WEEK SEVENTEEN: CCC SEMIFINALS, CORBANABOUT THE RAIDERSThe Southern Oregon University Raiders ended their regular season with an overall record of 22-9 and 10-8 in the conference which placed them fifth in the Cascade Collegiate Conference. They are currently on a three game win streak after defeating Warner Pacific in the first round CCC tournament play. The Raiders are led by junior, Melissa Sweat who averages 19.07 points per game. The Raiders are ranked No. 1 in Div. 2 in defensive rebounds per game and No. 2 in rebounds per game, field goal percentage, total scoring offense, and total rebound offense.

LAST TIME THEY MET...Jan. 19, 2013La Grande, Ore. - The No. 6 Eastern Oregon women’s basketball team defeated Southern Oregon tonight for the second time this sea-son, 89-71, extending the Mountaineers win streak to 15. Kelsea Hurliman and Nicole Redd each finished with 18 points. Hurliman also tallied 6 rebounds and 2 assists and Redd had 4 assists and five steals. Teammates Korie Bourn and Jorie Freeman contributed with 17 and 13 points respectively. Southern (15-7, 5-6 CCC) was led by Alexi Smith with 17 points and 6 rebounds. Melissa Sweat and Allison Gida each finished with 12 points respectively. Eastern (21-2, 11-0 CCC) would start the game on a 9-2 run and not give up the lead for the remainder of the game. The Raiders would come as close as a point with 12:28 to play in the first half but the Mountaineers pulled away and took a 38-29 lead into halftime. Midway through the second half EOU held a 65-48 lead and took their largest lead of the game, 27, from a jumper by Hurliman with just under five minutes to play in the second half . EOU stays undefeated this season in conference play. As a team, EOU finished the game shooting 46% (36-of-78) from the field and 36% (9-of-25) from behind the arc in an evenly matched game as SOU finished shooting 46% (25-of-54) from the field and 33% (3-of-9) from behind the three point line.

ABOUT THE CONFERENCEAfter an exciting regular season, the field is set for the 2013 Cascade Conference Women’s Basketball Championship, which will begin on Tuesday at the campus sites of the top four seeds.

The first seed goes to Eastern Oregon University. The Mountaineers became the first team in conference history to finish the season with a record of 18-0 and their reward will be a first round matchup with eighth-seeded Corban. The Warriors, who finished the regular season with a conference record of 5-13, earned the final playoff spot by virtue of a tiebreaker over Concordia.

The second-seed belongs to the Lady Yotes of College of Idaho. Posting a conference record of 15-3 in the regular season, College of Idaho will host seventh-seed Northwest Christian on Tuesday evening. The Beacons finished the regular season with a record of 6-12 in CCC play.

Oregon Tech is the third seed after earning a win over Corban on Saturday night. The Hustlin’ Owls finished the regular season at 20-8 and 13-5 in CCC play and will play host to six-seed Evergreen, who won the tiebreaker over Northwest Christian after posting a regular season record of 6-12 in CCC action. The final pairing matches fourth-seed Warner Pacific hosting fifth-seed Southern Oregon. The Knights posted a record of 11-7 in conference while Southern Oregon was just a game behind at 10-8.

The 2013 Cascade Conference Women’s Basketball Championship begins on Tuesday night with all games set to tip at 7 p.m. Tuesday’s winners will meet on Friday night in the semifinal round with the winners of those games advancing to the championship on Monday, Feb. 25.
