BLOOD PRESSURES
Blood pressures are taken in the church office after
the 9:30 AM service on the first Sunday of the
month. Stop in and check out yours.
‗Tis a gift to be simple, ‗tis a gift to be free…‖ so starts the familiar Shaker
hymn extolling the virtues of simplicity. ―Live simply so others may
simply live‖ is a bumper sticker and t-shirt slogan. Real Simple is a
popular magazine that suggests ways to de-stress and unclutter and breathe.
Simplicity is not a new idea but it is a popular idea. Basically it is living
consciously – making conscious choices in all aspects of life. It is the
antithesis of hoarding. Have only what you need. Be gentle with the planet.
Live in the awareness of others and their needs.
Simplicity is stewardship. We are all connected. How we use what has been
given to us is the measure of our stewardship. That knowledge that we are
connected with each other and not in competition with each other changes our perspectives and opens us
to possibilities. When we recognize that all we have comes from God, we understand we do not really
possess anything. Sharing does not deplete us but affirms the fact we are bound together by God. We are
stewards of everything because everything is a gift from God: our bodies, our children, the earth, and our
money. Stewardship recognizes the responsibilities that accompany financial success. Richard Foster, in
his Freedom of Simplicity, writes, ―Simplicity calls us to a simple lifestyle, but it does not always call us to
a reduction in income. God calls some to increase their income in order to use it for the good of all.‖
There is great freedom in recognizing the Source of everything – great freedom and responsibility.
We ―tend‖ to our responsibilities like a garden; encouraging growth and sharing the bounty with all.
Stewardship is not a campaign soliciting funds for the church. It is our response to the interconnectedness
of all of humanity with the Creator. Our happiness is a by-product of intentional, connectional living.
This year the Stewardship Committee chose the New Consecration Sunday program for our stewardship
campaign. To be consecrated is to be set aside for a holy use. Our gifts to the church are meant for ―holy
use.‖ Sometimes that‘s helping a single mom out with food, sometimes it‘s paint and plaster for ceiling
cracks, sometimes it‘s making payroll or keeping the lights on. God does wonders through us.
Stewardship is choosing to be a conduit for sharing blessings.
October 23 is Consecration Sunday followed by a Celebration Luncheon in Room 110. Please plan to
attend worship and lunch that day to celebrate God‘s many blessings to us.
Peace,
A CONGREGATIONAL MEETING will be held on October 30th at approximately 10:30 a.m. for

ROOM REQUEST FORMS Are available in the office. Call, stop down
or email me and I‘ll be sure to get a Request
Form to you.
FOR SECURITY ISSUSES
please remember to let the office
know if you change or cancel
your meeting date and/or time.
CALENDAR
CALENDAR
CALENDAR
In the office you will find a
giant wall calendar. This
calendar is used by the staff
to make sure that the building
is secured when not in use and
open when it needs to be. It‘s
used for planning our events, keeping track of what
meetings are going on and it gives us a clear picture of
what is happening at Wayside on a day to day basis.
HOWEVER, this calendar is also used by the Worship
and Planning committee to plan out special events for
service. It‘s used by the Deacons, Elders and different
committees to plan and prepare for parties, fund raisers and
gatherings. Please don‘t assume that since you discussed it
at your committee meeting that it will filter down to me in
the office. The office is open from 9-1 every day. You can
stop down, call me or e-mail me and check and double
check that your ―event‖ whatever it might be gets posted
on the calendar. (Remember all room use is subject to
Session approval) Only events on the calendar will be
posted in the Waysider and Bulletin. (Please DO NOT
write on the calendar, leave me a note)
Thank you for all your help in this matter.

