From the desk of Principal Beth Hill

April, 2012 Dear Friend of Newark Catholic High School, Spring is in the air after a very mild winter and with that comes all of the “rights of passage” for our stu-dents at NC. Our annual Senior Class Trip to Washington, D.C. took place in late March and continually amazes and inspires me. While at our Nation’s Capitol we are frequently commended for the maturity and politeness of our seniors. One of my favorite moments is the wreath laying ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery where we are honored to have our Class President and Student Council President represent us. There is no greater moment for me than to watch two of our students place the wreath by the tomb and then hear Taps as I look across to the city and think how blessed we are to be in the United States of America. And then I look around and see the same response in the faces of our students and thank the Lord for the gift of each of them. (And for those of you who may be wondering, yes, Mr. Schaefer still coordinates the trip and keeps us all on our best behavior as we tour the big city. We are grateful to him for his hard work and continued dedication to plan and execute this annual event!)

My thanks to all of you who continue to support Newark Catholic through your prayers, financial assis-tance, and good works. We are blessed with a wonderful community that truly embraces Catholic education. I would also like to take this time to thank our faculty and staff who are so devoted and loyal to our school.

It is an exciting time for us as we move closer to the construction phase of our Building Our Future Cam-

paign. If you have not already done so, please consider a contribution to this very worthwhile project. Please keep NCHS in your prayers, as you will remain in ours. May Our Lady continue to bless us. Sincerely, Beth Hill Principal

Mr. Moore, “You Make a Difference!”

Congratulations to Newark Catholic teacher Mr. Dennis Moore for being one of 13 teachers honored for their dedication to their students Wednesday March 7 at the 13th annual You Made a Difference awards ceremony at the Career and Technol-ogy Education Center of Licking County. Sponsored by Coughlin Automotive Group, the event included each honored teacher taking the stage while the students read their nomination letters. The teachers received a golden apple trophy and $500. Mr. Moore was nominated by NC senior Ian Buchanan for this honor. Thank you Mr. Moore for making a difference for our students! Mr. Moore teaches music

and drama at NC.

Les Mis...Magnificent!

The Drama Club’s production of Les Mis in January, still has people talking! With twenty-five percent of the NC student body participating in this years’ drama production, it turned out to be one of the best ever! Under the direction of Mr. Moore, the students sang, danced and acted as if they had been plucked from a Broadway stage. Amazing! Incredible! Outstanding! We can’t wait to see what next year brings! ENCORE! ENCORE!

Thirty-five juniors and seniors attended the first NC KAIROS retreat at the Sts. Peter & Paul Retreat Center (formerly PIME). The retreat started Friday evening and lasted until Monday afternoon. Pic-tured left is the student and adult retreat team that led the weekend’s activities and schedule of events. Obviously, part of KAIROS is getting your picture taken out-side holding a sign! :) Below is a group of students who attended the weekend. (Of course they’re holding a sign)

On a Mission For GOD Father Joshua Wagner is not your ordinary priest. Fr. Wagner has a gift, a special gift, to get his audiences to laugh, to think, to act on their relationship with God and with each other. Fr. Wagner spent three mornings presenting his mission to the students and fac-ulty at Newark Catholic. He is a great storyteller and a great way to start your day! Father Wagner told us that no matter what we do in our lives, God will always forgive us! He told us to always treat others with respect. We never know what others are going through and what they have to deal with in their daily lives. We thank Fr. Wagner for taking time out of his busy schedule to share his gifts with the students and faculty at NC. We are all better people because of Fr. Wagner and his gifts.

Stay True to the Gospel...

Above is Fr. Ferguson, of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel, celebrating our Ash Wednesday Mass. The mosaic on the front of the alter was made by art students and will hang in the newly remodeled chapel. Below are some of the art students who made Stations of the Cross. Below right is the Reconciliation assembly that helped ready our hearts for a good confession. Thank you Mrs. Boehmer and your art students for making this Lenten season so beautiful! We would also like to thank Bob Morain and everyone who was involved in making our Lenten services awesome.

Boys Basketball

The 2011-12 Boys Basketball team, under first year coach Eric Sheck, won the school’s third District Championship in the last four years before falling to Africentric in the Regional semi-final. The Green Wave also won the MSL-Ohio title and finished the season with a 21-4 record. The Wave were ranked as high as 3rd in the State Polls. The Green Wave, losing only one senior, Jack Durham, will be working hard toward adding Regional and State titles to their resume next year. Congratulations Coach Sheck on a great first season at NC!

