Joe has been seen in numerous WCT shows, most recently The Light in The Piazza. Special thank you to daughter Jackie for going on this journey with me!

DIRECTOR ’S NOTES
Once on this Island opened on Broadway in 1990 and was nominated for eight Tony awards, and later won the Olivier Award for Best New Musical. I personally have seen this show at least six times (including the Waukesha South version our son, Matt, appeared in), by far the most I have seen any show. Why? Because it is one of those shows which can bring tears of joy to my eyes. I hope our production will do the same for you. The show, which is based on “The Little Mermaid” by
Hans Christian Anderson, brings up many topics including racial and class prejudice, and how long held traditions can affect one’s life choices. Ultimately, it’s a tale of faith, love, and sacrifi ces. Plenty of things to discuss after the show!
I want to thank John Cramer at WCT as well as the SummerStage Board for allowing me to make Once on this Island my directorial debut. In preparation, I read many articles, purchased some books, and came up with a rehearsal schedule and game plan well in advance. What I couldn’t do, though, is pull on practical knowledge on how to best integrate the strengths of both cast and crew to make a successful show. Fortunately, the patience and expertise of these folks were more than welcome, and, I hope, have allowed us to create a musical you thoroughly enjoy.
Thank you cast and crew!

Michael Talaska (Master Carpenter/Scenic Designer/Properties Designer) Michael is excited to be designing at WCT again. He has been designing sets at WCT for over thirteen years. Past productions include Crossing Delancey, A Tiny Miracle with a Fiberoptic Unicorn, Alone Together, Crimes of the Heart, 42nd Street, The Philadelphia Story, Whose Wives Are They Anyway?, and many
others. Michael would like to thank Dan, Kevin, Pat, Becky, and his mom for all their help and support.
Marissa Welvang (Ensemble/Kid’s Choir) Marissa loves to act, sing, dance, and play the piano. She has appeared in Seussical The Musical and ACT Live! at the Waukesha Civic Theatre She also has participated in Christmas plays at her church.

SPOTLIGHT ON THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS
Welcome to the Waukesha Civic Theatre and this performance of Once on this Island. This fi rst show in our 56th season marks our fi rst ever collaboration with another area theatre, SummerStage of Delafi eld. This amazing cast and crew performed this show three nights in one weekend at their outdoor theatre location at Lapham Peak State Park before bringing it indoors for us to enjoy. They are to be commended for the Herculean effort it takes to stage the same show in multiple locations.
I am really excited about some fantastic changes we have made to our season ticket packages this season. We realized that many of our Mainstage season ticket holders were also attending the summer and winter shows as well. We have added our new “Entertaining Eight” ticket package so that you can attend all eight shows with the same confi rmed seat for each show. And to keep things fl exible, we continue to offer our “Super Six,” “Fabulous Flex,” and “Perfect PIX 3” packages as before. As an added benefi t, each subscriber also receives a Subscriber Benefi ts Card containing discounted offers at 14 Waukesha-area restaurants. You can now have a nice dinner followed by a wonderful show and save a little money at the same time. And the great thing is that you can use the card as much as you want all season long.
Thanks for joining us today. We hope that you enjoy this delightful show.

save on postage costs, please include a self-addressed, stamped envelope if you would like your tickets mailed to you, or designate that you would like them held at the Will Call window for pick-up. Thank you.
PLEASE DON’T BE A “NO SHOW!” If you have tickets but cannot make the performance, why not give your tickets to friends to enjoy or let us resell them? You may be able to consider the price of the tickets that you turn in as a tax-deductible donation.
CIVIC BROADWAY SINGERS Are you looking for upbeat entertainment for your next special event? The Civic Broadway Singers perform year-round in southeastern Wisconsin under the musical direction of Abby Lorenz. The 30-voice group sings memorable Broad-way favorites for a variety of events, from company picnics and Christmas parties to corporate lunches and grand openings. The Civic Broadway Singers provide their own piano and sound system and will perform for groups of all sizes in exchange for a donation to the theatre. For scheduling the Civic Broad-way Singers at your next event, please call Abby at (414) 350-8713 or e-mail her at [email protected].
CIVIC SENIOR PLAYERS The Civic Senior Players – Traveling to make you laugh! We are a fun-loving group of performers who love to entertain oth-ers. We’ll bring our unique comedy-va-riety show to your senior organization, community group, or any event looking for a laugh, in exchange for a dona-tion to the Waukesha Civic Theatre. To schedule an event, or if you have an in-terest in becoming a performer, please call Carol at (262) 549-1091 or e-mail her at [email protected].
ACAP PLAYMAKERS provide daytime performances (often of original works) based upon school curricula, themes, and ideas relevant to children at vari-ous stages of their education. The fall PlayMakers production is geared to our elementary students, and the spring
production is produced for middle school students. While off ered primar-ily to school groups, these family-friendly shows are great for public, private, and home school groups, Boy and Girl Scout troops, senior centers, and your family! Please call (262) 547-0708 for ticket prices and information. PlayMakers rehearse and perform in the daytime, and are always looking for new actors and technical personnel.
ACCESSIBILITY The Margaret Brate Bryant Civic Theatre Building is fully handicapped-accessible, and WCT is proud to off er a number of services for our patrons who have special needs (a four-week notice is required and ser-vices are based upon availability). For the hearing impaired we have a T-Coil Loop System, T-Coil Listening Devices, and FM listening devices that will amplify the sounds of the performance.
Patrons must have hearing aids with telecoils installed and activated to use the Loop System. Patrons who are blind can receive audio descriptive services for the performance. Wheelchair accessibility is available in two forms: transfer seats and wheelchair positions.
PATRONS Please refrain from wearing highly-scented colognes, perfumes, hand cream, or aftershave to perfor-mances, as many people have allergies or respiratory problems. WCT is con-cerned for all patrons and we appreci-ate your cooperation.
PARKING Parking is available on Main Street, in the Riverfront Plaza parking area behind the Theatre, off Barstow Street, in the parking facility on Broad-way, and at other locations in down-town Waukesha.