IT’S CONE TIME
Thank you to all the women who gathered this past week to assemble the cones that we sell
each fall and winter to support the Women‘s programs at Wayside.
Soon a variety of old favorites and some new tastes will be available for purchase on Sunday
mornings in Room 110. This year we will have Friendship Soup (now available in two
sizes.) Pasta Fagiole, Tortilla Soup, Potato Soup, Turkey Surprise (an easy to prepare din-
ner), Cranberry-Pecan Rice Pilaf, Nutty Orzo and Rice Pilaf, Cranberry Cornbread, Chocolate Chip Kookie
Brittle, Almond Joy® Brownies, Cranberry Hootytcreeks, (wait until you test them...yummy!), and Russian
Tea in regular and decaf.
We are pleased to tell you that even with the increase in prices of our supplies we are able to keep our prices
the same as last year at $6.50 per cone for the large cones. The smaller Friendship Soup, the Turkey Surprise
and the Russian Tea (available in regular or decaf) will be $4.00.
CROP WALK
The CROP WALK is Sunday, October
16th in the Village of Hamburg.
The Mission Committee set a goal
of 20 walkers from Wayside. Applications are
available in the office or you may register that day.
Walk begins at 12:30 at Hamburg Presbyterian
Church.
CONDOLENCES
Wayside extends condolences to the family of
Robert Stuart who passed away this week. A
memorial service for Robert will be held on
Saturday, October 22, 2011 at 2:00 pm here at
Wayside
Wayside also extends condolences to John and
Esther Wawzyniak upon the death of their
daughter Dianne (Wawzyniak) Moran. Dianne
passed away last July and sadly Wayside was not
contacted although she was a member here.
Please-if you are made aware of the illness or death
of someone from Wayside, please call the office or
Pastor Amy. Families may choose to have services
elsewhere but as a caring community we still want
to know and be a comfort to families in their time
of grief.

MISSION & OUTREACH
World Communion Sunday is
October 2, 2011! We will take

Twenty-five percent of the offering is kept and
used for local peacemaking. The Mission/Outreach
Committee voted to send that portion to the
Western New York Peace Center.

St. Stephen's Ministers
One on one. One to one. One with one.
Confidentially.
The positive power of a good retreat.
Sometimes; in going through or living with a crisis; the crisis gathers strength just as we are at our weakest.
Overwhelmed and surrounded; we find ourselves alone and no longer acting; but merely reacting to circum-
stances and situations over which we have no real control.
Time to retreat. Fighting on, when at our weakest, is not the way to victory. Pulling back from the fight
often reveals that we were never battling alone. Some one else steps up to take our place in the battle. As
we move back from the battle; we find other (friends and allies) quickly pull up beside us. Moving further
away, we discover a whole army of allies waiting with fresh supply to reinvigorate and revive our spirits.
Retreat is not defeat; retreat is not surrender.
Looking back at the battle (from a distance) we can get a new perspective, see new lines of attack, even
notice where the enemy is weak and we have had some successes. With renewed vigor and clearer vision
we can rejoin the crisis with a greater sense of our own identity and choices.
Make time for retreat. Whether it be an hour of silence, a walk in the woods, coffee with a friend, an
evening out for a meal or a movie. Time for yourself is time well spent.
And if you want an extra listening ear or friendly smile to get away with you; Stephen Ministers will gladly
make time and take time; to break away from the daily routine, for a deep breath and a chance to find new
energies and a different perspective.

Thoughts for Today
Yesterday's pain is today's strength.
"Forgiveness is the only road that leads out of disaster, past all suffering and finally away from death.”
(A Course in Miracles)
Worry never climbed a hill. Worry never paid a bill. Worry never dried a tear. Worry never calmed a fear.

We are always in need of baked
goods. If you‘re making a batch of
goodies for your family, make an
extra batch and bring it down to the church and
throw it in the freezer. Thank you!
NURSERY HOURS
Miss Barb & Miss Joanne are in the Nursery every
Sunday from 9:20 AM until the end of
the service. Please pick up your
children before Coffee Hour.
(For infants and toddlers through age 3)

position and fill that position in January 2012. Paid training is 10 hours a week through December and
can begin immediately. The permanent position is a flexible 15 hours a week and includes Sunday
mornings. Qualifications include experience in education and/or theology and strong people skills.
Resumes should be submitted to the office to the attention of Personnel.

