but are not limited to: display, educational assessment, accreditation, archiving, and publicity/promotions for the college. Any parent/guardian may opt out by signing the waiver of publicity located on the KCAD Continuing Studies Participant Health Form. The college reserves the right to edit materials as needed for best use in context without specific written permission.

Use of photographs, video, audio, or other recordings of any artworks, designs, or other coursework produced while a student at KCAD.3. Use of photographic, video, audio, written or other recordings/documentation in college or

KCAD sponsored/affiliated classes or activities, on or off campus while a student at KCAD.

Usage may be in any medium. Materials may be used without further notification, compensation, or credit, though whenever possible, credit will be included for students enrolled in a KCAD degree program. Materials produced by or for KCAD are the sole property of KCAD.

All other copy and reproduction rights to original artwork, designs or coursework remain the sole property of the student.

Unclaimed Artwork. All artwork produced in Winter/Spring semester must be claimed on or before your class ends, with the exception of ceramics work that needs to be fired. Ceramics work must be picked up prior to May 1, 2019.

Withdrawal from a Course. There will be a full refund of tuition and fees for withdrawal requests submitted prior to the final registration deadline. There will be a partial (50%) refund of tuition and fees for withdrawal requests submitted after the final registration deadline and up to 24 hours before the class begins. A 50% fee will be charged for course transfers after the final registration deadline. No course transfers will be permitted on or after the day of the first class. There will be no refund of tuition or fees for withdrawal requests submitted on or after the day of the first class meeting. Please allow up to two weeks processing time for refunds of payments made online, and five weeks processing time for refunds of payments made by cash or check.

Late Registration and Withdrawal. Our standard withdrawal/refund policies apply to those students who register after the registration deadline.

Inclement Weather or Building Closure. In the event that classes are cancelled due to weather, an announcement will be made on local television stations. In the event an adult course has met fewer than six times a makeup meeting will be held.

Early Registration Tuition Discount. Individuals who register early for Continuing Studies classes are eligible for a 10% Early Registration Tuition Discount. This discount will appear automatically when registering online. This may not be used in conjunction with other discounts. The early registration deadline for Winter/Spring 2019 is November 19, 2018.

Alumni Discount. KCAD alumni, their spouses, and children under the age of eighteen receive a 10% discount on tuition for Continuing Studies classes.

LIMIT: One tuition discount per registration.

Supplies. Information regarding supplies is provided with the course listing. Class outlines and supply lists (if applicable) are available at kcad.edu/continuing-studies/class-outlines.

Classroom Management. Occasionally it is necessary to remove a youth student from a classroom for disruptive behavior. This is never our first course of action, but when it occurs, parents or guardians will be notified.
