DIRECTOR ’S NOTES
I grew up with the music of Richard Rodgers. He is best known for his fantastically successful collaboration with Oscar Ham-merstein. Without a doubt Rodgers and Hammerstein wrote the most recognized Broadway musicals of all time. Just about everyone can name one or more of their musicals. Even before this collaboration Mr. Rodgers has been highly successful, writing with many lyricists such as Lorenz Hart. Mr. Rodgers also wrote fabulous orchestra pieces such as the ballet music,
Slaughter on Tenth Avenue, and the award winning music for Victory at Sea. Later this season Civic audiences will be able to enjoy State Fair, an R & H score written originally for the movie screen.
Two By Two is full of wonderful music, pretty much lost to current audiences. As can happen on Broadway, shows may be less than successful even when having the marque names and music that is beautiful on the ear. This show was written as a star vehicle for Danny Kay, a very funny and highly strung song and dance man. Today, Mr. Kaye is better known for his movies such as White Christmas, but he was also a very successful nightclub performer. Mr. Kaye broke an ankle early in the run of the show and performed the run of Two By Two in a wheelchair. (Not an easy thing since the second act of the show takes place on a boat, the Ark!) Also, Mr. Kay was less than thrilled with his lines and continually adlibbed through each show. Mr. Rodgers was not amused. The New York press had a field day with bickering giants of Broadway. Mr. Kaye was not shy about his opinions. It is theorized that this very public argument may be responsible for the show not getting credit at “Tony Awards” time that year. Two By Two played for ten months on Broadway, a very respect-able length in those days and disappeared from view for the most part.
I hope you will enjoy this lost gem. The cast and I have had a great deal of fun in preparing this offering for your viewing pleasure.

SPOTLIGHT ON THE BOARD OF D IRECTORS
This is Waukesha Civic Theatre’s 54th year providing quality live entertainment to the Waukesha area community. On behalf of the Board of Directors, I would like to thank you for attending this performance and helping the Waukesha Civic Theatre continue its commitment to provide quality live entertainment to the Waukesha community. There are many ways for you to get involved at WCT. One of
them you are doing tonight; attending one of our productions! But being a patron is only one option. Consider acting, working on sets, ushering, serving on a committee, or serving on the Board. Your assistance would be greatly appreciat-ed no matter what you choose to do. We are, after all, a volunteer based, commu-nity based organization and we couldn’t do what we do without all the incredible volunteers that help us daily. Thanks again for coming to the Theatre.

M AD CORNER
I can’t believe I am starting my eighth season with the Wauke-sha Civic Theatre. My how time flies when you’re having fun! It has been a pleasure and an honor to work in this beautiful facility for this incredible organization and with this amazing community, and I look forward to many more seasons of high quality live entertainment.
I am thrilled that WCT is kicking off this season by presenting Two By Two. I played Japheth in a production a trillion years ago (it was just after the flood!), and I also choreographed a production a few hundred years after that, and it still is one of my favorite musicals of all time.
We have lots more in store to bring to Waukesha. Our 54th Season is full of excit-ing entertainment options. Enrich. Challenge. Entertain. That says it all, so keep watching, keep participating with, and keep supporting this cultural cornerstone. We couldn’t do it without you.

CIVIC BROADWAY SINGERS Are you looking for upbeat entertainment for your next special event? The Civic Broadway Singers perform year-round in southeast Wisconsin under the musical direction of Abby Lorenz. The 30-voice group sings memorable Broadway favorites for a variety of events from company picnics and Christmas parties to corporate lunches and grand openings. The Civic Broad-way Singers provide their own piano and sound system and will perform for groups of all sizes in exchange for a donation to the theatre. For schedul-ing the Civic Broadway Singers at your next event, please call Abby at (414)350-8713 or e-mail her at [email protected].
CIVIC SENIOR PLAYERS The Civic Senior Players are a dedicated group of Senior Citizens who have a craving to entertain others and who want to become skilled at it. The Players will devote time and energy to becoming actors. There is no charge to the seniors participating. This entertain-ment will be provided at no charge to any senior organization or residence and the only requirement is an audience of at least 20 who would enjoy some laughs and a good time. Donations to WCT are accepted. If you would like more informa-tion, call Carol at 262-549-1091.
ACAP PLAYMAKERS provide daytime performances (often of original works) based upon school curricula, themes, and ideas relevant to children at vari-ous stages of their education. The fall PlayMakers production is geared to our
elementary students, and the spring production is produced for middle school students. While offered primarily to school groups, these family friendly shows are great for public, private, and home school groups, Boy and Girl Scout troops, senior centers, and your fam-ily! Tickets are only $5 (or $4 each for groups of 20 or more), please call (262) 547-0708. PlayMakers rehearse and perform in the daytime, and are always looking for new actors and technical personnel.
ACCESSIBILITY The Margaret Brate Bry-ant Civic Theatre Building is fully handi-capped accessible and WCT is proud to offer a number of services for our patrons who have special needs. (Four (4) week notice is required and services are based upon availability.) For the hearing impaired, we have FM listening devices that will amplify the sounds of the performance. Patrons who are blind can receive audio descriptive ser-vices for the performance. Wheelchair accessibility is available in two forms: transfer seats and wheelchair positions. PATRONS Please refrain from wearing highly scented colognes, perfumes, hand cream or after shave to perfor-mances as many people have allergies/respiratory problems. WCT is con-cerned for all patrons and we appreci-ate your cooperation.
PARKING Parking is available on Main Street, in the Riverfront Plaza parking area behind the Theatre, off Barstow Street, in the parking facility on Broadway, and other locations in downtown Waukesha.
