As we gather today, we acknowledge the sacred and traditional territory of the Huron-Wendat, the Anishnaabeg, the Haudenosaunee, and the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nations. This territory is covered by the Williams Treaties. Whitby Courthouse Theatre recognizes the enduring presence of all First Nations, Métis and Inuit people. We are grateful to have the opportunity to work in this community, and on this territory.

s If you are a long time fan of “Little Women” and love the films, or if you are a newcomer to the story and just love musicals, we hope our production of this classic story appeals and delights you. The story spans more than four years and follows the journeys of sisters Meg, Jo, Beth and Amy, their family and their community. Each character has a story to tell and I hope each will capture your heart.

Our Whitby Courthouse Theatre story of bringing this show to life has been a wonderful journey as well. Empowered by the glorious orchestral score, our singers and our band brought heart and soul to the music. The imaginative script inspired our designers to bring beauty, colour, light and movement to our stage. Our production team managed every detail with care. Every person brought such positive energy and love to this show. I am humbled and ever so grateful to have led this team.

A wise woman once said, (or maybe I read it on a t-shirt) “Theatre is Life, Film is Art, Television is Furniture”. While our story tonight is a classic, and the world has changed some since 1869, we still see our battles, our joys and our lives reflected in this timeless piece. So, enjoy some theatre – enjoy some life tonight!

    Deb Smith Director

As you are settling into your seats before the overture begins, you may hear a few musicians tuning and warming up their instruments, all to get ready to join the ensemble of singers to fill this theatre and your hearts with most rich sounding music Broadway has given us in a long time.

The journey to bring Little Woman the Broadway Musical to Whitby Courthouse Theatre has been a long and complicated one, but what made me want to music direct this show was simply found on the pages of the score. The music ranges from classic to modern Broadway, light to deeply moving. And unlike most musicals, although there is a cast of 10, there is only one song that includes everyone, giving us wonderful numbers featuring soloists, duets and small groups.

Adding to the strong ensemble of singers is an orchestra of 12 musicians, playing over 40 instruments. The sound is full and beautiful – a perfect complement to the wonderful story we have all come to love.

    Enjoy this musically theatrical experience.

KATHLYN ANGELO (Properties) Her first time working with Whitby Courthouse Theatre, Kathlyn was thrilled when asked to do props for this wonderful production alongside an extremely talented cast and crew. She became involved

with community theatre in 2017 with costumes/props and appeared in her first acting role in 2019 (ACT's Blithe Spirit and currently, A Few Good Men). Kind thanks to Heather Doucette and Deb Smith for this exciting opportunity and experience, and to those involved who provided props!

DIANE COBBING (Make-Up) studied theatrical makeup at Seneca College many years ago and is very happy to lend her skills to local theatre. Little Women will be the fifth production at Whitby Courthouse Theatre in which she has played a

Thank you to Ted, Brandon, Deb, Stephanie and Heather for all their help and support in bringing 1860s Massachusetts to life. Also, to a wonderful cast, who were so easy to work with and dress, and finally to the costume team who cut, glued, stitched, hemmed, steamed, pressed… Astonishing!

MICHELLE LEHMAN (Choreographer) While holding her Society of Russian Ballet Associate Teacher certification, Michelle is currently completing her MSc(OT) degree. Throughout her training, Michelle has

projection, sets, acted and operated. He has received THEAs twice for lighting design (August: Osage County and A Few Good Men), once for sound design (Communicating Doors), and has earned two additional nominations. Love and thanks to Ted, Ian, Deb, Heather, Alix, Charlon, Vagner, and all those who made this set come to life, and especially to Overton Rideout, his late-grandfather who instilled in him and many in his family a love for precision craftsmanship which guided the creation of this piece.

DEB SMITH (Director) After 35 years and 55 productions with Whitby Courthouse Theatre, Deb has found another favourite show. She is grateful for the opportunity to work with such a talented and dedicated cast and to have collaborated with Ted (once again!) Heather, Stephanie

and the amazing design team and production crew. Deb raises Guide Dog puppies and her current pup-in-training, Georgie has been a frequent visitor at rehearsals. Deb especially wants to thank Michael for his inspiration and support. “Dream it – Do it.”

PAUL SOWERBUTTS (Stage Manager) is excited to be working backstage on his first musical in a long time.  He most recently stage managed Whitby Courthouse Theatre's production of It's Only A Play and last seasons extravaganza, Next To Normal. His on-stage credits

PEGGY SOWERBUTTS (Assistant Stage Manager) Once again, the game of “so guys...” has foiled Peggy. She is back where she loves to be during Whitby Courthouse Theatre's productions, working backstage. Some of her many Whitby Courthouse Theatre credits include

August Osage County, Catch Me if You Can, Things My Mother Taught Me, Mambo Italiano, Next to Normal, Murder in the First and, It's Only a Play. She thanks her friends and family for convincing her to play along to “so guys.”

  • MIGUEL ESTEBAN (Rehearsal Pianist/ First Violinist) is currently in his third year of piano performance at the University of Toronto. During rehearsals of Little Women, Miguel was the rehearsal pianist, but once the show opened, he has traded 88 keys for a violin

bow as first violinist in the amazing 12 member orchestra. Miguel enjoys playing in pit orchestras, being a rehearsal pianist and, most recently, being a music director at various theatres in the region. He is so “delighted” to be part of this production - his first show at Whitby Courthouse Theatre!

Kiss the Moon, Kiss the SunAt 35-years old, Robert has the mental capacities of an 8-year old, but that doesn’t make him any less wise in the ways of the world. Holly is pregnant, alone and simply needs the right break.

A story about people finding the nerve to take responsibility, and persevering against the odds.

Uplifting, poignant and funny, Kiss the Moon, Kiss the Sun will capture your heart and possibly change the way you view people forever. “Before this glorious life is done, I shall kiss the moon and kiss the sun. It’s about trying to get the most out of life, but Robert and I have a different meaning for it. I’m the moon that watches over him at night, and he’s the sun who brightens up my days.” — Norm Foster

Disney's NewsiesSet in turn-of-the century New York City, Disney's Newsies is the rousing tale of Jack Kelly, a charismatic newsboy and leader of a band of teenaged “newsies.” When titans of publishing raise distribution prices at the newsboys’ expense, Jack rallies newsies from across the city to strike against the unfair conditions and fight for what's right!

Based on the 1992 motion picture and inspired by a true story, Disney's Newsies features a Tony Award-winning score by Alan Menken and Jack Feldman and a book by Tony Award winner Harvey Fierstein. Featuring the classic songs “Carrying the Banner,” “Seize the Day,” and “Santa Fe,” Newsies is packed with non-stop thrills and a timeless message, perfect for the whole family and every audience.