CONSECRATION SUNDAY IS COMING
Congregations that approach financial stewardship from a biblical perspective do not view the money
Christians give to their church merely as a way to pay its bills. Rather, such congregations see financial
contributions as a way to help people grow spiritually in their relationship with God by supporting their
church‘s mission and ministry with a percentage of their incomes.
Our congregation‘s Session members have selected the New Consecration Sunday Stewardship Program as a
way to teach the biblical and spiritual principles of generous giving in our stewardship education emphasis
this year.
New Consecration Sunday is based on the biblical philosophy of the need of the giver to give for his or her
own spiritual development, rather than on the need of the church to receive. Instead of treating people like
members of a social club who should pay dues, we will treat people like followers of Jesus Christ who
want to give unselfishly as an act of discipleship. New Consecration Sunday encourages people toward
proportionate and systematic giving in response to the question, ―What percentage of my income is God
calling me to give?‖
During morning worship on Consecration Sunday, we are asking our attendees and members to make their
financial commitments to our church‘s missionary, benevolent, and educational ministries in this community
and around the world.
Every attendee and member who completes an Estimate of Giving Card does so voluntarily by attending
morning worship on Consecration Sunday. We urge people to attend who feel strongly opposed to
completing a card. The procedure is done in such a way that no one feels personal embarrassment if he or
she chooses not to fill out a card.
We will do no home solicitation to ask people to complete cards. During morning worship our guest leader
will conduct a brief period of instruction and inspiration, climaxed by members making their commitments
as a confidential act of worship.
We will encourage participation in Consecration Sunday events through the Consecration Sunday team and
session members. Since we will make no follow-up visits to ask people to complete their cards, we will make
every effort to inform, inspire, and commit everyone to attend Consecration Sunday worship.
Thanks in advance for your enthusiastic participation in Consecration Sunday events.

BOOK DISCUSSION GROUP
The cool weather is here and we have some great books for you to read over the next several
months. Pick them up at the library, your favorite book store, or download to your ―Kindle‖ and
come and discuss them at future meetings. The book for discussion on Monday, October 24 at
7 PM is ―The Weird Sisters‖ by Eleanor Brown.
The Andreas family is one of readers. The three sisters are named after Shakespearean women by their
father, a professor of Shakespeare. Each one returns home after years away to nurse their ailing mother,
They have come to lick their wounds and bury their secrets and are appalled to find each other there.
But they find that everything they have been running from...one another, their small hometown, and
themselves...might offer more than ever expected.
The book for the November 28th discussion is ―The Girls From Ames‖ by Jeffrey Zaslow. Can you
imagine life without your best friend? This true story chronicles the lives of eleven women who have
been friends for more than forty years. It is a wonderful review of just what it takes to have enduring
friendships that have withstood both time and distance.
For the December 12 meeting (note the change of date) we are reading ―Room‖ by Emma Donoghue.
―Room is a book to read in one sitting. When it‘s over you look up: the world looks the same but you
somehow are different and that feeling lingers for days.‖ This quote if from author Audrey Niffenegger
after she read ―Room.‖ To five-year-old Jack, Room is the entire world. It is where he was born and grew
up; it‘s where he lives with his Ma as they learn and read and eat and sleep and play. At night his Ma shuts
him safely in the wardrobe, where he is meant to be asleep when Old Nick visits. To see if there is an
escape from the Room read this amazing novel, told entirely in the language of the energetic, pragmatic
five-year-old Jack, ROOM is a celebration of resilience and the limitless bond between parent and child, a
brilliantly executed novel about what it means to journey from one world to another.

