WARRIOR BASEBALL RECORD BOOK | 1 in the 49th round of the 2005 draft by the Chicago White Sox, and Anthony Bass was selected in the fifth round – highest ever for a WSU player – in 2008. Ryan Kelley, who took over following Alexander’s departure for Eastern Michigan, led WSU to 25 wins in 2009, the most under any first-year coach in program history. The following year, WSU went 32-20 and won both the GLIAC regular-season and tournament championships. The Warriors set a then-school record with 35 wins in 2011 and advanced to the NCAA Midwest Regional championship game for the second time since 2008. Ryan LaPensee (2007-10) surpassed Jeney as WSU’s all-time hits leader in 2010, and Michael Wiseman (2008-11), Wayne State’s career RBI king, was a three-time All-American in 2011 and the Division II National Defensive Player of the Year. The Warriors won 34 games in 2012 and appeared in the NCAA Tournament for the third consecutive season. In 2013, Brad Guenther was named GLIAC Player of the Year as WSU won 32 games. In 2014, the Warriors won a program record 36 games, reaching the 30-win mark for the fifth consecutive season. In addition, WSU went 15-1, which is the best home winning percentage in program history. WSU appeared in the NCAA Midwest Regional for the sixth time in program history and opened with a win over GLVC Champions Drury University. Despite the injury challenges that 2015 presented, the Warriors showed grit to win 24 games and qualify for the GLIAC Tournament for the eighth consecutive season. The Green & Gold made the most if its opportunity and won two elimination games over Malone and Ohio Dominican to force a semifinal against Ashland. In a heartbreaker, the Eagles scored five runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to steal an 8-7 victory. The overachieving Warriors entered as the sixth seed but finished third in the four-day, double-elimination tournament. WSU faced more adversity in 2016 with injuries but were able to advance to the postseason conference tournament for the ninth straight season, playing as the No. 4 seed. The Warriors topped Malone in the opening round but dropped the next two contests to finish the season at 28-24 overall and 19-13 in the league. WSU won nearly 70 percent of its home games, going 14-7. The Warriors returned to the NCAA Tournament in 2017 and wont hree games, falling three outs short of the regional title game. WSU won 34 games and 20 league contests, while Coach Kelley passed Coach George to become the program’s all-time winningest coach. WSU won 27 games in 2018 and were seeded fourth in the GLIAC Tournament where the Warriors dropped two very tight games. Jared Tobey was drafted by the Detroit Tigers in the 30th round. William Collins, Wayne State’s first baseball All-American, was inducted into the WSU Athletic Hall of Fame in 1984. Former catcher Michael Wiseman is the all-time RBI leader at Wayne State. He was a three-time All-American and in 2011 was named the ABCA National Defensive Player of the Year. The 2017 season marked the 77th year of baseball at Wayne State University. In that time, WSU has won 1,266 games, claimed seven conference championships as well as two regular- season league titles, and made seven appearances in the NCAA Regional tournament. The baseball program began in 1941 under head coach Joseph E. Truske, who led the Tartars to a 5-7 record in his first season. Wayne State Athletic Hall of Famer William “Rip” Collins became WSU’s first baseball All-American in 1946. Recording a .325 batting average as the squad’s second leading hitter and notching a lofty .625 slugging percentage, Collins also led the team in runs with 13, tied for the team lead in hits with 12, and registered a .956 fielding percentage as an outstanding catcher. After a four-year hiatus during which time Leo Maas took over, Truske returned to the team in 1946. The next season, Wayne State posted its first winning record (8-3), finishing in second place in its only year in the Mid-American Conference. The Tartars were guided through the latter half of the 1940s by standout players such as Ronald Teasley (1945, 1947), who holds the school’s single-season (.500) and career (.415) batting average records; John Wingo (1949-51), who totaled 87 strikeouts in three years and is the current school record-holder for fewest hits allowed per nine innings (5.74); and George Shuk (1946-49), who batted .375 over his four-year career including a .462 mark in 1947. Wayne State struggled through most of the following decade, but in 1959, one year after the team won a then-school record 12 games, WSU posted a perfect 6-0 record in the Presidents Athletic Conference, winning the league title in Wayne State’s first season in the PAC and Truske’s final season at the helm. Leon Lande took over in 1960 and won 76 games over nine seasons. His teams featured some of the best pitchers in program history, including Bruce Finlayson (1966-69) and Hall of Famers Bob Kloss (1967-70) and Gordon Reck (1968-71). The trio possesses three of the top four career earned-run averages ever recorded at Wayne State, the lowest belonging to Kloss (2.27). Reck, a lefty who walked on to the team in the late 1960s, set or tied 12 Wayne State pitching records during his career. He remains WSU’s all-time leader in career strikeouts per nine innings (11.22), while his records for innings pitched (224.2) and strikeouts (280) remained intact for over two decades. In 1971, Reck went 9-2 with a 1.52 ERA, and threw a no-hitter in a 2-1 victory over Buffalo as well as a one-hitter