MARCH 2018 VETERANS HELPING VETERANS ISSUE 26
COMMANDER’S CORNER
Hope everyone is looking forward to spring, I know I am. After our quiet months of January and February things should start picking up. There are many events coming up in the next couple of months. Our annual Scholarship Golf Tournament is coming up April 28
th. Get your team
together and register. We need volunteers to assist in going out and getting raffle items, door prizes, etc for the tournament. We also need hole sponsors which can be individuals or businesses. Hole sponsorships are $100 (or more) a hole and that’s where we get must of our profit for the scholarships. Applications for our in-house scholarship are available at the post. Along with our weekend entertainment schedule and dinners there’s always plenty to do at the Post. So be sure and check the calendar for all the upcoming events. As a reminder the June Convention will be at the Rosen Centre June 8
th to
the 10th. This is where we elect our Department Officers for the coming year. Each Post has one (1) voting delegate authorized for each twenty-five members. Usually our membership numbers allow us to have around 25 voting delegates at the convention. The convention is an excellent opportunity for all members to see how AMVETS operates at the state level. Anyone interested in attending as a delegate please contact me before May 1
st.
As the 5th
largest Post in the state of Florida I would like us to be well represented. As a reminder the Post pays for 2 nights for all officers of the Post and we usually will pay for delegate’s rooms also providing the Post has available monies. Also, the AMVETS National Convention will be held in Orlando from 8-10 August. Don’t forget that the first round of nominations for Post Officers/Trustees will be at the March 20
th General Membership Meeting. At
the February general membership meeting a motion was made to vote on the post going non-smoking. This motion will be voted on at the March 20
th meeting. The May
annual meeting for Post 35 will be 8 May instead of the normal third Tuesday. This is to comply with Department Constitution and By-Laws. In closing I would like to thank all the members and officers of this post for their support. Our Post can only be as good as we all are, working together to further the Aims and Ideals of AMVETS.
Yours in Service Craig Sarrasin Commander
FROM THE AUXILIARY
Thank you all for coming out to the Valentine’s Dinner and Party! Everyone had a great time and full bellies. The Italian dinner was a big hit. Thanks to your generosity, we raised $903.67 for the American Heart Association! With March comes the luck of the Irish. Auxiliary is teaming up with the Post and the Sons to make St. Patrick’s Day a big event at Post 35. In addition to the corned beef and cabbage dinner offered by the post, Auxiliary will be hosting horse races to benefit scholarship. Contact Beth Mills to help out as there are many moving parts to make a successful horse race. And plan to be there March 17 – horse races are a ton of fun, plus we will be drawing our gun raffle winner of the Kimber Micro 9! ATTENTION AUXILIARY MEMBERS: Elections will be held at the May meeting. If you’ve never been through this process, I encourage you to participate. To be eligible to vote for your Auxiliary board, you must be present to vote at the May 1 meeting. Additionally, you must have attended 3 Auxiliary meetings throughout our fiscal year. We meet the first Tuesday of every month at 6:30pm in the Post meeting shed. You can attend the March 6, April 3, and May 1 meetings to be eligible to vote if you haven’t attended any meetings since June 2017. First round of nominations will be conducted at the April 3 meeting – anyone can nominate! Our officer positions are:
1. President 2. First Vice President (membership) 3. Second Vice President (Child Welfare) 4. Third Vice President (Community Service 5. Secretary 6. Treasurer 7. Chaplain 8. SEC Representative 9. Parliamentarian 10. Americanism Officer 11. Scholarship Officer 12. Hospital Officer 13. Sargent at Arms
As you can see, it takes many to spread the workload and have a properly functioning Auxiliary that does the most good for our Post, our causes, and our community.

AMVETS PROGRAMS
Our Programs reports are off and running at a snail’s pace so far this year, so I need your help. Please remember to input the things that you are doing or to jot it down on a report for me. You can even e-mail it, as my address is at the bottom of my report each month. Almost anything that you do for someone without receiving any pay can be considered a program. This is also one time that you are allowed to be a tattle-tale! If someone does something to help you, that needs to be reported as well. Nothing would make me happier than for each and every one of our members to turn in a report, however small, each and every month. Remember, small things add up to big things! It’s not too early to start thinking about the upcoming elections. If there is an office you have been considering, I’m sure the person who fills that spot currently would be more than happy to provide information and training to see if it’s something you want to do. New faces bring new ideas, and though most of us are willing to continue, we’re getting tired!
Also, one thing we often do is to forget those who are contributing to our Post. I’d like to recognize the Trustees for all they do around the Post. Just regular maintenance is quite a daunting task! A special thanks to Earl, as I understand that he’s responsible for the light in the ladies room. Awesome! I’d also like to thank Sherrie and her staff for doing such a good job. Many things would not happen at the Post without Sherrie planning and in some cases preparing food, decorating, etc., for the event at hand. We also have a great group of ladies behind the bar that babysit us on a regular basis in case you haven’t noticed. A big Thank You to the Ladies for putting on such a great meal and party for Valentine’s Day! What a wonderful change from the regular steak dinner. And they were able to raise a large donation for the Heart Association as well. Good job! And finally, kudos to Lori and Cory Clark for ramrodding the Sunday Fun Day. If you’ve missed the last two Fun Days you’ve really missed a good time! That goes to show you that you don’t have to hold a Post office to make a change for the positive. Just bring a good idea – no, a GREAT idea – and let’s roll with it! Keep the reports coming, we need them!!
Yours in Service, Liz Westby [email protected]