FROM THE FINANCE COMMITTEE
Here is a quick update on the financial health of Wayside PC. The Finance Committee has continued to
monitor the spending of various church departments. Our 2011 budget has so far proven to be a good ―best
guess‖ representation of what we needed to spend to keep staff, programs & facility all up and running.
Congrats and thanks to Pastor Amy, Julie, Mary Lou and all the other folks who make Wayside work so
well for so many people and families.
A look at our giving shows that as a congregation we have responded very well this past year to the
financial mini-crisis of the summer of 2010. Here are some observations that we as a committee have
made over the past year.
1. ―You get what you ask for‖ There was tremendous response to the 2-5-10 campaign. Giving increased,
showing that Wayside plays an important part in our lives. Thank you.
2. Expenses have been managed very tightly. We feel this must continue for the foreseeable future.
3. Giving has now leveled off. For the past twelve plus months we saw our bank balance slowly increase
each month, that trend has leveled off over the past several months.
4. At the 2/3rds mark of the year, pledge giving was at about 2/3rds complete. Thank you!
5. Fund raisers continue to add incremental benefit to the church. Please support them as you are able.
6. We anticipate the need to add some part time staff, especially in the music department. This comes at
an increase in staff costs, albeit a modest one. (approx. $700.00 per month.)
As we continue on our pilgrim journey, let us celebrate God‘s love as shown to us through Wayside! A
place of love, of growth, of service to God and community. Thank you for your trust and your faithfulness.
Keep up the good work
Blessings,
Bruce Decker
GOOD NEWS FROM MUSIC AND WORSHIP!
Music is an integral part of our Worship every Sunday. We joyfully introduce two
additions to our Music Program: Bill Louden is our new keyboardist and Bruce Decker is
our Music Coordinator/Choir Director. We look forward to continued excellence in our
music program and are grateful for the many gifts our volunteers bring to the service.
Thank you and "Welcome" to Bill and Bruce!
BIBLE BASICS!
On Tuesdays in October, we are featuring a Bible Basics class. This is Bible 101. We will look at Scripture
as a book and become familiar with the reoccurring themes of the story. This class is open to everyone and
is designed to enrich our experience of worship (where those themes reemerge) and expand our
understanding of discipleship. Class meets at 7:00 pm in Room 110 and is taught by Pastor Amy.
The only book you‘ll need is the Bible so bring a Bible or borrow one from here.

FAMILY RELIEF FUND
While there is always a need, job loss and financial difficulties are especially hard on families that are
struggling to make ends meet. If you could spare a dollar or two, please help out with this important
ministry. Please annotate the check or envelope accordingly.
QUILT FOR THE LORD & MONDAY EVENING STITCHERS (STITCHIN’ II)
Quilt for the Lord meets every Wednesday from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. in Room 110. We are not just
quilters, we are also knitters and scrapers. Everyone is welcome to join us.
The women are currently stitching one hundred dresses to send to girls in Africa. What a great way to fulfill
our global mission.
The Monday Evening Stitchers (Stitchin’ Time II), meet on the first and third Mondays at 6:30 PM.
Come and join them on October 3 and October 17th.
If you know of a church member that would benefit from being wrapped in the warmth of one of our quilts,
or have any questions, please call the office or contact either Shirley 649-0736 or Mary Lou
MISSION Increasing our awareness of the scope of our church’s
mission throughout the world.
Hello Everyone.
Sunday School is off to a wonderful start. To date we have sixty-four children
registered many of them are new to our school. Welcome to these children and their families.
As you know we were very concerned about having teachers for the 6,7, & 8th grade class. This year we
will be team teaching with folks who have volunteered to work with each other to make sure there are at
least two teachers every week for this class. It will be a new experience for many of us as we work to iron
out schedules to cover each week and make sure the curriculum is in place. I have led the class with
Michael Edwards and Jim Barry for the last two weeks. What a pleasure to work with this amazing group
of youth in our church and these two men who have so much to offer.
When you see Diane Camilloni thank her for her years of teaching. She was teaching when I started as CE
Director seven years ago. We certainly appreciate her years of dedication to our children. Who can forget
her delicious monkey bread, the great pretzels she helped the children bake every Lent and the bag painting
she organized every November. We‘ll miss you as a teacher Diane, but are so glad you are having the
opportunity to travel and spend time with your family.
This coming month Pastor Amy will be conducting a First Communion class for children on Wednesday,
October 26th. A letter will be sent home with children explaining the training. Those who take the class,
will receive their First Communion on Sunday, November 6th.
You have probably heard of the seven-year-itch. Perhaps that is what is happening to me. At any rate I have
decided to retire as Christian Education Director at the end of the year. It has been my pleasure to serve the
families of Wayside. I know it was where I worked, but never thought of my position as a job…I loved what
I was doing and the folks I was working with. I am sure I will still be involved, just in a different manner.
If you have any questions, please give me a call, contact Pastor Amy or Jim Barry, Chair of the
CE Committee.
Blessings,
Mary Lou Zerby
CE Director