Girls Basketball

First year head coach, Rob Smith, led the Lady Green Wave to a 22-2 record, winning the MSL-Ohio and District championship before falling to Shekinah Christian in the regional semi-final. Coach Smith stressed defense this year and the girls responded by holding every team under 50 points this season. The girls finished the regular sea-son ranked 3rd in the State Polls. The Lady Wave say goodbye to seven seniors: Lauren Blair, Tia Brown, Erin Sims, Haley Wagner, McKenzie Clark, Colleen Gilmore, and Meghan Ceneviva. Coach Smith will have his work cut out for him next year replac-ing the senior leadership. However, Coach Smith has a strong group of underclassmen ready to step up!

Wrestling The NC Wrestling Team started the year with 12 wrestlers out of 14 weight classes. They ended the year with 9 wrestlers due to injuries. All 9 wrestlers placed at the Sectional Tournament giving the Green Wave its first Sec-tional Championship ever! Seven of the nine placers from Section-als went on to District where five of them placed sending 4 wrestlers to the coveted State Tournament. It was the second time that NC has sent four wres-tlers to the State Tournament. Coach Boucher is excited about next year, 3 of the 4 State quali-fiers and 5 of the 7 District qualifiers return.

Pictures of the Green Wave wrestlers at State. Top Left and clockwise: Connor Shook 195# (Sr.), Caleb Ohl 106# (So.), Evan Hansel 138# (So.) and DJ De-vito 113# (Jr.). Shook and Hansel each went 1-2, while Ohl and Devito both went 0-2 at the State Tournament.

Swimming The Green Wave Swim Team was small and young this year, not a great combination for winning meets. But the Green Wave competed in every race they were in. “We had a lot of new swimmers this season, so we are building for the future. I was very proud of the way they swam and continued to work hard all season,” said coach Brune. Pictured front row: Mary Richard-son, Julia Roche, Taylor Meek, Casey Brown, Fiona Van Horne. 2nd row: Mariah Licata, Amanda Cirillo, McKee Reid, Rose Amore. Back row: Asst. Coach McKenzie Brune, Caleb Burd, Devin Lee, Andy Gehart and Head Coach Donell Gastinau.

From the Advancement Office Greetings! What an unbelievable winter it has been. All of our athletic teams had great success and Mother Nature has sure been kind to us these past few months. All in all, it’s been a great time to be a Green Wave! The last two years, you have heard and seen a lot about our capital campaign. Rumors of it’s demise are untrue, granted it has been a long, slow process. When we had our Ground Breaking Ceremony, things looked very promising. When the bids for building came in, they were a little higher than expected, so the diocese asked us to raise more money to cover the extra expenses. That is where we stand today. We still need to raise $333,860 overall and $70,700 is needed to get started on demolition and construction. As soon as the $70,700 is raised, we can finally begin. There is a light at the end of the tunnel after all! The names listed below and on the next page are those who have supported the campaign by making pledges and gifts toward the Building Our Future Capital Campaign. I thank you for your support in this much needed addition to Newark Catholic High School. I would like to wish everyone a Blessed Easter. Please pray for Newark Catholic as we continue to pray for you!

Peace! Thom McManus PS. Don’t forget to support our Annual Fund Drive! Advancement Director NC Class of 1976

Lynne Nichols (NC ‘ 81) Wins Title!

Nichols recently competed in the Masters Amateur Figure Competition at

The Arnold Classic. Lynne surmised that she was probably the oldest competitor at 49 years young in the 35 and up category. Lynne competed

against women from all over the world. She began training at age 20, but in the mid 1990’s she put her own athletic pursuits on hold while she watched

Troy (NC ’04 ) and Alicia (NC ’07 ) compete. Congratulations Lynne!

Jimmy Lough’s dream came true when he received a call from Ohio State coach Greg Beals asking him if he would like to be a Buckeye. Jimmy will be the 6th NC baseball player to sign and play for Ohio State. Garrett Vernau always wanted to play baseball. He will get his chance to ex-tend his career playing DII baseball for the Tiffin University Dragons.