in a 1-0 win over Central Michigan. Reck’s career ended midway through the tenure of head coach Bob Samaras, who led the Tartars to 82 wins over five seasons. His .654 winning percentage (17-9) in 1969 was the third-highest in school history. Christ Petrouleas took over in 1974, and during his six-year tenure several All-Americans emerged, the first of which was Paul Janas, another Hall of Famer who garnered All-America status in 1974 – the first baseball player to do so since Collins – after batting .397 with a .504 slugging percentage and setting or matching five WSU single-season records. He also received Academic All-America honors in both 1974 and 1975, the first Wayne State student-athlete in any sport to do so. Greg Brecht, another WSU Hall of Fame inductee, became an All-American in 1975 after hitting .342 with four home runs and 22 RBI. He hit seven homers in 1976, Wayne State’s first season in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, while driving in 32 runs and walking 33 times on his way to being named to the first All-GLIAC team. Three key components to the teams of the late 1970s were all inducted into the WSU Hall of Fame together in 1994. Dave Zelmanski (1975-78) hit .352 for his career and led the nation with nine triples in 1978, setting a school record. Kevin Ponticelli (1976-79) led the 1978 Tartars with a .411 batting average and a then-school record 34 RBI. Angelo Gust, who would take over as head coach in 1980, had been an assistant under Petrouleas since 1974. The 1978 team went 27-16 (.628) and set school records in batting average (.343) and triples (31) which still stand today. It wasn’t until the 1980s, however, that Wayne State would reach championship status. Gust led the Tartars to three straight 20-win seasons, including the 29-16 year of 1982. Wayne State won GLIAC Championships all three years, and Gust was named the conference Coach of the Year each season. As a head coach Gust compiled a 174-151-2 overall record in nine seasons, the second highest winning percentage (.535) among the nine men who have directed the program. The Tartars had only two losing seasons under Gust, and four times cracked the 20-victory barrier. During Gust’s tenure eight of his nine teams had winning records in GLIAC play. Two-time All-GLIAC First Team selection Mark Limback (1979-82) was also named the league’s Player of the Year in 1982 after batting .405 with 11 home runs, a .741 slugging percentage and a school-record 56 runs batted in. Fellow Hall of Famer David Croskey (1979-82) supplemented his career .304 batting average with outstanding baserunning ability, swiping 112 bases including a single-season record 43 in 1982. The Tartars went 27-21 in 1987, but it would be the last time WSU finished with a winning record for 10 years. Rodger George’s 14-year career as head coach began in 1989. He won 272 games in his tenure, was named GLIAC Coach of the Year in 1998 after leading the Tartars to their fourth GLIAC title, and won a then school-record 32 games the following season in 1999. Several standout players left their mark on the program under George’s watch, including Hall of Fame catcher John Miele (1996-99), a two-time First Team All-GLIAC selection. He hit .424 in 1999, fifth-best in school history, with 54 RBI and a WSU- record 21 doubles on his way to being named the conference Player of the Year. Sadly, George passed away in October 2002 after a 10-month battle against brain cancer. Jay Alexander, a former Tartar and George’s assistant coach since 1998, was named the program’s eighth head coach in December. Alexander led WSU to its first NCAA Regional appearances in 2005 and 2008, winning 32 and 34 games in those seasons, respectively. The Warriors also achieved their first national ranking in program history in 2005. Frank Jeney (2002-05) was the 2005 GLIAC Player of the Year, and Kyle Hill (2004-07) matched Hall of Famer Michael Newsted’s (1999-2001) career record of 24 victories. Former Wayne State University standout, Brad Guenther, has signed a contract with the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim organization. He will report to the team’s rookie league team, the AZL Angels in Tempe, Ariz.

The senior catcher was the 2013 GLIAC Player of the Year. He was the fourth Wayne State baseball student-athlete to receive the Player of the Year award and first since Frank Jeney in 2005.

Guenther was also a Tino Martinez Award semifinalist, which is presented to the most outstanding player in DII college baseball. The annual honor is named after the former University of Tampa Spartan, United States Olympian, first round draft pick and MLB All-Star, Tino Martinez.

Former WSU right-hander Anthony Bass, a non-roster invitee to the 2011 San Diego Padres spring training camp, made his major league debut June 13, 2011, at Coors Field in Colorado. He picked up the win after five strong innings, allowing just one run on five hits as the Padres defeated the Rockies, 3-1.

In 2012 Bass started 15 games for the Padres while battling injuries throughout the course of the year. He won two games but logged nearly 100 innings and will compete for a spot in the San Diego rotation in 2013. Prior to the 2014 season, Bass was traded to the Houston Astros.

A fixture on the WSU pitching staff from 2006-08, Bass was an All-American in 2008 and the GLIAC Pitcher of the Year.

Selected by the Padres in the fifth round (165th overall) in 2008, Bass was the first Warrior drafted since Steve Squires in 2005, and the highest-drafted player in program history.