GET THE JUMP ON CHRISTMAS AND GIFT GIVING
It‘s not too early to start thinking about the holidays and the celebration of our Lord‘s birth.
A large part of our celebration is the giving of gifts to those we love or care about or to
those unknown who have great needs. Here at Wayside our Comfort Corner Kitchen
provides ―Comfort Food Cones.‖ The addition of a few ingredients, a little cooking, and
the recipient has a heartwarming meal, snack or beverage. These are great gift items for
teachers, grandparents, aunts, uncles, students, or even yourself when you need a quick
meal or a yummy treat. We want to be sure we can fill everyone‘s order, so you can preorder your cones
and pick them up on a Sunday morning starting now (fill in the date below.) We will do our best to fill
your order, but it is first come, first serve.
CONE ORDER FORM
_____ Friendship Soup—a delightfully seasoned mix of assorted peas, beans, rice, and pasta. Makes a
huge pot of soup to serve to family & friends. Our best selling soup.
_____ Friendship Soup - the same great soup as above, but half the amount. $4.00 each
_____ Pasta Fagiole—If you like a thick, hearty, soup, you will love this. It is also perfect for vegetarians
because it can be prepared with vegetable broth instead of chicken broth.
_____ Potato Soup—this was extremely popular last year and you only have to add eight cups of boiling
water and some Parmesan cheese...how easy is that.
_____ Tortilla Soup— Mild spices and tortilla chips make this soup a taste treat you won‘t want to miss.
(Our Taste Panel said, ―Thumbs Up!‖ on this.)
_____ Turkey Surprise - New this year. Just add a pound of ground turkey and some tomatoes for a
delicious meal for your family that can be prepared in under an hour. $4.00 each
_____ Cranberry-Pecan Rice Pilaf—the perfect mealtime accompaniment—it‘s delicious with all meats
and makes a large batch. You can even be creative and add chicken and vegetables to make a dinner
casserole.
_____ Nutty Orzo and Rice Pilaf - New this year. Brown rice and pecans add great taste and texture to
this dish. Just add water and butter for a side dish that your family and guests will love.
_____ Cranberry Cornbread - When we tasted this, we knew we had to include in our cones. Moist
and delicious, it may be the best cornbread ever.
_____ Chocolate Chip ―Kookie Brittle‖ - You‘ll never eat another chocolate chip cookie once you try
this delicious mix—it‘s addictive. Our best selling cookie mix.
_____ Cranberry Hootycreeks - New this year. White chocolate, pecans, and cranberries combine to
make this cookie absolutely delicious. Bet you can‘t eat one!
_____ Almond Joy® Brownies– If you like the candy bar of the same name, you will want to order
these chewy, fudgy delights.
_____ Russian Tea—A delightful mix of tea, lemon, orange, and spices. Just the thing to sip on a cold
winter day. $ 4.00 Available in regular and decaf.
